im just wondering this, as it would make sense if the areas are as big as bioware say, wouldnt it make sense to have a day/ night cycle if your spending hours in areas at a time? anyone know?

Watching the gameplays, an inquisitor attacked a fort at night.

As I understand it, there will be no dynamic day/night cycles (like in Skyrim for example).

I think it depends on the area you visit, so go to area A and you will have daytime, go to area B and you will have night time. Something like that.

Or maybe there will be a day/night toggle like in DA2.

yeah but i mean does it get dark as you play, or does it just change when you go into a rest period or between travel... just wondering if it was like skyrim or far cry in the regard that the of day changes as you play

I don't know exactly where, but I think it was already said there would be a day/night cycle.

I really hope this is the case, because having to explore each part in DA2 twice each act got very annoying in my opinion.

I think they said somewhere specifically that there would be a day/night cycle but not a dynamic one like Skyrim since there are multiple maps and not one open world. But I could be wrong. I think they might be going back tot he toggle system again before entering an area.

i agree, it was nice to have that option but i want it to be abit more fluid and seamless to the experience, but i guess we will she :)

Not sure where people read there will be a cycle because I am certain they said there would NOT be a day/night cycle. They want a zone to have a set mood/ambience and they felt that locking in a zone to a certain time of day helps with this. Unless they said something different during E3 this Is likely still the way it is.

A fortnight?

On topic: The problem with Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma nights is that they were too dark. It was annoying to wander around in pitch black, especially with enemies around. Now I know it might be more realistic that way, but I myself can discard some realism to make way for ease of playing. Two Worlds for example had a much more comfortable night setting - usually with a moonlight to provide light, but still a very distinct mood.

There is no cycle. I believe that each area has a set time of day to provide the right atmosphere for each location. As far as I can remember, at any rate.

True. I just found the source for it, LadyInsanity who was at a panel of Bioware where this was mentioned (a convention in April):

"Day and Night cycles? No, as it is driven by story. Not on a dynamic system, as a stylistic choice. This way, different environments can have very strong atmosphere and mood in sync with the crafted music and script. On a long term basis, however, it is something the developers may look into."

As long as it won't be like in DA2 :P (except if all the loot would be the same day and night)

That is what drove me crazy about DA2. Not only did we have the same maps in the same city the entire game... but we had to visit them at both Day and Night to find all the encounters/NPC/loot FOR EACH ACT.

This means, for a completionist, you had to run and check every corner of an area, say The Docks, at Day and Night, during Acts 1, 2 and 3. Six times walking the same map, often doing little more than just running it as fast as possible to search for sparkles or mooks to fight.

That's what wore me out. I didn't mind The Cave being the only map to explore in the wild. - I was just driven batty by having to make the same marathon run around Kirkwall (twice!) at the start of each Act.

well the video i saw of the party attacking a group at night, seizing the fort, then returning later during day time... maybe it will be like a rest period type of deal where you rest for a specific time and that reflects the time of day?

Day/Night is driven by story. Some areas will have both a "day" and a "night" but it isn't dynamic in the same way GTA or Elder Scrolls games are.

It's a little disappointing, but I can understand why if they want to nail atmosphere just right for a particular moment. I'd argue that you can have your cake and eat it too though, locking Day/Night to the story-preset until said story element was accomplished, then unlocking it. GTA5 does something similar to this with some of its missions.

Fable 2 did this a lot. When you entered Brightwood for the tower quest the game clock would be set at midnight and it would remain so until you complete the tower at which point it would unlock.

More likely the attack on the fort is scripted to be at night.

There is an option to turn the brightness up in the game so the night time gameplay isn't so dark. I often turned the brightness up in caves etc.

I hate nothing more than day/night cycles. They are one of the worst killers of verisimilitude for me - the entire game world runs on a 30 minute to an hour clock, and that's just bizzare. Although they're not quite as bad an offender as a pure, Skyrim-like open world map.

But what about a day-night-cycle with zombies? Would you hate that more?

And not just once, but multiple times, because you couldn't encounter every single bandit ambush *coughSPAWNcough* within a single run through an area (at least I couldn't). You had to go once, kill all the bandits, then return another time to kill off the last groups and get the quest to kill them off.

Isn't it more realistic than a toggle, though? I agree the thirty minute thing is bad, but a toggle is just absurd.
