For me anyway, having the romance I went with in both games (Leliana and Isabela) being in this and no longer with Warden and Hawk is a bummer. This has been discussed a bit before, but I haven't been on the forum this year yet. A dev mentioned they think it's all "head canon" for us to want romances to last, but since the story indicated that they would last, or that Hawk and Isabela would sail off together on her ship, it feels like it's ignoring it. And feels very contrived.
In general, not having Warden or Hawk would be like if Mass Effect 3 didn't have Shepard. I'm cool with a new protagonist every time, but when you want to bring it all together storywise the biggest problem is choosing not to show Hawk or the Warden. Including their love interests and many other characters only makes it feel weirder, like they've been isolated from their own friends/family, and their story universe in general. For me this is the biggest hurdle for the story, and having Leliana and Isabela in there only makes it easier to mess up.
If Hawk and Warden turn out to be gone for good or destroyed by some ancient evil who'll be the villain in the next one or something, that'd feel like a copout. I get that it could take effort to include a side-character with a customizable appearance, but if you're making the story around that like a crutch because you don't want to deal with including them, that feels artificial.
Short version, I can dig an RPG series that focuses on new characters each time, but when you're bringing back the characters closest to the previous protagonists but not those protagonists themselves, that causes problems. So pretty much, how they handle that is my main concern story wise for this game, as the third part in an ongoing story.
