Leliana and Isabela etc without Warden and Hawk is the biggest problem the story faces

For me anyway, having the romance I went with in both games (Leliana and Isabela) being in this and no longer with Warden and Hawk is a bummer. This has been discussed a bit before, but I haven't been on the forum this year yet. A dev mentioned they think it's all "head canon" for us to want romances to last, but since the story indicated that they would last, or that Hawk and Isabela would sail off together on her ship, it feels like it's ignoring it. And feels very contrived.

In general, not having Warden or Hawk would be like if Mass Effect 3 didn't have Shepard. I'm cool with a new protagonist every time, but when you want to bring it all together storywise the biggest problem is choosing not to show Hawk or the Warden. Including their love interests and many other characters only makes it feel weirder, like they've been isolated from their own friends/family, and their story universe in general. For me this is the biggest hurdle for the story, and having Leliana and Isabela in there only makes it easier to mess up.

If Hawk and Warden turn out to be gone for good or destroyed by some ancient evil who'll be the villain in the next one or something, that'd feel like a copout. I get that it could take effort to include a side-character with a customizable appearance, but if you're making the story around that like a crutch because you don't want to deal with including them, that feels artificial.

Short version, I can dig an RPG series that focuses on new characters each time, but when you're bringing back the characters closest to the previous protagonists but not those protagonists themselves, that causes problems. So pretty much, how they handle that is my main concern story wise for this game, as the third part in an ongoing story.

When this came up last year I think it was implied by somebody that she'd be in it. At least everyone seemed to think she'd be in it. If it turns out she's not in it, there are still the other concerns there.

I don't see "former LIs without their significant others" as a huge story problem. It sounds more like a fan problem. (Majority or minority, I couldn't say.) Leliana being in the Inquisition without her Warden lover isn't going to cause story problems, but it might annoy people who romanced her.

And if the Warden has been captured and Leliana is working to free him/her?

Yeah.  Heck, at least one of the romances in BG2 was essentially saying they'd often be apart a while doing missions, but would catch up when they could.

The romance aspect of the game which I do enjoy is only a minor aspect of the overall story. It's not a deal breaker for me that my past romance Leliana is unavailable to me now. Although I am disappointed I am looking forward to what this new protagonist is all about and the characters around him/her too.

There is much truth in that btw.

There was a letter that should have been in Awakening (but was bugged in earliest version so it did not appear) from Leliana to the Warden if a love interest.   In it she says she has been called away by the Grand Cleric (presumably Dorothea before she became the Divine) and that is why she cannot be there to help at Vigil's Keep.   So if her loyalty to Dorothea was enough to leave the Warden to manage on their own then, it would have been even more important once Dorothea became the Divine and needed her help.   This would explain why she wasn't on hand when the Warden went missing.   Since Leliana herself believes that the disappearance of the Warden and Hawke at around the same time is no coincidence, I have always assumed it will be tied in some way to the events in DAI.

I'm pretty sure that if they allow us to feed in the romance to the Keep, then Leliana will mention it in conversation.   If finding out what has become of the Warden is part of a sub-quest then no doubt there will be additional dialogue if they were in a relationship with her.

As for Isabella, may be Varric will be able to throw some light on that.   After all he was involved in certain events that seem to have taken place between the Annulment of the Circle in Kirkwall and Cassandra interrogating him some 2-3 years later.   Again, if the romance is recorded in the Keep, then additional dialogue will be provided to cover it, even if she doesn't make an appearance in the game.    I'd like to know what became of Fenris, my most frequent love interest, but also the other companions.    I would imagine if anyone knows, it would be Varric.

If that's the biggest problem the Game would have, storywise, then that will be a damn good game.

Anyways, I'm sure that at least the Leliana Romance will be mentioned excessively - heck, even DA2 mentioned it (the faith-Quest of Sebastian in Act 3).

Couldn't care less about isabela though - could never bring myself to romance these "Fanservice"-Characters and found her casual Attitude about Relationships not appealing. I also gave her to the Qunari in my main World State, so that's that.

I have a feeling Hawke and Warden are missing/dead as a result of our Big Bad. I expect/hope that if former love interests who are not otherwise important to the plot (like Leliana, Alistair, and Morrigan) have cameos, it will be due to us running into them because we're both looking for the Warden/Hawke. Unless the Inquisition just gave up on that after the end of DA2.

And I expect the LI who are important to the plot to at least show concern about where Hawke/Warden went, but they have other duties that prevent them from actively searching. Leliana probably expects that her work with Inquistion is the best way to find the Warden. Alistair would either have his Grey Warden or Kingly duties preventing him from searching. Who knows what Morrigan's thoughts are? But she probably has reasons.

They could always go the Jaheira route:

Time spent apart does not necessarily have to be permanent.

I do agree with the OP that they should have left the warden and Hawke have their happy endings (at least in my case: The Warden and Leliana together and Hawke and Isabella)

But as we know they both disappeared so now I'm hoping they will resolve this issue in DA:I because its one thing that (for an example) Leliana and the warden don't spend that much time together (with him doing warden stuff and leliana being the hand of the divine) but its a whole other thing if they both just

disppeared and maybe even dead :(

If that's the biggest problem then Dragon Age: Inquisition is going to be golden.

I don't think it's really going to be a problem for the story.  I think it could be easily addressed.  Whether they will address it in a good way is another question.

Leliana was my Warden's romance but I'm super happy that she's in Inquisition.  She will talk about my Warden and I will grin from ear to ear.  I don't think it's an issue that with all the chaos of the past ten years they haven't been able to stick with each other at all times.  But I'm holding out some hope that somehow, someway the two of them will be reunited.  Who knows.

Well, when the world is being torn apart, certain things become more of a priority than relationships. I was sad that my warden couldn't live happily ever after as Queen with Alistair, but she had important stuff to do and I'm glad she didn't just stay. Same for my Hawke, given her lover was slightly...unstable, I'm sure she had her own things to take care of as well, but in my head they still love them very much. There will probably be mention of a romance if a file with it is imported though.

I share the OP's concern, and I think it's okay to express that concern. The romances mean a lot to some players, and that's no insult to BioWare; it's a compliment to the amazing writers, artists, and other developers who worked so hard to make us fall in love with these characters.

It broke my heart when Zevran was nowhere to be found in Awakening, and it broke it again when Zevran showed up in DA2 without my Warden. Not only that; he didn't even acknowledge the relationship. True, this was a bug, but it was a bug that was never fixed and is rarely acknowledged by the team at all.

If Fenris, my canon LI, makes an appearance in DAI without Hawke, and doesn't mention him, and isn't actively looking for him... sure, I'll be really upset, and it will sour me towards the game a little. However, I don't think the team will make this mistake again. I think they know how much some of us care about these characters and these bonds we've created.

I feel the most anxious for those who romanced Alistair, Morrigan, and especially Leliana. They're all going to be in DAI; here's hoping they mention their beloved and how worried they are for them.

Eh. I have faith that this will be addressed, especially with the Warden and Hawke supposedly AWOL.

Biggest problem the story faces is definitely a stretch.

Yeah, the big thing is that I wouldn't have minded not seeing Hawke and the Warden after DAO and DA2 if Bioware hadn't gone with them disappearing and the Inquisition trying to find them.

They have better things to do?

I mean my protag isn't exactly going everywhere with them either as Awakening shows. Sometimes they have better things to do then spend all their time with their waifu/husbando.

I don't think the Leliana thing will be a huge issue. Leliana is not a romance option. One possible reason for this is that she is still considered to be the LI of your Warden if your Warden was attached to her.

My Wardens didn't romance Leliana ever because I tend to play as a straight female, so I'll be more upset if we're talking about Alistair or Zevran or Fenris that are showing up with new LIs, although I don't necessarily need them showing up with my Hawke's or Wardens.

Once they explain about the Warden falling off that cliff and Hawk getting eaten by that shark... The problem just goes away.

Good thing it wasn't the other way around. The Warden would totally Saxton Hale that shark.
