If we chose a different look for Shepard in the first one, and don't like it any more, can we change it when starting a new Mass Effect 2 game?

You can change it, however there aren't any new options like beards or hair styles. You can just choose from the ones in ME1.

this actually raises a question. if you totally redo you face how do the old companions notice who you are?

if you redo the face, they don't comment on it. because it would be hard to set just how much change in tweaking is necessary for the squad mate to still see that you're shepard. thus it's just easier to have it not mentioned. Not a big deal

haha! If you got all out and change you appearance, head shape, jaw and cheeks, etc, etc, etc you'll be looking quite different from your former self. I was talking about a whole make over before.
