When does the sappy music play after Virmire?

So I just did Virmire and no sappy piano music is playing. I was really nice to Ash, but cut Kaidan off at the knees, then ended up saving Kaidan. In the last play through I was on the romance track with Kaidan, then left him to burn and I got the sappy music. And in my speed runs where I don't talk to the crew at all I don't get the sappy music. So when does it play? Is it related to the romance track? Could it be dependent on Shepard's post-mission dialogue choices? In the current playthrough I was rather rough on Kaidan for questioning my decision. I don't remember how Shepard responded last time.

The bleak music is supposed to play post-Virmire. If you aren't hearing it, I guess it's an audio glitch.

Yeah, I remember it all through the conversation with the crew after the mission. I felt like I either had to turn the music volume down or enable subtitles so i could catch all of what the VS was saying.

I've never had an instance where the music did not play. But I also have never done a playthrough without talking to the crew.

All I know is that the music is definitely not tied to the LI, as it always played for me. Independent of if the LI was left behind or not.

I'm not entirely sure about dialogue choices, but AFAIK the music should start before you have the option to say anything, so it should not depend on that, too.

(I'm also pretty sure that I picked each choice at least once, and still got the music)

So, like Dabrikishaw said, it is likely a glitch.

sappy piano music

Hey, I loved that song, I even played it live in one of my concerts once. How dare you...

It is not a glitch where no music plays. Rather, the SAPPY music plays during the debrief, then after talking to the Council, we reverted to the normal "running around the Normandy like everything is  normal" music.

Added: Whoa! I just reviewed the video (13 minute mark) and it IS tied to dialogue choices. When Shepard told Kaidan to stuff it, we'll get revenge, the music stopped and we reverted to "running around the Normandy like everything is  normal" music.

I've been nice to Ashley and never talked with her, but when I leave her on Virmire, I don't get the music at all. I do for Kaidan whether I talk nice, be hateful or ignore him.

Maybe it is tied to gender: mshep gets music for Ash, not Kaidan, femshep gets music for Kaidan, not Ash.

Its possible. The 3 times I played maleshep in ME1, I never left Ashley on Virmire. The times I left her was playing as femshep.

Nah, its not tied to gender. I got the music (most playthroughs were male-shep) whether I rescued Kaidan or Ashley -> even with the same character.

Interesting

Sounds like something for the "Things you just discovered" thread.

I believe it's because you didn't visit Noveria before going to Virmire. I always do Virmire last and the music fits in to the 'home arrest' theme.

Nah, it's not that. I just finished a playthrough where I completed Virmire before Noveria and got the music.

Well, now I'm stumped. I am currently doing a speed run where I have not talked to the crew at all. This time a Femshep saved Kaidan rather than Ashley and the piano music is playing even after the post-mission debrief. (or at least it would be if I had not turned the music volume down to zero.) This time in the dialogue with the VS I went middle-middle-renegade. The last time I had talked to all the crew, was nice to Ash, not so nice to Kaidan, and choose paragon-renegade-renegade in the post-mission debrief. One other difference is that this time I did Virmire last, while in the previous playthrough I did Virmire third.

So I really don't know why sometimes the music plays and sometimes it doesn't.

I'll repeat what happens to me in my ME1 playthroughs. Whenever I leave Kaidan on Virmire, I always get the music no matter who I talk with after the mission on the ship and the few times I left Ashley on Virmire, no music played no matter what I did leading up to the mission when it came to talking with the squadmates. I'm playing on the ps3, so that might have something to do with it. I don't know.

I don't think that the mission order has anything to do with it ( though I did Virmire only once as not-last).

Maybe the dialogue check sums up the responses, and only a majority of renegade answers leads to the music not playing anymore.

On your last video the music stopped playing directly after the second renegade response, after all.

I decided to check on the idea of summing up the responses, but that wasn't it. This time femshep saved Ash, didn't speak to anyone except Liara, went renegade-renegade-paragon, and the music is still playing.

It may be related to when the track is supposed to repeat. If the track is about to repeat and you trigger some action right at that moment the track skips over to the regular Normandy music.
