Ideal companions:
Legacy: Varric, Anders, Sibling
MotA: Aveline and Isabela
I say 'ideal' in terms of 'these people have lots of extra content in their respective DLCs'.
However, I've found that MotA has some rather difficult fights and Isabela is generally your weakest companion, so sometimes I swap her out for a better fighter. Both DLCs do also have a little extra content for your love interests too (but not much, really).
