Should the Mass Effect series cover other genres?

Do you think they should make other types of games set in the Mass Effect univerese? FPS? RTS? Strategy with RPG elements? What do you think of an Mass Effect game where you get to become an commander of a space ship and you have the option of exploring the interior of your ship and interacting with your crewmembers? And also in this space ship combat game you get to land on other planets and explore. How about an Citadel DLC inspired segment that involes you and your crew taking down a rogue Spectre or crime lord on Illium and having a fun party afterwards or was the Citadel a bad DLC?

I always dreamt of something similar to Jagged Alliance or XCOM. Instead of managing from a base or island, you manage out from a ship that you can customize, etc.

No.

While an RTS would be cool, I'd hate to see the series shift from its roots and branch out into other genres. The risk then would be that they'd never make another single player RPG.

When was the last Warcraft RTS for example?

EA could always have another studio to develop those games. Didn't Microsoft had Ensemble Studios develop the Halo RTS?

I think Bioware should always handle the core series (and only the core series). However, I would personally love an RTS based in the MEU (like AoE/Civ with a bit of Halo Wars). Maybe a top down shooter arcade type game (like Spartan Assault). I would really prefer it if the franchise stays away from the generic first person shooter cluster****.

The only way I'd like a Mass Effect game from the first person perspective is if it was an immersive rpg based solely on the Citadel (presidium and wards). Something akin to Elder Scrolls. Hmmm "Sci-Fi-Rim"!

I thought that went without saying but this is what I meant.

I'd love a Mass Effect RTS that covers all the major conflicts of the council era like the Rachni Wars, Krogan rebellions, etc. I'd be mostly spaced focused with different classes of ships you can individually control. I can dream I guess. :)

I'm not opposed to the idea of there being other types of games in the brand.  But it needs to be consistent in tone with the core game (ME:Next).  For instance, the reaper war is over. Do not give me an RTS Reaper War iOS game.  While the idea is cool, it is out of step with where the brand is going.

Now, in the spirit of Infiltrator, I could see something like this:  The next core game is very exploration heavy.  You have to scavange or save up creds to get gear, upgrades, vehicles, etc. that allow you to explore other planets (e.g. suits that can withstand intense radiation). I can see a mobile tie-in point & click adventure/puzzle game that helps you unlock facts about planets so that you know the proper gear, etc. to purchase or gives you resources.

Independent of a mobile tie-in, a Telltale-esque episodic adventure that explores some story arc that was tangent to the core game could work.  I could definitely see something cool where choices you make in the "Telltale" style game alters the world in the core game

I turn to Bioware for my RPG wish fulfillment. I want their storytelling expertise and full concentration on pushing the genre forward.

Unless you're talking something in the casual game arena... with all the micro transactions and ads which would instantly be hated by most players. Including me.

This, very much.

I don't want BioWare to dick about with these different genres for Mass Effect, but I also don't want them doing that for any of their IP ever, for the exact reason you point out.

I wouldn't mind some kind of mobile strategy game made by another studio, but a full-on console game from BioWare direct? Never.

You can change the feel of any universe simply by changing who the central charcter is, there is little need to change the 'genre' of the franchise. I would love to see some sort a "Mass Effect Noir". Think of it like Mass Effect meets The Maltese Falcon with a Blade Runner-type gritty high-tech low-life feel that would expand on Omega and Ilium, focus on the ugly underworld of kingpins like Aria, the power struggles of the merc gangs. Down and out ex C-sec is hired by femme fatale Asari or Turian (or a handsome stranger for her?) to look into the disapearence of a relative, relative is found arguing with bloodpack mercs and dies before your eyes. The investigation into his death takes you from the Citadel to Omega, to Illium and involves red sand trade. You get the idea :)

I'm not big on it.

At least not drastic genre changes. A MMOish type game at some point? Eh sure, some day. A more Stealth type game at some point? Eh sure, at some point.

RTS? Unless it absolutely rocks, no.

FPS? Personally really really prefer 3rd person for this... but we'll see what happens in gaming over the next several years..

I'd like something more like Far Cry 3 or Borderlands 2.  Big, non-linear, RPG elements.

Yeah, something like that would be great. Or something like Dishonored with a lot of freedom.

Something Star Wars: Empire at War-esque would be awesome. I'd love to see ME branching out into other genres as long as it's not an MMO game.
