Writing this hurts. I'm a fan of Felicia Day, and a huge fan of the Dragon Age games as well as Bioware in general. All three have pretty great story development programs in anything they do.
Here's where my concern is, and I'll keep it brief.
Key-Points:
1. Tallis is a Ben-Hassrath, or in lamens terms, a priest who enforces the religion of the Qun; even in combat.
2. Tallis's entire story is based upon this one piece of background. Her character, her personality, etc. are all based on being a Ben-Hassrath and attempting to redeem herself in the Qun.
Plot Hole (gaping, really):
1. Sten in Dragon Age Origins straight up tells a female Warden that "Women are priests, artisans, shopkeepsers, or farmers. They don't fight."
That line, heck that whole conversation upon going back to camp and having Sten say he can't figure her out, she's a woman, etc. defies women being combative priests within the Qun.
I've never run a playthrough on a female Warden until now, so it was new for me, but I don't quite understand how such a glaring omission would occur in a Bioware storyline. I love Felicia Day, but her entire Tallis character, starting with Dragon Age Redemption and moving into Mark of the Assassin is based on a Mary Sue form of literature.
"Mary Sue" today has changed from its original meaning and now carries a generalized, although not universal, connotation of wish-fulfillment and is commonly associated with self-insertion. True self-insertion is a literal and generally undisguised representation of the author; most characters described as "Mary Sues" are not, though they are often called "proxies" for the author. The negative connotation comes from this "wish-fulfillment" implication: the "Mary Sue" is judged as a poorly developed character, too perfect and lacking in realism to be interesting."
Basically, Felicia Day made Tallis, who is a piece of herself. No big issue; they were cameoing her into the game. The issue though is her entire backstory. Instead of going with any culture which would have allowed it, she's a perfectly athletic assassin, priest, thief, etc. who is able to be romantically involved with the main character without negatively affecting the story and who's entire background is derived on a thoughtless addition into the Qunari. It somewhat sucks that no one caught this before an entire DLC was created around it.
