Pretentious? It's the Hammer Horror monster movie setting, crossed with the Gothic novel genre. I'm pretty sure it's not taking itself too seriously. I like it, myself.
If you were to make a Persistent World/module: What would you base it on?

Gothic novel usually takes itself pretty seriously.

Do modern readers? I certainly couldn't take the Castle of Otranto seriously, even though it was the quintessential Gothic novel. I get a distinctly self-aware, tongue in cheek feel from the Ravenloft sourcebooks, with their thinly-veiled Van Helsing and Count Dracula.

I have never played Ravenloft, only read the books.

The setting isn't. But some of the original writers weren't as clever as they thought they were. Doesn't matter, I just just didn't like it and wouldn't play a PW based on it. Good luck to those who do.

Hm, I understand you don't want to get into it here, since it's a bit off topic for this thread, but perhaps in another thread you can explain which of these authors perceived themselves to be at a certain level of cleverness, when they were actually at a lower one, and which details led you to that conclusion. I'm very curious, given how adamant you are on that point.
