Yeah, I thought that might be one of his reasons. Even if the advisors get less screen time, their romances won't be any less valid. Traynor and Cortez weren't any less valid than Liara or Kaidan.

Tryanor and Cortez did have less content, though.  But this won't be the case with the non-companion romances in DAI.  So I don't see why people are treating them like they don't count as "real" romances.

Scribbles probaply is as much romance option as Cass so I wouldn't count her out. Straight female character has only 2 confirmed as well, one NPC and one bi (who seems to be Iron Bull). So same situation really.

ill post what i posted before about advisers romance content:

"i dont think its a matter of content, but that you cant take advisers with you WHENEVER you want WHEREVER you want. they cant fight besides you throughout the whole game.

anyway this is not the point of the topic. we are comparing companions romance options with companions romance options, not advisers PLUS companions with companions. till now we always had choices in the "companion department" (like more than one companion) now we have no choice because there is only cassandra."

I know. My point was that even though they had less content, they weren't any less valid than Liara or Kaidan or Garrus or any of the others.

Yep, writing the characters with definite orientations means that while their are a lot of available people in the game, not all of them may swing your way, but what it does mean is that those characters have a better chance of being fully fleshed out characters in their own right rather than the shallow "ambi"sexuals we got in DA2. Most of those romances weren't even bi ... they were waiting for the PC to turn a switch telling them what they were, and it constricted the writing that could be done for them. The writers had to write vanilla characters that could be interpreted as more or less swinging either way unless you were talking about someone like Isabela who was openly bi and made no bones about it. She was a real character.

This way, yeah, there are going to be people who aren't going to be happy with the choice for their personal orientation, but the character will be better developed. I may end up not liking Cullen, and I'm not sure that I'll get into Qunari (assuming that the Iron Bull thing is true). So, I either play a male PC ... or I just go through the game as a friend. It happens. I had a Shepard who wound up that way.

So will this be the DA game with the least amount of romance options instead of the one with the biggest???

lets clarify...

if you want to play as a MALE character and you WANT to romance a female COMPANION you will have no choices because there will be only one... cassandra.

This is a pretty skewed comparison, as you are intentionally ignoring an entire group of characters which can also be romanced. And which happen to include one more female option for the male characters.

If you did similarly skewed comparison in the opposite way, then in DA and DA2 the number of romances with female ADVISORS would be ZERO, because there's no advisors in these games, whatsoever. And that would make DAI the game with most romance options by long shot.

Oh totally, I'm just saying, I see why people are concerned about non-party LIs, because of the precedent that Traynor and Cortez set.  But everything we know so far tells us that we don't need to worry about that.

But the point of the topic is romance options.  Non-companion romances are an option, even if it's not an option that you like.

It's also been implied that party banter does not happen outside of "safe" areas, so even if you could take your LI with you, you won't get much more interaction with them than if they only live at the keep.

Ah, okay. Gotcha. I'm personally really excited to see how they'll be implemented. Greg Ellis' twitter made Cullen's romance sound very... exciting.

Also, straight guys MIGHT only get one companion and one NPC romance this game. And that would be fine. They never promised multiple companion romances to anyone.

Frankly, with learning that advisors have a different approval mechanism, I'd prefer advisor romances just to see how this new mechanism works.

and dont think "fine" is the word it should be used. but that is what it is.

doesnt chance the fact the this game will have the least amount of options of romanceable companions from every DA game released and probably from every bioware game ever released.

just dont get me wrong the game still looks awesome and improved from every DA game before.

but i still would like to use this space to share my disappointment about this "aspect" of the game in the hope that it will be better next time, like a return to actually having options again.

Just as a question, are you expecting less than 2 romanceable characters?  Because that's what DAO and DA2 gave you (in DAO's case, sometimes only 1).

I disagree with the mandate that it's less of an option because of some qualification of companion characters, and will happily state that Scribbles' romance is pretty damned cool.

I wasn't aware they had confirmed Scribbles romance.

The Devs are out in force with the teasing today. Sheryl Chee popped into the Leliana thread to whip up a little frenzy.

Most. Nobody has to play as a particular race/gender/sexuality type every single time. It will hopefully encourage multiple playthroughs and experimentation to try new things. You can only romance one character per playthrough anyway.

well the simply fact that you cared to answer to this topic gave me the answer that i wanted about companions that are romenceable... so thanks.

and about what you said lets see.

if you play the game as a male PC and you WANT to romance a female COMPANION:

DAO - you had 2 choices of companions to romance

DA2 - you again had 2 choices

DAI - no choice because there is only cassandra

so is it wrong of me to say that indeed we do have LESS COMPANIONS choices now???

again please excuse me if this distresses you. its not my intention to start here one of those very "hot" topics that end up in a war of words.

i only wanted to post that we do have less choices now than we had before in the "companion department" hoping that in the future bioware considers going back to the 2 companions choices of romance. thanks for reading!

Yes, you have less choice right now, but we don't know every single companion romance yet.

And if you want to romance a companion only and you get only once choice, you are limiting your own choice if you only want to romance a companion. People have already told you that even if you bring a companion with you, you aren't going to be able to continue your romance on the road anyway.

What really gets to me is that this particular topic is always posted from the viewpoint of the straight male gamer. It is shame that my gender can be that focused on getting enough options, more so than other groups of people. And seriously, right now the straight female gamer has NO companion they can romance. And yet stating that is also premature because we simply don't know all romances as of yet.

I think that it's unnecessarily scrutinizing.  If you wish to feel that this game will be subpar because of this, then the silver lining is that you now know and can make an informed decision.

You're the one distressed and you're acting unreasonable now.  You're now explaining obvious things to people that already know the thing you're saying.

Thread closed.  Frustration noted.
