First and foremost thank you so much Bioware for the ridiculous information dump today. It was truly welcome. I've already pre-ordered two copies of the game. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Anyway after today I had one major concern: the level cap. So it was confirmed today that there will be a level cap of 25-30. I for one hate it when I've hit the level cap and I've still got 20 hours more gameplay left. One of the things I really loved about Skyrim is that you basically have to finish the entire game(and all DLC) to hit the cap and it's 81. DAI has the same level cap of the first two games but it's twice as big. I see a lot of exploration with no leveling in my future. When that happens I feel stonewalled and it lowers my enjoyment level of the game. Anybody else feel the same way?
Anybody else concerned about the level cap?

Yes , 25/30 for a open world is just strange.
Probably going to change with the DLC.

You feel like being able to level up distracts you from exploring?

I thought it was. I haven't played a ton of open world games but still...

They said that leveling would be quick in the beginning but will become a slow drag towards the last levels. I think we'll be fine.
Doesn't really make me feel better. They've said it will be a 100 hour game. If i gain 10 levels in the first 5 hours and then gain 20 levels for the remaining 95 I'm probably not going to be a happy camper.

I think it depends on how they have the leveling; I thought they said it would be a mix of DAO and DA2. I could be mis-remembering though. There is only going to be one specialization available too, which is fine with me because I always felt OP by the end of the game anyway.

It's all about balance. In older D&D editions you were basically a God when you hit the last level or two, which was just 20, but it was damn hard to get there.
There's a multitude of ways they can handle level caps as well. Balance the game so that to reach the cap you have to do everything there is so when you reach the end game you either are just shy or only just arrived at the level cap. Or balance it out with things like armor and accessories boosting stats, so even if you do reach the level cap with say 10 hours left in the game, there is still a great deal of high level equipment and weapons that will greatly augment your characters abilities. So a level 25 character with +1 armor and weapons is nothing compared to a level 25 character with +8 weapons and armor.

Calm down, it's not like the level cap is 5 or something.

Based on the ME series, No; enjoy playing high lvl characters with top gear. That said, there are games that can stagnate when they hit the cap. But DAI and the previous games in this series do not seem to be in that collection.
Neither game had a real level cap. In DA you couldn't reach it without a console cheat. I think it was 30. In DA2 it was 50 and again there was no way to reach it without hacking the game. So in neither game did you ever find a situation where you were exploring but unable to level. Also both of those games were half the size of DAI.

I agree with all of that. But again I keep coming back to Skyrim since that's what they mention for comparison. In that game you essentially never stop leveling and crafting is still a very big deal. The whole point is to create a level 80 character with +8 armor/weapons. I don't understand the reasoning behind giving you 100 hours of content but stonewalling your ability to level.
Calm down, it's not like the level cap is 5 or something.
Why do you say calm down? It's not like I'm threatening to not buy the game. I'm going to get it and play it no matter what. I'm just voicing an opinion.

I'm not bothered by it, but I get why others might be.
Open world or not, there is only so much content that will generate XP for level progression. If there is a semi-significant amount of mutually exclusive content, then the chances of hitting the level cap 'early' go down.
The amount of time they've guessed for an average players average playthrough is in line with my first playthrough of Origins, and I only made it to level 24 just before running out to meet the Archdemon, so I'm not too concerned about it.
Fast at first and then slow seems like a good plan for handling this sort of thing. Time will tell, I'm sure.

Is it a hard cap or a soft cap? The latter is not an issue at all, and the former is only an issue if there is far more experience to be gained then would take to hit the cap. I wouldn't worry about it yet, just having a contextless number tells us nothing.

But maybe tue pace will be different to accommodate for it, we really don't know anything for sure.

I was kinda bothered by it when I saw it. Like, 30 was the level cap in Awakening, and I had already reached that a good deal before the end because I tend to do every side quest. And since Inquisition is so much bigger, I just assumed that the level cap would be bigger. Because I can promise I'll get to level 30 before the game is even half over.
But maybe tue pace will be different to accommodate for it, we really don't know anything for sure.
I believe the level cap for Awakening was level 35. Most people started that expansion at level 24-25. So if you were half way through awakening hitting level 30 that would be just about right. ![]()

I don't like level caps either especially in big games. I often feel like leveling is part of the reason to explore more. It feels like I'm changing and becoming this bad mofo as I discover new areas in the world. This game is obviously more focused on story than most other games but I still like the freedom to level as I explore. It's awesome looking at cool vistas but you better have a lot of unique stories when it comes to side content or have a lot of motivational content to keep me exploring. Yes, looking at pretty environments is nice but that's not enough to motivate me into exploring more all the time. I need you to constantly dangle a carrot on a stick for me. How to do that? Well, they have many ways you can do that for a player. Levels is just one.
Judging by what I've read I think the sacrifice of levels will be okay to me because it does sound like exploring has a lot of the dangle a carrot on a stick when it comes to content.

I figure it'll probably be like the previous games where you won't even realize that there is a cap because you only reach it if you do all of the side content.
