It does seem like that he's becoming more and more a Mary Sue as they write about him more....
He was fine as he was in Origins, he didn't need Dragon Blood or the such.
He does not even use it. It's a device to wake dragons.

Aren't the elves naturally more attuned to magic?
No mention of that anywhere. I've checked WoT and the Wiki. Being elf-blooded means only that an elf and a human decided to have a tumble at some point, whether out of love or out of lust.
This is the opposite of my problem.
You just said that the elf blood made Alistair less unique as a character. So which is it?
Aren't the elves naturally more attuned to magic?
That means nothing to an elf that can't use magic and a human that can't use magic. Added the human is a templer and may not be able to have kids.

That and I have found nothing in the EU to suggest that elf-blood children have any sort of special gifts granted to them by having elves in their family tree. Unless I'm wrong and someone has a legitimate source?
The dragon blood and elf heritage are stupid additions to his character that make me feel a lot less sympathy towards Gaider when people say that he writes Mary Sues.
The thing is, Alistair is really incompetent and not that well liked by many of the people around him. His flaws include being a terrible leader and an not being very smart - it's actually WOG that he's one of the dimmest party members in DA:O.
With that in mind, I don't think he can be a Mary Sue. Plus, in DA:O we see him run away from leadership, run away from leadership again, and let his petty feelings get in the way of pragmatism again and again.
The lack of an explanation isn't the problem, the concept of getting out of what makes a Grey Warden a Grey Warden is just plain bad writing.
Not really. It's made clear that magic has an open avenue to do anything in DA, you just need to know how to do it. It already has been pointed out that if a powerful enough mage can control the fade they can control and remake the world. If magic can do that then why can't it undo the taint?

To be fair, he gets past some of those flaws. Also, how precisely is he particularly stupid? I haven't played DAO in a while.

pretty sure you're right

He's more naive than stupid, I'd say.
This is why I don't really like spin off books.
At least this one mystery can be put to rest. Now there's the issue of Morrigan. Either she was kidnapped at a young age or she may very well be a daughter of Maric. Makes sense to me for Flemeth to have his child and raise her as a witch....with her dragon blood and all.
Their is no way she would kindnap a child to raise. She already has a line of mages she controls to make mages like cattle. Why would she go to that risk?

More like WOM(orrigan), amirite?
I'm asking why it's unfortunate.

As King, Alistair is certainly willing to better himself if The Warden hardens his personality (a route I took in my canon run, along with marrying him to Queen Anora and sparing Loghain).

He doesn't do anything really stupid in DA:O, there was just a thread about this on the old, old Bioware forums (way before DA:O was released, even before there was a BSN) where we asked which character was the dumbest. I believe DG made some joke about Alistair being lower on the totem poll even than the Mabari, in connection to some joke that Morrigan would make that with the Mabari we have someone dumber than Alistair. It's all really hazy because it was a long time ago. We asked if that was actually true, and he said yes.
edit: It's why Alistair losses approval whenever you call him an idiot.

Agreed... people who have never met him think he's stupid (ie, Anora, because she assumes Alistair is pretty much just like Cailan, who does seem pretty stupid). And Alistair plays up on other peoples' perception that he is stupid, but he tells you at one point that the one thing he really liked about being trained by the Templars was the schooling. Also, he tells you how to solve the pressure plate puzzle during the Andraste's Ashes quest. And he is a master of witty repartee, which I normally don't associate with someone whose brain is slower than molasses in January.
If you don't take Alistair on that Sacred Ashes quest, does anyone else make the same assumptionle about the puzz? I've always taken him just about everywhere so I'm never certain which lines are entirely exclusive to him.
Ah, I misunderstood.
I'm not a fan of Fiona, so anything that potentially increases her involvement is a negative. Further, I'm not a fan of the companion material changes to the Therin bloodline. My preference was Alistair as presented in DA:O and DA2, without all the tacked on glitz.
Fiona is going to have a heavy part no matter what in the plot with the mage /templer war. And the glitz means nothing. This does not change his character in any way. This just ties the Theirin line closer to the plots of Flemith.

Who would like being called an idiot?

I don't think being elf blooded is a particularly "special" trait in a world where elves are treated like dirt.
Also, it's a special trait that we only know for certain with meta info, long after the game where he was most relevant.

Well said.

Not if she dies in the first five minutes as part of the leadership explosion.
Bingo. I believe both she and Justinia went up in flames.
Not if she dies in the first five minutes as part of the leadership explosion.
So we must fervently hope that she does not.
