Wow, all the "short is ew" comments make me and Peter Dinklage feel awesome. (Granted, 5'1" is only a few inches below average, but the point still works.) *puts on that Randy Newman song that was being joked about earlier*
Dwarves are the anti-Mary-Sues. No person who likes writing them would choose a female dwarf, because every Mary Sue wants to be either petite and lithe or tall and willowy, if not Barbie-esque. Granted, you could make a similar case for qunari because of the horns, but at least they can be tall, leggy, and sort of willowy. Dwarves can't.
But Jared Padalecki married a short chick. Kristen Bell is a short chick. So's Melissa Rauch. So's Emily Browning. I could go on. Short can be adorable. More people should give short a chance!
Maybe short people are just what Aimo says: fun-sized, baby.
Eh, I'm not familiar with most of your celebrity list there, but I'm slightly shorter than average myself, and I'm still not a fan of playing as a dwarf for the same reason I don't like playing female elves - in the game itself I end up thinking that they look like they're going to be crushed in combat. And I'm not interested in playing a game and wincing at most of the enemy encounters.
Has nothing to do with real life - it's just how the animation looks (I was uncomfortable with having a female Hawke romance Anders in DA2 for the same reason - he was tall and crazy, so it hit some subconscious "this is wrong" button for me that the larger male Hawke didn't). I don't want to think about a tiny character being crushed by their enemies (or their crazy lover, in the DA2 example).
