As some of you know, I took on the insane challenge of doing a Platinum solo with the Saber Quarian Marksman. More specifically, versus Collectors on Firebase Jade. Last time I did this, I got demoralized quite badly. After a short break from ME3 and some relaxing Pug matches, I thought I'd do it again for the heck of it. Compared to last time, I went in with a completely relaxed mindset and I didn't feel any pressure. I was actually enjoying the attempt, and I had an open mind about it.

As it turns out, I got a lot further this time. Where previous attempts would fail as early as wave 3, this attempt went as far as wave 9. I simply ran out of gels and packs at that point. This guy has to be one of the easiest to kill characters in the game, especially on a map like Jade, but I still felt I did quite a good job getting that far with him. Collectors Jade is probably one of the hardest set-ups, because you run of space in a heartbeat and you get sniped from all angels constantly.

This time, I got a lot further because of good awareness and timing. I had quite a few bogus deaths, courtesy of Praetorian buttlazors, DoT ****, and camping Scions. But heck, I avoided a lot of bull, too. Maybe if I had a better start, I could have made it. Later on, I almost felt as if - I - was the one trolling the enemy. Who knows, I might pull this crazy personal challenge off some day. Each time I do an attempt, it seems I learn something new. During my first attempt, I had no clue about the timing for this challenge. There's a unique balance required to handle the Collectors on Jade. After a few attempts, I'm starting to get the hang of it. And more importantly, it's getting fun!

Has anyone ever done something like this: a challenge to yourself as a player that is utter scruitiny and that challenges you at all levels? If so, what was it? Please name the character, weapons, etc.

What you're attempting to do is extremely hard, you will have my great respect if you succeed (well, you already have it, but you know what I mean).

 

To be honest, I don't think I have done such a hard platinum solo. I have soloed the hardest maps, but it was with easier kits than the Quarian Marksman.

 

I remember a massive troll on Hydra, with three times in a row (!) devices at wave 10. After the first two attempts, in which I got each time the most horrible device (in the big open space, near the ammo crate), I was thinking about changing the character I was using (krogan sentinel) or trying an other map, but I finally persevered and succeeded at next attempt.

Yes, Shadow puree SS and melee build, Wraith (VIII-ish back then) against Gold Cerberus.

 

At the time Shadow was my favourite and I like role-playing stealthy characters. I always end up with the thief character. So it came natural to me. Shadow was the character I took when new maps were to be explored. I was somewhat confident and able with silver solos but had only done Krogan Gold solos.

 

I took her to various maps and quickly realised that dragoons were my main nemesis in the solos. (Apart from one turret spam on a Dagger attempt). So I looked up the budget and decided to drain all the Dragoons first. Which is easy because they are likely to be the first to come at you. After another failed Dagger, I moved to Vancouver and had a solid (not flawless) run that was challenging and included the stealthy ninja stuff and head collections.

You might want to mod the objectives so you won't get devices on wave 10. The worst thing that can happen with foolish solo attempts like this one is to be defeated by the RNG trolls.

Why should you be nuts? It doesn't seem *that* bad to me... I mean it's no giant/reapers with a tgi, but geth/jade is faaaaar worse in my opinion.

That said, objectives can be a pita on that map, as we all know.

I say that, as long as you don't get devices (maybe mod em out?), you'll have it done in no time!

Edit cause I noticed what I said can be taken the wrong way: I didn't mean to diminish your challenge or accomplishment, just meant to say that I'm sure you'll get it done!


Also, a challenges to myself... Well lots of them I guess. I remember going sub 20 with the slayer on gold on January 2013 was pretty damn hard. I tried a real shitload of times, mostly rage quit or failed because of devices. At the time the only characters that had been sub-20d were the kroguard and the GI, so... It wasn't that easy. But i remember the satisfaction when i pulled it off Looking back now I almost laugh at how bad I was XD

Also, going even more back in time... My first gold solo, with a drellguard. Well, believe it or not, I was so inexperienced that it was a real challenge to me. I remember being so happy when I managed it... There's still a (shameful) video of it somewhere XD

He - is - solid character. The problem with him, though, is how easy he drops. Add to that, how the Collectors are great at pushing you out of cover and the fact you run out of space to move quickly if you're unlucky, and it's a real challenge.

I did jade/geth with arc pistol saboteur. It was a PITA, took 55 mins to complete. I tried it a dozen times or so that I don't even remember the objectives in the successful run.

Geth/Jade and Collectors/Jade are both really hard, and each of them presents different hurdles that you need to overcome. For Collectors, the main problem I have is with the Scions versus all the faster units. The former are great at obstructing stairs and escape routes, whilst the other units keep pushing you out of cover. And with the Quarksman, it's a split second and you're dead. So, you have to move every two seconds. The Geth are challenging in their own way, since they stagger the crap out of you.

Actually, since one goes full fitness, he has a decent amount of shields usually. What makes it hard to play him is the lack of any staggering means whatsoever, or in general lack of any way to avoid getting shot. It means that you're not allowed to make mistakes, basically.

 

But stay onto it, I'm sure you can do it!

Collectors are difficult on that map, but just wait until you fight Geth on that map on Platinum. It's not even fair anymore. You can try watch INVADERONE's videos, he solo'd on that map with Geth on Platinum twice, and they're both on videos.

I find the Quarksman one of the hardest kits to play. It does sound like a pita considering the map. Well I can't really give anything constructive to say on the matter except you have my support good sir

My attempt at soloing gold with the MQI was my boldest, i got through the wave 10 objective on Geth Rio 

 

No box of shame but many arc grenades were chucked

 

my only solo gold attempts that weren't kroguard Reegar cheese were QMI, both got through the wave 10 objective
