Hey guys I have a question.  I have definitely soloed loghain 40 times with a lot of characters (I am talking no poultices as I think using one in the duel is bull crap since he doesn't have any).  But ONE character that it just seems to be 50/50 against him for me is a Templar/champ dex tank (using a The Rose Thorn at this point as my Dex is through the roof). It is basically who gets better rolls as me and loghain both have insane defense.  Anybody have better luck against him with this set up? I am not talking about having a Reaver in the duel as frightening appearance makes that fight a joke. I am specifically talking Templar/Champ dex based tank.

 

I guess I shouldn't expect this build to do well in a solo fight? It is definitely a support build. Extremely strong in a group. Cauthrien could not touch me (in the boss fight not the one before the Landsmeet), Anybody disagree? lol it just urked me that I had to chug 1 poultice in the fight.  I fought it 5 times with the same build and won every time but some I won clearly in 3 of them and 2 I had to heal.... 

 

Build

 

STR around 42 base around 50 with gear.

 

DEX close to 70 im at 134 defense with shield wall and higher with shield defense

 

CON no points invested just the fade stuff and the lifegiver ring.

 

Talents, all defensive lines and up to shield pummel on the offensive side, all champion and Templar talents.

 

Gear.

 

Knight Commanders Plate (probably an issue as its better for mages but its fine against every physical boss even the high dragon!)

Aeducan Shield

The Rose Thorn

Helm of Honnleath

Warden Commander boots (tier 7) for the 50 stam

Warden Commander gloves

The ring from Shale DLC with STR, Dex and attack

Lifegiver

Spellward

 

I have wade's plate on Alistair. since I am the main Templar this time around and did the fight with the set and had similar results.

Holy Smite is recommended for so many battles. Also, remember he can also create Knockdown effects, so try and interrupt those if possible.

The Alistair vs. Loghain duel thread has quite a few posts devoted to tactical and build aspects of the duel.

Your strength is a bit higher than that of a defence-specced Alistair, meaning your chance to make things like Shield Pummel stick is merely low instead of zero. Shield Bash/Pummel and the War Cry knockdown are especially important when Loghain activates Perfect Striking. Physical resistance is important, and with things like runes, Rock-Knocker and Dead-Head Charge it can easily be boosted up to the resistance cap of 100 or the resistance chance cap of 75%, whichever happens to be lower.

I haven't done the math on Holy Smite but the chance that it does any good must be so small as makes no odds.

The Blood-Gorged Amulet and Lifegiver can be extremely handy here, to reduce the imbalance vs. Loghain's high HP.

Loghain is level-capped at 20, meaning the Warden should not be higher in level to avoid skewing the results. Difficulty should be set to Hard for the same reason (to remove a slew of hidden player bonusses).
