I could see any and all of them returning so...any more reasonable/more backed opinions? (I didn't read the books. Someone could be dead for all I know.)

I'd say Nathaniel has a pretty good chance if alive. 

 

I'm thinking at least one other DA2 companion other than Varric will probably show up at some point too.

I think its pretty feasible that Sebastian, ******-mad over Kirkwall, returns. And I could see Aveline too as some sort of pseudo-military figure in the Free Marches.

 

Anders+Loghain+Carver are dead as ****.

 

With the elf thingy thing happening I could see Merrill and Velanna in it. Although, I hope its more like they're there because elf stuff and not because HEY REMEMBER ME!

 

I'd love to see some Warden-ized companions like Oghren and Nathaniel. Finding Oghren ****** drunk in a pub telling Warden stories would be entertaining.

 

I'm unsure about Sten, Bethany, Isabella and Fenris. Maybe Fenris is teamed up with Sebastian to murder all mages and Bethany is helping organize a resistance. Isabella can just be boating around and banging everything.

 

And as much as I'd be amused to see that stuff, I'm honestly not sure in any way shape or form how realistic or necessary most of it is.

Why would Bethany return? Apparently the default state has a Mage Hawke preset, so that's one dead Bethany right there.

Carver and Nathaniel or Stroud since we are going to run into wardens.

I could also see Anders popping up if he is still alive.

Aveline can't die and it wouldn't be a huge leap for her to show up in Ferelden's royal guard or something like that. I'd love to see her again.

Would love to see some of the old Wardens again. Sigrun and Velanna in particular.

I wouldnt mind seeing anders again since I always keep him alive in my playthroughs. Him showing up doesnt seem extremely unlikely.
Its too bad Zevran isnt going to be back.

Because in my default playthrough, since I am not a Mage, my Hawke wasn't a Mage. He was a warrior. So, Bethany is alive and a Grey Warden. When I go to the keep, if I can, I'll make sure she is a Warden. If Warden or Templar Carver returns, I think it's just as likely Warden or Circle Bethany would.

With Carver/Bethany greatest problem is that they can look quite different depending on what preset of Hawke people used while in CC, so it would seem that bringing them back is rather unlikely. Other Grey Wardens, however, would be quite possible.

If Gideon Emery is returning, I think there's a fair chance of seeing Fenris again with the right save states from the Keep.  Gideon Emery has such a distinctive voice and if he's used for anyone else in a Dragon Age game it will make us think of Fenris anyway.
