....you know....I might try out the 4 mage party on a dragon, just to see how much damage I could pull off.

It's worth a shot.  Hit Points probably won't mean much against it, and if you have at least 2 mages with Barrier that's a great deal of protection... yeah... I can see that working pretty well tbh.  Especially if you can do elemental damage that exploits the creature's weakness.  I don't see how a warrior can really do all that much here, but then again, we don't know much about their non-weapon talents and specs... they might also have game changing passives, you never know.

At the very least, I'd completely strike out any frost spells in their 8 slots. They'd all have Barrier, Dorian would have Revive, Energy Barrage with Fire staves, all their respective Focus powers, any fire spells, and all other offensive magic. Dorian though would be dishing out all the massive fire damage though. That said, Solas ( and possibly me) will have Firestorm to boot. :)

Based on what I've got written down for this team so far, I think my best bet would be taking Dorian, Cole, and Vivienne to kill this Ice dragon.  That's Storm/Inferno, Non-Elemental, and Inferno.  I would take Solas, but I really do like the idea of Cole starting the fight with a series of powerful archery attacks... plus, he can (probably) use Stealth to avoid the dragon's notice long enough to reach downed allies so that they can be revived (I won't be learning the Revive spell).

And actually, that just reminded me of the Resurgence Focus power... if Dorian has that in his Necromancy tree, he's going to be extremely useful in fights like this...  maybe his pets are good at drawing aggro even without Taunt?

Unfortunately, this just isn't my Inquisitor's ideal match up.  He has Energy Barrage and probably a fire staff, but that's about it.  I have no idea how useful the Spirit Blade will be, so he'll probably be casting Barrier for most of the fight...  Maybe I will take the Stormbringer passive after all...

When i go dragon hunting im planning on taking a S&S Tank, Archer and two mages built to exploit its weakness and toting barrier. hopefully the tank will keep the squishies safe from harm apart from the odd fire/frost ball which ill try and dodge with fade step etc.

Damn, I just remembered that Resurgence thing....that's definitely a game changer. I'll definitely have Dorian equipping it. That might free up the slot I had planned for Revive.

WAIT. HOLD UP. If Varric has the Hail of Arrow talent from Artificer, which doubles all Archery attacks...what if you used that along with Full Draw....that's downright deadly.

O_____O

I'd at least leave Fade Step in for everybody - otherwise maxed out Inferno. Spread em out in perimeter, and alternate between offense and barrier with all mages. If a ice blast is coming their way - FADE STEP - continue assault.

Well...depending on how much the respec amulets are, I might just buy a few to max out Inferno trees for the fight.

And yeah, Fade Step so that the mages can dodge.

That's... a lot of damage... xD  You do need a full Focus bar going into the fight to get the most out of it though... Full Draw is kind of weak without the benefit of an undamaged target...

Oh yeah, I know. I'm just thinking midfight, what Focus abilities would be useful. Firestorm, Resurgence, Hail of Arrows are all game changers. Hopefully you can target with the other Focus powers too.

Whatever those powers are... it sucks that we only know 4 of them...  the ones we know of are pretty damn strong, so I assume they all are.

Haste.

... btw, you don't think... Assassinate is a Focus ability now... ?  :s  That sounds like something they would do...

Damn, I completely forgot about that. Ok, yeah, we've got 4 downright deadly Focus spells and talents right now. I'm very excited to see the rest. I think Tempest will be elemental in nature, Assassin will be pure damage. Templar will probably be something Holy Smite-esque, and Reaver will be something that packs a wallop but will probably hurt the Reaver. I bet the Champion is gonna have massive party wide buff.

As someone who loves to experiment with the main characters and the companions skill trees, Imwonder just how much and how often we can respec characters. I mean obviously respec is possible, but is it possible for all characters, is it free so one can experiement and not worry about money, and how often can it be done?

It's not free, it's something you buy (though we get a freebie early on). I think it's called Tactician's Renewal or something like that. But I don't think there's a limit to how often we can use one beyond money and actually having a merchant that sells them.

Also, just noticed this, but we lack the power to provide elemental attributes to our party member's weapons as a mage...

I guess either it might be a Knight Enchanter spell, or we will have to craft/find elemental weapons this time around.

I don't think I've seen any sustained abilities for that matter. Does focus replace them?

We have a few abilities that drain mana/stamina over time rather than reserve a portion of mana like the old sustains...  there are also some mage passives that grant powerful abilities free of charge, like Stormbringer (a lightning bolt hits one nearby enemy every 15 seconds).

Yeah sustained abilities from past games just aren't there, really. You have as Icy said with some skills that you can hold down and it'll consume stamina while it does it's thing. Though most of those (that we know of) aren't like past sustained, for instance Whirlwind, or Counter Attack. You can hold it down, it'll consume stamina + a smaller amount per second while it keeps doing it's thing.

If your looking for something that seems to of replaced sustained skills? Passives, for instance one of the lightning one will call down a bolt of lightning every 15 seconds to a random enemy in 30 meters? Or 25 or... whatever, it periodically zaps stuff. That would of been a sustained in the past game, and I'd imagine other stuff like that will end up being passives. Like getting mana back from corpses? I'd imagine something like that is a passive in Necromancer tree.

Gotcha. That's gonna be interesting to try out on the battlefield.

Indeed.  I have a good feeling about this combat system.

I need to get the game in hand so I can finally decide if I'm playing a rogue/archer, or mage.  I love being a mage, but the rogue is looking mighty smooth from where I'm at.

Yes, rogues look like they will be a lot of fun this time around.  I will be playing as a mage, but I will probably switch to Cole or Sera pretty often...  Varric's crossbow feels kind of weird because it fires so slowly, so I'll probably just let the computer handle Bianca...

I just thought of something...have 4 mages each with Fire wall ability and one (or all) with static prison ability...

Prison them so they can't run away and box em in!!! Maybe even grab ice wall to REALLY box em. Hahaha oh man!! I want to try that so bad!

I usually play mages.
however this game looks so good I want to make a non mage inquisitor.

I cant decide between two handed templar human or a dual daggers dwarven tempest.

Any suggestions?

I thought I had narrowed it down to rogue or mage until the Guard mechanic was revealed and Cassandra reflected a dragon's ice ball in that one video. Now I think warrior may be the most fun class...dammit.
