Tbh I'm not that worried about spending 5 mana to gain 50% damage reduction and deal 150% AoE weapon damage as well as inflict chill/freeze status...  If this is active for 10 seconds, it's already gone far beyond the utility of Lightning Bolt, for example, which costs 65 mana for a mere 200% single target damage and chance or paralysis...

During that time you would cast several far more damaging spells and do a lot of autoattacks actually...

Wait, with Winter's Stillness and Blizzard, couldn't you perpetually keep a Blizzard going as long as you keep regenerating mana?

If that's how you want to do it, I see no problem.  A close range aura of cold with damage resistance sounds kind of useful for a Knight Enchanter (melee mage), however...

It looks like you don't regenerate mana while you're casting.

Ah, damn. Good point. While you're casting, the Blizzard probably halts mana regeneration as long as it's active.

The only cost is micromanaging and agro, because you basically want your mage surrounded to maximise the burst.

I've haven't heard of this but I haven't looked at the videos closely enough. But would this apply to Blizzard since it's a continuous effect that you're maintaining?

You can auto attack with it can't you? Or use your KE abilities?

I hope not. I'd prefer it just work against your mana regeneration.

In the demo with Leliana Dorian doesn't regenerate mana as long as blizzard is active.

So as someone not planning to play a mage, I'm getting the distinct impression I should spec my mage(s) to get Barrier first, get a broad range of elemental spells, and then upgrade those spells (at least one for each element) and then upgrade those skills/get passives. This accurate?

What about opening the encounter with Fade Step while inside a Blizzard?  You might waste a small amount of mana in transit, but you would have the immediate attention of the enemy, and if you manage to find a cluster (like those dwarves in the Deep Roads Twitch demo), you could freeze the entire group within a few seconds... that might be a decent strategy to consider...

Which just make me want to know more about those "interesting ways you can regain mana."

True, though I wouldn't trust that video since they've obviously changed a lot since then.

I'm sure there is some wiggle room, but I would recommend Barrier on all mages, and Guardian Spirit if you can afford it.  Possibly the Peaceful Aura passive as well so that they generate less threat...

Yup. I'd say start with Barrier and maybe Energy Barrage, then get a broad range of beginning elemental spells, then have each mage specialize in a different element.

That's not a bad idea in the abstract. If you have another nuker with you that could allow you to mop them up fast.

New image for the livestream. I'd love to go to the Western Approach today!

Archers with Long Shot might be useful here...

That really depends. I'm not certain how many enemies are going to be resistant to certain elements and what-not. It might be advisable to go down specific trees and get some of the more powerful spells. I think realistically that decision can only be made whilst playing the game as we'll have a better idea of the trend and stuff.

Hmmm, maybe Static Cage to trap them, Fade Step in followed by a Blizzard?

The damage maybe, but the mana mechanic not. While mana was regenerating super fast and Sera was randomly dealing 2000 damage, the mehcanics behind the use of mana to cast spells was well estabilished even in PAX 2013 demo.

Yeah, but maybe the passive that regenerates mana when standing still wasn't there... so I don't think it shows anything final.
