I have a feeling they might mean passives by support abilities. It seems passives will play a large role in determining your effectiveness considering you can only have 8 active abilities.

Blessed blade for a buff
Cleanse/dispel which will help against enemy mages and demons coming from fade rifts
Holy smite for stun/ minor cc
Just unsure on the focus ability. Assuming it could be a buff vs demons that benefits the entire party.

Hmm, by support abilities, they could also mean that they're good at dispensing status effects, leading into CCC's.
but yeah, probably passives >_>

Templar seems like it will be a pretty good spec to play as.

Yeah, I'm planning on running a Templar for my Warrior playthrough. I;m wondering what exactly Blessed Blade will do though. I'm hoping for a sizable bonus of spirit damage against everyone being added, but I'm worried it will affect only mages and demons. Also, do we know if Holy Smite does any damage?

Holy smite did dmg in the previous games didn't it? Also its right down the bottom of the tree which should mean its quite powerful.

Im still amazed by inquisition.
Im mostly a mage kind of player. Indeed i have mage character planned, but i am alot more excited on using a dwarven or qunari tempest and a human templar for this game.
Weird

Im expecting it to do minor/ moderate damage on non-mage type enemies, but against mages, undead and demons should deal ALOT more damage.

While thematically, it would make a whole lot of sense for Holy Smite to work that way - do you think that would still be a viable execution considering we only have 8 slots? It's possible if the designers intent for us to switch out abilities as part of the strategic approach. But if there's another damaging aoe ability that can be used in more situations, it makes Holy Smite much less appealing unless there's a substantial difference in dmg to mages, undead, and demons or additional functionality or factors like lower cooldown, resource cost, or chance for cross class combo detonation.

In a game involving a big mage rebellion and rifts crapping demons out everywhere? Yeah, I think a specialization based around being extra good vs those 2 things would be solid, even with the supposive scary 8 hotkey limit. ![]()

However, in the old Redcliffe footage, when iron bull used smite he followed it up with a whirlwind attack.
By the looks of it, the stun was fairly effective, the enemies being reduced to training dummies.
Im hoping that the Templars cleanse ability will affect fade rifts like the mages dispel does.

I know right? I keep trying to make a dorian without dispel... but I always end up thinking: wtf, no, this just doesn't make sense, enemies are going to have barrier all the friggin time! I need that handy... Plus it's a combo detonator, that works in it's advantage. It'l depend ont he usefulness of the necro tree, I suppose...

I will play as a 2h Human Templar in my second playthrough, and I am pretty sure it will be perfectly viable.
Depending on the difficulty and the crafting system, I think we will be able to even be the Main Tank and still do a lot of damage.
Since attributes are no longer placed by leveling up, this means there is no permanent attribute setting. We will be able to have a dps armor, and a tank armor, and switch between battles. So if we encounter a dragon or a boss where we need to be tanky instead of doing DPS, there is no respec necessary, we can just change equipment and there you have it. It is a nice change, something very fun for DAI compared to the previous ones.
I am planning on using the hook, both taunts, the templar abilities, spin to win and mighty blow, or something along those lines. Depending on how I get the skills, detonators, etc. For boss battles I will use taunts, for trash I will use the hook (it just seems so fun lol), etc.
We will have enough guard creating abilities, and we will have an AoE stun. It should be enough for our dps to break through. For bosses, I guess we will have to rely on the crafting system, which is something I like. Spend time crafting a Frost Resistance armor, and engage that Frost Dragon. And then go to craft another armor for another dragon, it seems quite fun!

I hope I can choose my first spell or talent.I do not like a pre-defined, because then it is not part of what I want, I'll have to redo the character.
You can't, but your first respec potion - per devs - is for free, after the Prologue. Your single ability at the start is pre-set at Level 1 but easily changed very quickly. At Level 2, you obviously get to make choices. And you can seemingly easily respec that first point if it wasn't what you wanted.

and even then, it'll probably be something you want anyway. I mean, for 2H warriors it'll be block and slash, for mages it'll be barrier, for rogues it'll be stealth. Something very general that 90% of the people will get.
PS: no, this is not an invite to quote me, saying: "I dont want barrier, block and slash or stealth on my PC!!? I hate that I get no choice blah blah nag nag"

I agree I don't want guard on my tank at all and maker forbid a mage cast barrier on me. I'll lunge and slash that pansy faster than Isabela dropped her panties for my Hawke.
(I love guard & barrier btw)

Quick question about specializations:
We get them through quests. Okay.
Once we pick one, we can't pick another or change the one we currently are. Okay.
But since we get them through quests, I assume we don't get all the specialization quests at the same time?
The only reason I ask is because I can't decide between Templar or Champion, and what happens if get the Templar quest early in the game and the champion not until late game?

I doubt they would do that or design it in a way that favors one out of the three. They're smarter than that.

Support doesn't necessarily mean "buff-caster". It can also be used as a tag for tanks and controllers.
It makes sense that Templar be a defensive-oriented specialization, since the whole purpose of it is to be protection and suppression of magic that "common" people do not have.
I imagine Champion is a hybrid defense/offense spec and Reaver is obviously for all-out damage.

@LaughingWolf: they have stated that you will be able to see all the specializations (the skills them selves) before picking between the 3 available to you. Companions also don't start with there specialization (but you can't pick the 1 they get, Cass will always become a Templar, for instance). I'm not 100% sure if they mean the event that leads to all the companions getting there specializations (singular event, not one for each) is how we can check them out before picking for our selves or if we can look at em via the war table or something before picking... not sure honestly.
That all said, folks have seen via some streams some kinda skull you craft which is extremely reminisce of some lore behind necromancers making some kinda skull or something for training or whatever. I'm currently under the belief that we do a singular story even that results in all companions gaining there specialization and lets us craft an item required to train in said specialization of are choosing. We'd be able to look at em via the companions (or some other menu) and we collect/craft the item required to do are specialization. Necromancer skull thing, for instance, or wyvern/dragonling blood for the Reaver is another example of something to collect/craft to earn the specialization.
