Well, Blackwall just upped the ante vs. Cassandra and Bull as the warrior in my party. All three are on some very equal footing now.

Wow, great job Eluvianus Rex!

My initial thoughts:

I am pretty disappointed with Assassin. The passives are great, but the abilities themselves seem very "blah." Nothing is that crazy when it comes to damage dealing, and what's with the knockout bomb? Don't we literally get that in the form of powder in the Subterfuge tree? I hope its upgrade really changes this up. Assassin has rehashes of Dual Daggers and Subterfuge, honestly I'd rather it retain its own identity. Mark of Death went through a weird overhaul...why would I let an enemy live for any second longer than when he could already be dead? What's the point of building up damage if not to use it immediately? I don't get the point...

Also the focus ability looks so bleh. Feels like it would only really benefit an All Rogue party, and even then you could individually make them go stealth at the same time, just more micromanaging...it terms of focus abilities this doesn't appeal much to me at all. I wouldn't waste 3 tiers worth of focus on it, there seem to be way better and worthwhile focus abilities to use (Rally, Resurgence, Haste, Rampage, etc.)

Champion is pretty interesting. I love the emphasis it puts on being temporarily invulnerable. Combining it with Vanguard, it should make Warrior Inquisitors and Blackwall truly invaluable aspects of the battlefield. Not crazy about its focus ability Counterstrike, the taunting and the full guard could easily be done in seconds individually, again it's just a matter of micromanaging as opposed to instant effects. The real bread and butter is the counters effect, which remains to be seen how good it really is.

Tempest is a LOT more interesting than I thought it would be. I am truly pleasantly surprised. The love how the different elemental flasks don't actually focus on damage dealing, but instead on status effects. It's super neat. The passives as well are super well done. I can see having all 3 mapped for different situations as a very viable strategy. Didn't think it was possible to love Sera even more, but here we have it folks.

Not sure what to think about Tempest's focus ability though...the description is super poorly written. Don't even know if I understand it properly. If I am, this ability seems like it focuses on dagger strikes...whereas Sera is a trademark archer...can someone explain this to me?

The Focus ability of Assassin still misses, sadly.

WOW champion is awesome.
My first thought was wow, they can summon a tanky spirits, bet necromancers wish they had that skill. ;)

But seriously, Blackwall will be my go to tank. Its brilliant.

So.... I finally got to see Tempest and out of my hopes and speculations, i was right on only one thing. And that was the flask of frost. I figured we would get DR and the chance to freeze enemies in melee.

Was a bit surprised flask of fire doesn't add fire damage, perhaps its an upgrade? Looks great though. It has a knockback and ABILITIES COST NO STAMINA. that's pretty awesome.

Flaskmaster was a little confusing at first, but i think it will mean that my sera and my inquisitor can carry more consumables like rock armor potion or jar of bees. Also, it seems you can have a chance that when you activate a flask ability, say flask of lightning, it wont cost you either stamina or something similar.

I can definitely see what Patrick Weekes meant about how he couldn't seem to be able to make the most out of the tempest skills.

Also, after seeing these skills, my thoughts on archery vs daggers for tempest now favors daggers. It seems to compliment and benefit a more aggressive playstyle, especially with effects that knockback or freeze enemies that attack you in melee.

However with it, brought another conundrum.
Dwarf for magic resistance or Qunari for that melee defence?

If i do go a qunari tempest, then my knight enchanter may end up as dalish elf instead.

Also i don't think i will be having Varric use daggers, he will be using Bianca.
I like the look of that elemental grenade. I think specced properly, Varric will be very useful indeed.

They decided against that since they're now playing on live servers instead of whatever special ones they were one before.

I dunno. This is still the first round, so it could change.

Or what the guy below you said. I dunno.

Edit: Player-dude on the stream just said he was hoping to get a new character. But apparently it isn't guaranteed, but it COULD happen.

Well, I have my heart set on an archer and I still flummoxed over Assassin vs Tempest. I'm not sure how useful Tempest would be since the ice and fire flasks are based on close quarters, yet Assassin feels a bit... boring.

This will be a silly question for some, but do focus abilities take up a slot on the 8-ability bar?  I don't know why, but for some reason I always thought they had their own slot aside from the 8 normal abilities, and I've only just noticed that doesn't seem to be the case.

Not sure what to think about Tempest's focus ability though...the description is super poorly written. Don't even know if I understand it properly. If I am, this ability seems like it focuses on dagger strikes...whereas Sera is a trademark archer...can someone explain this to me?

Yeah, it basically has her perform a flurry of strikes on the enemy.  From what I saw, she just turns into a blur of purple/indigo light and flashes about the enemy "striking" them anime ninja style.  A high single-target DPS ability from the looks of it.  It isn't an archer ability at all, and doesn't even seem remotely related to her actual Tempest spec.

A lot of mage and rogue focus abilities seem kind of out of place in their respective trees, tbh.  Technically you can make them work if you go out of your way to explain them, but I feel like most of them could have better represented the essence of the spec.

Because the gods hate me because that's the tree I want to see the most lol.

They take up the same space.

Though, notably, you can switch things in and out as long as you aren't in combat. So, really, you're probably not likely to need Focus abilities except for certain big fights, so you could switch it in before or reload (game auto-saves every minute or so, so you can practically re-start FF13 style if you die).

So I was set on Archer either Tempest/Assassin, but after seeing a vid of Viv doing KE stuff, I'm back to swapping between Archer and Mage. Honestly the Tempest skill tree wasn't really what I thought it was going to be (it's not bad...just doesn't suit me) - I thought it was going to be elementally DPS focused. Assassin seems a lot cooler, but again, not as cool as I thought.

So I think at the moment it looks like I might be going as a mage with KE? Upping barrier with each hit of spirit blade looks sweet as. Still haven't looked at the Necro tree though because I plan on having Dorian anyway and I'd rather know those as a surprise (same with Warrior trees...I'll keep them as a surprise because I love all three warriors and looking at the trees early doesn't interest me at the moment).

So Champion is less or more Vanguard x2 with 2.5 totally immunity abilities for a short time. So overkill.

And with the latest information, I don't understand the Templar spec redesign. Mostly, I feel like making them the only buffbot resulted in them having lackluster abilities compared to all the other spec individual skills. They look weak has individual getting nothing special only for themselves and their group buffs bring nothing interesting to a group when individual passives and actives are just plain better. On top of that, most of the Templar skill read as demons-only, making the spec extremely situational.

Some comparison ignoring upgrades because we don't have them for Templar (and some of the skill images we have  might be inaccurate now):

Dispel has a shorter cooldown than Spell Purge and is more flexible in term of "landing it" somewhere.

Trick of the Trade is a better group passive than Champion of the Just (10% damage + duration bonus and usable against all enemies vs 10% damage bonus against demon...).

Wrath of Heaven is terrible with demons only has the only DPS skill of the tree.

They should have made Blessed Blade a passive seeing it has the same cooldown as duration for 10 stamina cost (you can spam it), but I guess that giving the Templar two party +x% damage against demons passive looked stupid.

If the missing passive is the same one as the MP Keeper passive with the same icon, the only use for a Templar when there is no demons around (which should happen quite often) is dying on the battle field when the rest of the party is almost dead (+100% health for all! I hope the skill is called Taking One for the Team).

I was disappointed in the Assassin Focus at first as well, but it probably has some niche uses... if all party members are in Stealth, it may deter attacks from enemies/allow the party to escape if they're all badly wounded. A Winter mage would be able to activate Winter Stillness and recover mana for 5 seconds at Tier 3. Warriors might be able to cross enemy lines without taking damage and reposition themselves strategically. Any rogues in the party would, of course, be able to benefit from Stealth bonuses.

But I agree, other Focus abilities seem like they'd be more worth the trouble and more useful. At least using Cole's Focus doesn't drain any of the other party members' Focus pools... so it'd make sense to activate it if you're ever in a bind. *shrug*

Well finally we have all the trees! Thanks everyone  :)

Definitely going for Winter + Spirit + Knight Enchanter for my first playthrough

I'd replace Winter with Inferno.  The passive from Inferno that gives you the +1 cooldown for every spell you cast, plus the spirit blade from KE...means you're going to have crazy-fast cooldowns with your other spells.

I personally think the assassin skills look pretty good. I mean it basically stores up all the damage done to the target while it's on then triggers it at the end (or prematurely). That's relatively similar to how it used to work as far as overall damage output. It just doesn't enhance each hit directly, it's a build up then re-does it after 8 seconds (or you can end it sooner).

Also, hidden blades, 3 hits at 300% dmg? 900 dmg isn't exactly garbage. :P

Actually, seeing as we haven't seen the upgrades for the actives in Tempest, I'm assuming the upgrades for the respective fire/frost/storm elixirs add elemental damage to your attacks? I hope so - would redeem it for me.

Whoa... but one thing I missed before in the description for Cloak of Shadows--"The entire party remains undetected for the duration of the effect, even while attacking." So... the entire party could potentially attack/take whatever action they want without taking damage (unless they're hit by AoE, etc.) for 9 seconds? O_o Hmmmmm.

Spoiler

Guess what, Eluvianus? GUESS WHAT?  :o

At 23:22 in this video, we see Immolate's upgrade, Wildfire.

Wildfire

Immolate burns hotter and has a shorter cooldown time, allowing you to rain fire upon your enemies more often.

Fire Damage Bonus: 100% Weapon Damage

Burning: 75% Weapon Damage per second

Cooldown Reduction: 4 seconds
