(I am pretty sure ICEQUIN will be happy with roleplaying an Ice Queen Mage lol)
YEEES!!!

This isn't about being surprised or expecting it.
It's about liking the direction or not.
In the end, we are all going to adapt to the new system, we don't have much of a choice, obviously.
One thing is for sure: if this magic system will be carried on in future DA instalments, I won't play a main charater as a mage ever again.

I like how spell/ability icon color seems to reflect the nature of the ability itself rather than what tree it belongs to, but for now it continues to make speculation difficult.
I'll be happy when November rolls around and my Inquisitor can cast Stonefist, but it will still bug me that it'll feel shoehorned into whatever tree it happens to be a part of. It won't be the only spell to feel this way: the "blink" spell feels bad in Winter, when by contrast we have an undiluted fire tree in Inferno. If Stonefist is part of the tree with a lightning bolt as its symbol, it'll feel as though lightning (and obviously earth) is less of a priority. I know people like to kill things with fire, but still.
I suppose I just like aesthetic balance. I know exciting and balanced gameplay has to come first, but it's still too bad.

I agree. I also don't like haste in the lightning tree, much less stone fist. If they are going to make all trees elemental, at least make them well rounded instead of shoe horning random spells into some trees.

I'm not happy about the three elemental trees/ no entropy or creation tree but I have to agree that DA2 did it better when it came to skills. The rest of the DA2 combat was pretty terrible but Origins came with allot of useless skills and allot of wading through crap to get to the good ones. The only tree that did this in DA2 was the Arcane tree.
Yep, the skills trees were on thing in DA2 that were received rather well which makes the apparent decision to rebuild them from the ground up rather mystifying.

I was just saying that most people liked the streamlining of skill trees in DA2. It limited you more but that part of the combat system was allot better as they cut out all of the rubbish.
If we are talking about roleplaying "what kind of mage can I play" then sure this sucks from that perspective but from a skills perspective most of the old stuff is still in there, just in some other form.
They rebuilt everything and changed the combat so there were always going to be big changes made. I feel like I am defending the changes when really I am disappointing too, I just don't think it's necessarily going to ruin the game. There still seems like there is going to be allot of cool builds for the mage.
I'm still more bothered about the only 8 skills in battle thing.

Well, I think building them from the ground up was actually kinda cool. Look at the fire tree.
Flashfire, Fire Burst (?), Fire Mine, Wall of Fire, Firestorm.
5 spells as opposed to 2, and only one of them is a repeat (Firestorm), though the Fire Burst ability is basically Fireball.
I like that we're getting new stuff. It's the direction the rebuildling took that I dislike. I wanted them to rebuild non-elemental spells from the ground up too.
I hope they include Life Drain in the Necromancy tree... or would that be out of the question because it can heal the PC?

It might be in because it's limited to the pc unlike Creation's heal which could be used on anyone.

Yeah! They seem great!!! ![]()
Loving all these combo *-marked skills. And wonder how they work (and sorry if that's been answered elsewhere) i.e if some of them are primers/detonators, or serve as both just can't detonate itself - that kind of thing.
And we've seen "Shattered" with Ice + Stonefist, but can we expect other in-class combos or it's mostly cross-class...? O.o
Some look to be both, the one warrior ability(earthshaking strike?) causes knockdown but also gets a huge damage bonus to knockdown enemies. So in that instance it seems to be both. I think some others are similar but I'll have to check when I'm home. Spells especially could run double duty if all the elemental ones have a chance to inflict their various status effects which can be exploited by other abilities.Yeah! They seem great!!!

I am also very intrigued about the combos.
For what I have read in the descriptions, it seems the skills trigger the combo no matter which is the CC applied, they just say "if the enemy is incapacitated" or something similar. So that would mean that the Mighty Blow would do extra damage to frozen enemies, or enemies in the static cage, or enemies sleeping, etc.
I wonder if that's the case. There are so many CC in DAI that this would mean that almost any second skill would do bonus damage xD
The combo that impressed me the most was shown briefly in the MP gameplay when a rogue put somebody to sleep and Mind Blast inflicts Fear on them. That's pretty neat.

DISCUSSION THREAD: http://forum.bioware...ield-abilities/
I just noticed something in this latest video preview for GameInformer (I think I could have noticed it earlier if I was more observant, because I think this is all previously shown footage): http://www.gameinfor...nquisition.aspx
That purple ability that fires a barrage of your basic attack. I've been so confused about it for a while, because sometimes it seemed like it was in the Winter tree and was an ice attack, and sometimes not. I just figured they were still working on the abilities system and deciding how to handle that one. Judging by the footage though, I think it fires a barrage of whatever element the staff you're using has. So I'm not sure which tree it will end up in, but it seems like it's basically a universal, elemental, single target attack.

^ Have they ever mentioned its name? Or do you guys just call it "Seeker Swarm" around these parts?
And yeah, like I said, I wasn't too observant before. I figured somebody probably already came to the same conclusion. I've never seen it colored anything but purple in the more recent videos, which is strange considering Lightning spells seem to be purple. However, they just switched the Weapon and Shield abilities to green apparently (which I find very odd considering they don't seem to be changing the color of the skill tree to green too...), and this happened just in the last couple weeks, so they could always switch the color of Seeker Swarm too.
Another thing: does anyone have any insight into the little star at the top of some of the abilities' images? Lunge/Slash and Payback Strike both have it but Shield Bash and Shield Wall don't. And on the Double Dagger abilities, Twin Fangs and Death Blow have it, but Flank Attack doesn't. I don't see it on any of the mage ability preview.
