I wouldn’t mind if our Companions taught us the specs; as long as there was an actual learning process, through mini-quests, some cutscenes, whatever; something that added immersion. Know what I mean? Just the “ta-dam: spec acquired” I think is a bit meh (though I like being able to get them as soon as possible in-game – and not being locked out of them until a given point).

On another note: Shall we play a little game while we wait? :P

We’ve talked about customizing our character & companions before, what skills might suit one better than the other. We have yet to meet them and it’s all super due to change at this point. We’re likely to share some skills, able to change “roles” when needed (not limiting them) but what’d be their “specialty” or focus? For a first playthrough what are your thoughts + -? Me?:

Hmmm, this could be fun.

Warriors (I prefer my warriors to be Sword and Shield)

Blackwall - Sword and Shield - Tank all the way

Cassandra - Sword and Shield - mix between damage and tank

Bull - Two Handed/S&S - I need to see the Reaver tree to determine if it's gonna work better as a Two-Handed or S&S

Rogues

Cole - Daggers, damage dealer

Varric - Daggers, more focused on his traps

Sera - Archery

Mages

Vivienne - Totally crowd control and damage dealer. She'll be mainly pyromancy focused.

Solas - Primal spells, plus any Spirit like spells that he uses. I see him as using lightning as his primary element.

Dorian - My boyfriend's gonna be sticking to mostly debuffs and Creation spells. His element of choice would probably be lightning or frost.

Inquisitor - My guy is gonna primarily be the one blowing stuff up, so lots of fire and ice, with a lightning spell or two. He'll probably grab one or two support oriented spells as well. He's gonna be specced as a Rift Mage.

Hm... I don't think I'll have Guardian Spirit mapped very often.  Sounds like we should be avoiding serious damage at all costs rather than worrying about preventing death.  If someone gets so badly damaged that they actually need this spell to activate, it sounds like things have gone horribly wrong and we're going to be wasting potions regardless.  I'd be more interested if this spell actually restored some health when it activates, but right now I'm not sure if it's worth one of the 8 slots...

Looks like Blink is still an Ice spell but has a new name... but apparently it only goes in one direction?  No diagonal or backwards Fade Stepping then?

I think Guardian Spirit is a passive that automatically kicks in when your health drops too low.

A passive?  :o

In that case I take back what I said.  xD

Nice to finally get a good look at some of the passives. If even half of them are that useful and not simply "X attack does #% more damage or larger radius" then I will be quite happy with them.

Let me also say that for some reason, seeing the "Wall of Flame" spell makes me want to turn Solas into a Pyromancer.  I don't know why, exactly, but I like the idea of him mastering Fire and having Spirit as a backup.  So at this point, I think that I'll be giving Dorian Ice (this complements necromancy IMO) and Vivienne Lightning, but all mages will be learning Barrier if possible.  Hopefully Guardian Spirit isn't too deep into the tree because I'd like to give each of them that passive as well.  I'm also thinking that it might not be worth it to learn Fade Step on every mage, since I won't even be controlling them most of the time.  It might be better to spend that talent point elsewhere unless the mage is already learning Ice spells...

I'm confused about static charge being round. I don't see how that could be a passive, so I'm betting its a mistake. I am hoping that it damages as well as paralyzes too. Guardian spirit sounds great though. I plan on my mage using lightning and knight enchanter exclusively, but if spirit has such good passives it might be a great place to spend any points over what those two trees require.

Static Cage is an active ability that was shown off in the Gamescom demo I believe; Solas was using it.  Static Charge, the passive ability in the twitter mage ability preview here, is different.  I'm guessing the passive ability gives all of your lightning magic a paralyzing effect?  Although the wording is strange.  Maybe it's something that builds up over time, and then when it's ready, you can choose to activate it with a basic attack or something?  Or it's like a short ranged aura around you at all times...that would be awesome for Knight Enchanter!

A completely passive paralysis aura that doesn't use mana and can't be disrupted? That sounds cool but also incredibly OP...  Not that I have any better ideas.  I was also thinking that this passive gave all of the mage's lightning abilities a paralysis effect, but the wording is really throwing me off... I can't get a clear picture of what this ability does.

Initially, I would have said that the two are the same, but looking at the Gamescom footage, I noticed that Static Cage's icon is different from Static Charge.

Depends on the AOE range. If your Mage has to be close to melee to make it work and there are enemies who can resist it, even as a % chance to avoid the effect, then it's not so great.

Oh my, those are wonderful!!!  <3

So. Fade Step, huh? I must admit, I was getting used to calling it “Blink”, lol. Very nice however to see it being given a proper name, icon re-coloured…  really loving how this one turned out!

Guardian Spirit: also sounds really really great (I’d love to see the SFX/animation). Wall of Fire: has always been kinda awesome. And finally the Static Charge/Cage deal, passive or not; I’m a bit confused as well atm but I guess we’ll know soon enough either way. All looking too good! :) *thumbs up*

Just a question but what the hell does "Fade Step" have to do with ice magic.

Even with those limitations, a passive ability to paralyze enemies with zero mana cost is far too powerful... it wouldn't take up one of the 8 spell slots and is most likely something we'd be picking up anyway on the way to an active ability.  That sounds way too strong.  You could spend most of the fight just running past groups of enemies while a warrior draws aggro and keep them paralyzed while the rest of the party decimates them...  Obviously it wouldn't be effective on enemies that are immune to lightning, but just how common would such enemies be?  And if that's the type of enemy we're facing, not being able to effect them with Static Charge would be least of the mage's worries...

To be fair, if they haven't changed the tree too much from when it was entropy that passive is at the very end of the tree, after static cage. I looked back at the screencap in the OP and that icon is there, and does indeed appear to be a passive. I'm sure it has more to it than what is obvious from the short description. Either way, I'm looking forward to it. It's just weird that it looks to have such a similar effect to static cage.

You think that's what it does too?  Hm... a final tier passive... eh, that still seems OP to me, but I guess they would have realize that during playtesting and tweaked it or something.  Assuming that's what it really does.

There are bound to be odd spells here and there. For example, stonefist technically doesn't fit winter, fire, spirit or the lightning one, but it will be in one of them for sure.

I like fade step. Sounds like a variant of a haste spell.

Yep static charge is the passive on the bottom right.

Spoiler

It does seem a little confusing. It sounds like an upgrade for Static Cage but Static Cage has an upgrade. Do you think they accidentally put the wrong description on it? Or maybe the description is just a bit misleading.

Now that you mention it, putting the wrong description down makes sense. Especially since it does sound a lot like static cage. Who knows, maybe it is correct. It could be a mini static cage that is generated when you are attacked in melee or something. I did notice the upgrade to static cage. I'm hoping that upgrade adds damage and not just widen the effect.

Me too. I plan to run a KE Inquisitor with lightning and some spirit, Dorian/Solas (whichever I think has the better spec) with Ice, Spirit, and their spec, Varric, and Cassandra/ Blackwall as a S&B tank.
