I'm happy to see that the Fade Step spell actually rockets us forward, because WOW did she go far. This makes me happy because it was super, super short when originally seen (in the Crestwood demo a year ago), and I think there's limited use for that. This, on the other hand, looks like a wonderfully wonderful escape ability that I will probably grab.

Edit: Oh, and they confirmed that the uber-ability in the Spirit Tree is a revive ability that works at range.

Also Stonefist was mentioned as an interrupt, so pretty sure that will be in the game as well.

:wizard: FADE STEP update! :wizard:

<3

Early version:

FadeStepOld_zpsf759024b.gif

New Version:

FadeStep01_zps6dd94e52.gifFadeStep02_zps2cd0b09c.gif

I liked the old animation/vFX for the spell – that (subtler) sort of green energy, de-materializing –materializing again, sorta. And, past initial concerns (why in Winter? Ice trail, or what other FX? If speedy, why not in the tree with Haste? & etc, and we discussed that) – I, at least, concluded that it was for the best that more “generic” magic, non-elemental version, it just seemed more versatile to me. But, no complains here about the new version, in the slightest – I AM a sucker for Ice spells, after all! Loves. It. <3

Now, if there was an upgrade which turned it into the new icy version, that’d be just perfect. Players who don’t dig Ice, i.e wouldn’t have to touch that Winter tree after grabbing the basic version of the spell, everybody wins kinda thing. :)Plus, more customization options for us!^^

Uh... Fade Step looks incredible... that looks more like something one of the X-men would do than a magic spell.  o.O

Crap... I had my mind made up about warrior but mage is looking pretty tempting.

I liked fade step. So the ability at the bottom of the spirit tree is a revive (like I suspected B) ). I wonder what that other ability is with the healing cross/hand symbol?

"and I think the Elementalist do a pseudo-teleport which leaves behind an ice trail to freeze pursuers (and, if done correctly, can be used as an offensive spell)"

Ah, so that's why Fade Step is in the Winter Tree.

Except it doesn't follow logically, if they want to combine effects make it a lightning type spell which is far more, logical for a blink type spell.

So so far I am planning my Dalish mage to be focused on lightning magic and ice magic possibly also some spirit skills. He will specialize in necromancy.

Take it up with them. And how is it not logical? Kingdoms of Amalur did the same thing, and they pulled it off brilliantly.

Fade step lol, it crosses the whole room in a sec! :D

It is going to be awesome for any mage, even for a Knight Enchanter. I am far away, I cast barrier, protective stuff, I am far away still, singing, then I summon my weapons, fade st... OH HELLO

It's gonna be deadly. And a great way to charge the enemies and then escape completely if things go south for you.

Ice is not usually tied to blink type abilities, it smacks of shoehorning stuff together due to the 8 ability limit.

Lol Right? So much for “step”! xD

Looks freakin’ awesome and very useful. Watching the stream, one the things that occurred to me was flanking, particularly those shielded enemies, like: *poofs* “Hey, over here! That’s right, eyes on the mage, turn your back to the rogue with the very sharp blades... ok, now that's too close.” *poofs*  :D

So instead of a blink teleport it's more of a Iceman slide thing  B)

I wish they'd stop referring to healing as healspam, one basic spell with a longish cooldown does not a healbot make.

Oh no, what a shame...

Honestly, I could care less if they're "shoehorning", I think Fade Step looks great.

Relevant to our collective interests.

User

So, I haven't heard much of anything about Healing magic. There IS a basic healing spell, I hope?

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

Nope. Guard and barrier. No healspam.

IMO it's just a codeword used to make the healing spell look like more of a problem than it really was... I wouldn't worry too much.  Just get used to the idea of kiting and micromanaging the team so they don't take damage.  You may even be better off using 3-4 ranged party members, but I'll reserve judgement until I know more about Guard.  Even 2 mages who switch off casting Barrier might be good enough... we'll have to wait and see.

My dalish will be using ice, lightning, stonefist and rift Mage magics :D
Solas will use fire, spirit and his own rift skills.

The new Fade Step totally caught me by surprise!!  it's a lot different from the initial green teleport move.

I like the new one, and I like how the mage almost becomes a "spirit mist" when moving forward.

I do kind of wish/hope the elemental aspect isn't limited to Ice.  while I don't mind it, it would be nice if we could choose from other elements as well, like Lightning or Fire or just leave it as "pure" Spirit.

Rift mage does look really awesome, in fact all the specs look really good this time around. I think I will play that one with a human mage and my Qunari mage will be a KE, Fire mage.

I doubt it, it's in the Winter tree. It probably should have been in the Spirit tree but I guess they just couldn't find the space for it.

Hm... right now I'm toying with a Dalish Knight Enchanter who uses Ice and Spirit, as opposed to Solas who will be using Fire and Spirit.  Just a rough idea atm, but it sounds like it could be cool.  Ice spells to slow and damage enemies, and Spirit for support and CC... plus that Guardian Spirit ability sounds useful for a KE if things get out of hand...

Male Human Rift Mage who commands the elements, particularly Inferno and Lightning, with some Winter thrown in for kicks.
