My plan is to pick out 8 core active skills and then try to grab as many passives as possible... no idea how that's going to work out, but some of them look too good to pass on.  Guardian Spirit will be a must for my KE, but that shouldn't be a problem since I want to do some investing in Spirit anyway.  I doubt I'll actually fill out the whole tree though... I'm not really that big on support, I just want to have as many Barrier-related abilities as possible.  Beyond that, I'm taking the whole Ice tree and probably the full KE tree as well.  Anything else I unlock will likely just be something en route to a passive... as long as I have my 8 actives and Guardian Spirit, I don't really care what else I learn...

Good plan.

I wanna do Full Lightning tree, Full Necromancy tree and then the rest of my points will go into Ice and probably some spirit skills too. Dunno If I will wanna max either of them but it would be nice to have enough points to max at least one if I wanted.

Actually, that's exactly what I have planned for Dorian... :0

....wow, you have already have a pretty good idea of what you're doing. I have no clue what spells that I will end up specializing in except for Rift Mage. Otherwise, the only spells that are must gets for me are Fade Step, Guardian Spirit, and Barrier, as they seem to be the most important staples.

You don't have a favorite element?  That's pretty much the basis of my build... the rest is just based on not wanting to swap out spells for different encounters.

That's a point. Dorian will be my first LI and therefore always in my party (unless I really need to take a different mage) so It would be best give him skills that are different to the ones for my Quizzy. Hmm, I can't give him a different spec but I will focus him on fire and any ice and spirit skills I might need that I don't give to my Quizzy, probably more defensive stuff.

I haven't really planned my party out much. I guess it's time to start.

Out of ice, lightning, and fire, I suppose Ice would be my favorite. I'd like to see more of the Ice and Lightning Elemental trees before i commit to speccing in Ice though.

I hadn't even thought about that.  :P

I'm going to be honest with you... two Necromancers in the party sounds like it could be a very powerful combination.  Assuming you can both summon at the same time, that's 6 party members on the field at once... the zombies (or w/e form they take) will likely be good at drawing aggro as well, making it easier on your PC and companions.  Even with the restrictions, I'm still excited for the possibilities this new combat system presents...

That's understandable... KE sounds pretty straightforward, but we don't know much about what Rift Mages can do.  Depending on the specifics of that class, some elements may be more useful than others...

For myself, my skills are going to be (considering what I know at the moment):

Barrier, Dispel, Winter's Grasp, Wall of Ice, Blizzard, Horror (Necromancy), Walking Bomb (Necromancy), and probably whatever the third Spirit spell is, the (one that's not Mind Blast).

Varric will be focusing on Archery and Sabotage.

Sera will be focusing on Double Daggers and Subterfuge.

Cassandra will be Weapon & Shield and Vanguard.

All this talk of picking abilities.

Y'know, it's funny - no matter how much I plan, I have consistently found that when I actually play the game, my plans rapidly change. I say I want ice spells, but in the heat of the moment, I might choose fire on a level up because I feel that it would suit how the game feels to me better (no pun intended).

Before DA2, I wasn't that interested in Varric - then I used him all the time. Same with Zevran - I thought I would prefer Leliana. Was right about Wynne though.

So actually, the playthrough may end up quite differently from what I predict.

Edit: Thank goodness for re-spec options.

I don't know if you can safely say that all the upper level elemental spells are Focus driven though...

That's fair enough :) (my bets still on them though, at least for now...) xD

I'd even thrown in (though less sure):

Mages: Inferno & Primal (5 actives) x Spirit & Primal (4 actives).

Warriors: 2H & W&S (5 actives) x Vanguard & Battlemaster (4 actives).

On a different note: @Mikey, bumped into these oldies, in case you wanna add them to those on the 1st page...

Hmmmm, I think I'll have Cass as Weapon and Shield and Vanguard, Guardian spec?

Sera - Double Daggers and Subterfuge, Tempest spec

Varric - Double Daggers and Sabotage, Artificer spec

Me - Rift Mage, with Winter and Spirit/Creation

Dorian - Necromancer, focus in Inferno and Spirit.

Vivienne - KE, focus in Winter and Fire/Spirit

Solas - RM, focus in Primal/Spirit

Iron Bull - Two Hand/S&S, focus in Vanguard, with Reaver

Cole - Assassin, with Daggers and Subterfuge/Sabotage

Blackwall, same as Cass.

Mine will probably be...

Inquisitor - Knight Enchanter -  Ice, Spirit

Dorian - Necromancer - Lightning, Ice

Solas - Rift Mage - Fire, Spirit

Vivienne - Knight Enchanter - Ice, Lightning

Cassandra - Templar (?) - Two Handed, Guardian

Blackwall - Champion (?) - Sword and Shield, Guardian

Iron Bull - Reaver (?) - Sword and Shield, Vanguard

Cole - Assassin - Archery, Stealth

Sera - Tempest - Archery, Sabotage

Varric - Artificer - Dual Daggers, Sabotage

All mages will know Barrier, and everyone will have a few misc. skills here and there... mostly just stuff that's blocking access to passives that look useful...

I’m a freak for Ice spells.  First time I saw Viv casting Ice Wall, it gave me so much life I had to pee on a stick to make sure I wasn’t actually carrying a living being inside of me.. (that’s gross and I’m joking, of course! xD). But yeah, I love me those Winter spells! <3

Think I’m gonna go with Winter as my human IceQuinnsitor’s primary, a good mix of Spirit & Lightning for secondaries, some Inferno if I have the spare points (I want to max my spec). Torn between: Rift Mage & KE for this first playthrough. Never had this much doubt about which specialization to pick, a good problem to have, I guess.  But I think I’m gonna end up picking Rift Mage...

That said, I’d also like to try:

A Necromancer (Dalish), rides a bog unicorn and Skyhold’s looking like Tim Burton’s house. A KE (Qunari). A tank, probably Human Templar. And a Rogue (prolly Elf) DD & Archer hybrid.

Which basically means I’m screwed, this is like a 200+ hours game. Good news is, I don’t play a lotta games, nothing outside these two franchises, so, I can take my time. And usually (the Human) is the one sorta “perfect” playthrough I’m most invested & would carry forward. The others +- I can just play more freely, so to speak, to enjoy as much content as I possibly can…

I kind of want my Knight Enchanter to dabble in lots of elemental crowd controls to look like a Battle Mage.

So, Winter's Grasp, Static Cage, and that single target fire panic would all make the cut on my action bar, and then of course the three Knight Enchanter actives to really focus on getting in there on melee fighting however I can

From there it'd probably be Spirit the rest of the way, for what protective and limited healing/survivability I can get.

If occurs to me I will probably also want one really strong AoE damaging spell, just to help draw aggro and make things be very dead when they are in large numbers.

Whew... I just counted out my skills and it sounds like that 8 skill limit might be harder to work with than I thought... if I take Barrier, Fade Step, Mark of the Rift, Ice Wall, and Winter's Grasp, that leaves only 3 slots for KE actives... :/  Maybe I will switch Ice Wall with Ice Mine, but they both sound pretty useful...  If Mark of the Rift doesn't effect non-demons, I think I might pass on that.

@IceQuinn: You like Ice spells? I never woulda guessed... and yeah I got like 6-ish characters planned, will end up playing more but that'll give me a ton of content to stream so im pretty happy about that. Also I tend to play these games 6-10 times. I got like 500 hours into Dark Souls 2 alone, more then that in past BioWare games. Baldur's Gate 2 o.O

I don't think you need to worry.  Every specialization tree we've seen (albeit early builds, but still) have only had 3 actives total.  I'm guessing all specialization trees will conform to this.  It's a good idea because it lets you feel like you're getting the most out of your specialization without sacrificing the bare necessities from the base trees.

Oh my... so much new info.

But the layout and structure of the trees gives me more hope for the 2-hander tree. I hope we'll be able to skip some abilities if we want to.

And yes, probably, the focuses will be a seperate way to get them... I just wonder how.

Watching the gameplay video made me realise that my two planned quizzies are both ranged (mage and archer) so early game that's going to mean only Cassandra will be in the thick of it. I wonder if Varric specced in either Sabotage or Subterfuge will be viable enough that I can have him DW but then give him back his beloved Bianca once another melee character comes along. If that works I could do the same for my own archer or even go through the game equipping daggers or a bow depending on my mood.

I need a good look at the skill trees before I can decide on my mage, ice and lightning look fun but Spirit might be more suited to a First...

I don't know, I just don't know.

Right now I'm planning on Mage Inquis, Cassandra(S&S), Varric(Bianca), Vivienne. Basically just keep Barrier up constantly on Cassandra with both mages, have her Taunt a lot to decrease overall damage taken.

Second party is S&S Warrior Inquis, Dorian, Cole(Daggers), Iron Bull(2 hander)- more of a melee damage heavy group. I dunno if this will work as well given the damage enemies seem to put out though.

I saw Guardian Spirit in action on a rewatch of one of the new videos!

At the 2 min and 7 sec mark

It looks like it's a Barrier effect that pops up leaving you with a little sliver of health.  These Dragons look intense, by the way.

If by pushing away you mean adding back into the series with a more advanced version and options available to said tactical camera then yeah totally they're pushing away from it 100%. Unless you mean all the footage of people who don't play RPG's just never using it in there few hours they got to capture footage? No... not really.
