Damnit, they saw through me!

Although, this means focus builds up on damage? I thought it builds up in general in combat.

My understanding was that it builds up through attacks...and after your party has attacked enough times, the focus meter is ready to be used by everybody.  What I don't know is if you can store focus for later.  Like, what if I want to use my Inquisitor's focus ability and Vivienne's, but save Varric and Cassandra's for later?  When it fills up again, do they now have two focus casts queued up?

It might reset after the encounter, which would mean we need to build it up again for the next battle.

Althought from what i understand, it doesn't reset, but it also doesn't stack, or queue up.

So, is focus pooled like health potions?  As in, once activated by one character, it cannot be used again by another character until it's built up?  I think focus build up unique to each character fighting would be a little better.  But if it's pooled, I guess that makes a little sense.  It might be too overpowered otherwise.

This is what the devs have said about Focus... http://forum.bioware...-dai-combat-qa/

How, exactly, does focus work in the game? —RJ May, Facebook, United States

[DK]: Focus is earned as a party, but spent as an individual. Focus is given to all party members when any of them damage a foe: this allows lower-damage characters like defensive warriors to fulfill their role while still accumulating focus. After enough is earned, a character can use an ability that costs focus. That character's focus is then spent, but not the focus of their allies, who can still use it for their own abilities.

[ML]: Focus requires you to think long-term. You may need it to get out of a sticky situation, or you may want to save it for a particularly tough battle you're anticipating. Because focus abilities can't be used every fight, the combat team has been able to "turn up" their effectiveness. They can be real game-changers if deployed strategically.

lol... I hope Cameron Lee redeems himself with some stellar gameplay... :P  j/k... I think he's pretty cool, but I do hope they give us a masterful performance to really show off what the heroes can do.  They've looked like total scrubs in every non-doctored video... :/

Thanks for the heads up, though...

I don't know if this has been already posted, but... has somebody noticed that mages get 2 less abilities than the rest? (1 spell-1 upgrade)

If I'm not mistaken, the rogue and warrior basic trees are made of: 14/14/12/12 whereas the mage's ones are: 14/12/12/12

Why? :(  I demand another spell in the Storm tree! :P

That's even worse!  I would be way too tempted to keep one weak enemy alive in a fight intentionally so I could let my Group Heal cooldown go all the way up and use the ability!

Actually, i found an abuse even without this.

It builds up through combat right?

So i'm gonna run around, find, say, 5 boars in the wilderness, build up my focus, and then go to where i'm supposed to.

Oh, okay.  Thank you for informing me.

I think I'm going to enjoy focus abilities quite a lot. :)

I’ve been reading a lot (img below). So. The following… “predictions”, in NO WAY, could be wrong:  :P

il_340x270.636626142_2lis.jpg

Those Focus talents seen on Specs: Companions only – the Inquisitor’s specs will likely share the talents but in a different layout with only 3 actives. I’m rolling with that for now. Why???

- Those Focus spells chosen for the Companions are a way of personalizing them – as we’ve talked before, it was not out of the table that a skill or two would differ to better suit their personality, preferred fighting styles and backgrounds: notice how Hail of Arrows while not the best fit for Artificer, it –screams- VARRIC.  Expect the same for all other Companions, it’s not *necessarily* about the spec, but the character who has it (which IMO is very cool).

- On that note: just because you see Stonefist and Fire Storm on SOLAS’s Rift Mage spec, that doesn’t make it “another elemental tree”, that makes it Fire Storm is Solas’s Focus talent. Rift Mage is still very much what it says on the description; expect Force, physics, crushing-based. Forget Earth about “Stonefist” (if that’s still its name). That’s matter being conjured out of the Fade to be hurled at foes to crush (shatter! & other detonating effects) and knock them back.

- I’ve considered other possibilities. As many pointed out, Redcliffe Quizzy had both Stonefist and Haste. Plus: We’ve seen Viv casting Firestorm more than once (which breaks the pattern, that’d be Solas’s Focus unless we’re getting repeats). But anyhow. These couple other theories make less sense to me, mostly because they take away the ID factor for Companions – they have their stories & have had many battles, it stands to reason that, i.e Varric, regardless of being this more gadgeteer kinda Rogue (Artificer as spec); his FOCUS, his special ability, what differs him, would lie in Archery (Bianca!). The Inquisitor, on the other hand, is our character to make.

- The Inquisitor: has Mark of the Rift (confirmed a Focus talent) & that’s gotta go somewhere, and that somewhere is probably where we’ll find the other (all 4 of them for each class – for a total of 5 with MotR) for us to choose from (can't wrap my head around Focus being forced into the Inquisitor's spec, when it's not pre-determined, acquired at different points in the story + where would Mark of the Rift fit into this? So... O.o). I also believe Mark of the Rift will be our 1st (free!) Focus Talent and presented early-esque in the game, too; to introduce us to the mechanics of Focus (like, a tutorial of sorts) and so we can plan ahead how we’d like to build our Inquisitors.

Good to know I won't be missing out by not pursuing the left side of the Spirit tree... that +3 Con is a nice change of pace, however.

Full Draw is NASTY, and by nasty I mean HOLY CRAP 800% Damage...and ANOTHER 800% at full health?

Guess it pays to plan and have your archer line up their shot for that mage in the back at the start of the fight.

I loved the ice glyphs we saw the enemy mage cast!

I wish that passive followed barrier rather than dispel and the passive that reduces aggro. It would be great for my KE, but that other passive would be a real hindrance to a KE.

Yeah, I'm very curious to see what the capstone ability is for the far right of the tree. So, the Spirit capstone spells as of now are Revive and Rejuvenating Barrier.

That's exactly how I feel.  It's just not worthwhile to go through two other abilities, especially when Threat Reduction would probably mess up what I'm trying to do with this Inquisitor (also a KE).  I can't even learn Dispel on this char even if I wanted it (which I don't.. but still, the option to swap it in if I'm facing Venatori would be nice).

Well, it shares the same icon as the Spirit tree, but I have no idea what that would mean...  I hope it's good, because I would consider learning Mind Blast to reach it and I will likely have a lot of leftover points to spend...

Alrighty then. So it has been confirmed that the Focus abilities are in the Spec trees....that leaves me wondering what the Templar has for it's Focus talent. Hopefully, it's something new and not just Holy Smite.
