Yeah, I think this is accurate. Those three will probably have roughly the same damage.

The only other first tier spell to probably do a hell of a lot more is Immolate.

Yeah, I'm thinking so, given that at 11:07 it pretty much one-shots a shade (granted in a demo where tinkering was probably done to abilities and lots of other things).

It gets frozen in the fight so no :P

This was played on hard so I imagine that is why it's immune to so much.

Sorry, I didn't actually watch the video... I'm trying to limit exposure as much as possible, so I haven't seen some of the most recent demos.  In any case, I'll be playing on Hard so most of my team will likely be useless when it comes to hampering these things... thankfully the Inquisitor will be able to set up some combos that the others can exploit, so it should be fine.

*snip*

And I believe I have just found my favorite fire spell.

....I have perhaps a dumb question...If I face a group of enemies and raise an ice wall...is it possible for an enemy mage to melt it with fire magic?

What do you guys think the over/under might be on the odds we'll see Knight-Enchanter/Tempest/all the unseen others tomorrow afternoon in Bioware's stream? Any chance that the fact that they'll be showing off spec abilities soon is why a dev like Weekes has been less tight-lipped than before?

I really want to see what the other spec trees looks like now that they've been reorganized/reshaped

If we don't see the specs, then I'd like to see Battlemaster and Vanguard in detail... we know almost nothing about these trees...

Interesting question... but I have no idea if it's that in-depth or not.  It should be, though.

I might be slow on bringing screenshots cause my class runs through the damn stream, and I gotta take notes tomorrow, so I can't stealth watch. As soon as I get out though, I'll grab screenies!

I actually checked the skill description, and it says 300% Weapon Damage, which is identical to Chain Lightning, BUT it also does 75% Weapon Damage as burning damage, so that's really more damage. Plus there's still an upgrade.

Then there's Wall of Fire that deals 200% Weapon Damage...per second as burning damage.

I doubt it. But they could teleport around it!

That would be appreciated, assuming they show them (they might not).

Well, at least Dorian is specializing in Inferno, so he'll be getting that plus the upgrade, whatever it is.

Wall of Fire might be another good spell to use on enemies trapped inside a Static Cage...  If they panic and attempt to flee, they will just wind up getting paralyzed (hopefully while standing in the fire).  2 mages with Wall of Fire would make this even more effective since it would greatly increase the area... hm...

Heck, even if they just quickly mouse over a few skills, I can probably grab some screens. Their menus are such that sometimes when clicking to another skill in a skill tree, it might accidentally catch on another skill or upgrade for a split second, and then they're all mine. ;)

Yeah, great way to trap them against a wall or other structure....I wish Wall of Fire would kind of evolve into a Circle of Flames....that'd be neat.

NP, I have been trying to avoid looking at too much new info. I am staying the hell away from any leaks but I just can't resist the shiney new videos tbh.

So I have been watching but trying not to read any of the quest info and codex stuff, although I have been reading some of it coz I have no self control. :pinched:  I'll also be playing on hard.  :P

Yeah, on the surface magic seems limited, but I think there are a lot of effective applications if we think outside the box.  Not just magic, but all the skills actually...

In some respects, I am finding magic more compelling this time around because we have to think so creatively this time. And while they have removed some of the old spells, I am not finding much of a downside to the new ones that they have created.

I just had an awesome idea for a passive or maybe two passives in the Inferno tree.

Down in Flames (Passive)

When you are reduced to very low health or are killed, an Immolate spell triggers at your location, scorching nearby foes.

From the Ashes (Passive)

If any creatures dies as a result from an ongoing fire effect you created, or an Immolate spell from Down in Flames, you are instantly revived if you are dead.

Maybe OP, but it's a neat idea.

I really like the 2nd one's name. Wish they had included something like that in the game.

Yeah, I didn't like any of these changes when I first heard about them, but now that I've seen them in action and had a peek at the skill trees, I think it all looks great.  Even the 8 skill limit isn't really that bad.  I mean yeah, it sucks not having full access to our powers, but it does encourage us to create very specific builds for each companion so that they have defined roles in the party.  Even more so in the case of people like myself who only wish to learn 8 abilities per character to avoid the immersion breaking aspects.  I was also skeptical about passives being useful, but they are not only useful, some of them are actually very impressive and look like they will change the way we play.  Overall, the new system looks great.  I doubt I'll miss the old spells and abilities at all once I get my hands on this game.

^Exactly. I find it kind of fun building my characters right now.

Even now, I'm trying to decide what spells and talents I'm gonna map to each companion and my own character.

At level 20, I shall predict my Dalish mage shall have mapped (in most situations)

Square: Winter's Grasp

Triangle: Chain Lightning

Circle: Stonefist

R1: Fade Step

L2

Square: Frost Glyph

Triangle: Immolate

Circle: Blizzard

R1: Wall of Ice

This will, of course, change depending on my fancy and what I'm feeling at the moment.

Argh... Fade Step looks so cool... I wish I had space for it, but I don't.  :(  Not on any mage, in fact!  :(

edit: Wait... where is your Focus power?

Hmmmm, I have no clue what I will have mapped, but I do know which spells, probably:

-Rift Mage Active

-Rift Mage Focus

-Fade Step

-Wall of Ice

-Immolate

-Chain Lightning

-Seeker Swarn

-Barrier

Dorian will eventually have:

Immolate/Flashfire

Wall of Fire

Fire Mine

Barrier

Necromancy Active/Necromancy Focus

Fade Step

Chain Lightning

Winter's Grasp

Will switch in the Revive spell before big boss battles if I have a chance.

Haven't taken one in my mind lol.

I'll switch it in once I have it if I'm in a situation where I'll need it. Those abilities are so big I'll likely have time to realize I'll need it (i.e. a cinematic shows a dragon swooping down or something - Patrick Weekes confirmed that they sort of warn you before huge fights).

I don't have a problem switching things in and out. If I'm in a zombie situation with bunches of cold-resistant foes, I'll probably switch those things around. My mage may not prepare spells in the D&D sense, but she probably has a few favorites she keeps close to her fingertips (I.E they're mapped) while others she only uses occasionally if the situation demands it (like Mark of the Rift or Firestorm or even Static Cage or whatever). That's my explanation.

@ andar91 - Fair enough.  No sense in wasting a slot if you don't plan on using the ability with any regularity...
