I will be playing as a mage that supports the Templars.
A healthy dose of masochism never hurts.

Hell Yeah! Being stalked by demons 24/7 and possession is the best thing ever! Wheeeeeeeeeee!
Only if you are a dreamer. Regular mages get by a bit easier.

If the Mages are anti-Chantry and the Chantry supported the Mages shouldn't the Mages want to support the Templars?

No they should be anti-templars so that templars support them too.

Pro-mage all the way. I cannot play as pro-templar I feel too dirty. You don't enslave people because some can be dangerous or bad. That's terrible rational. It isn't right to punish an entire group for the actions of some within that group. So GO MAGES!

my dalish keeper is rolling with the belief that magic exists to protect those who are powerless to protect themselves. Benefit the greater good, but not lord over anyone. Without all the chantry bs that pretty much goes along the same lines. Magic isn't a curse or a gift, it's a tool like any other, and my inquisitor believes it should be used only to help people. And he hates the idea of anything "supremacist". Also bff's forever with Solas

Off Topic: What's the deal with BSN and Mages? it seems like 4 out of 5 posters are, like, deeply invested in Mages being Objectively Correct and free of all blame and the like...
...it's like they think of themselves as Mages IRL. Which is interesting. Magic's still not real, right guys??
Right?
On Topic: I not playing a Mage until my 3rd of 4th play-through, so I doubt I'm going to work toward a society where I'm a slave... Or whatever Tevinter apologists say not-Mages would be in this glorious "Utopia"...

why can't people understand that magic is dangerous and it can't go unchecked, if the Thedas was ruled by mages with no templar supervision whatsoever then Thedas would probably be a demon infested pit of perpetual twilight.

Worth it in my mind, If you can become a truly well disciplined mage, well then you get a massive amount of power without becoming an abomination, from most of what we've seen I'd say abominations are a rarity.

Considering all you have to do is say "No. You cant possess me", im not seeing the issue.
if it was, Tevinter would probably be in significantly worse shape then its in.
Like, smoldering rubble and blood raining from the sky.

If the dialogue and plot options are there then most definitely, though i would have to decide between a truly "benevolent" overlord and Darth Sidious twin brother...would do one of both if i could.

Not IRL, in Dragon age I am a mage, so I view everything from a mage perspective.

In every Dragon Age game? In every playthrough? You never play a Warrior or Rogue and see the issue through their perspective?
The... passion... of some of the people arguing about this feels like it goes beyond being in character. And again, that seems weird, since having magic powers doesn't really strike me as something your average player can relate to.

Yeah in every playthrough in every game. I love mages, and I don't want to roleplay mundies. I understand the perspective of others very clearly, but I just don't care about their opinions.
I have a good imagination and it's very simple for me to imagine something and relate to it, specially if I am given a world that shows me how it works, I just need to understand. The passion is - magic is very attractive to me, having that kind of power is something to be desired for me, and I would love being a mage if I were to live in a DA setting.

I've given them shots, and might even have a canon nonmage import in DAO, but I just don't find it fun.
And I enjoy playing as someone abnormal, empowered, and potentially feared because of it. And then proceeding to help everyone regardless.

To be honest I only play a mage, I cannot bring myself to play a rogue or warrior and sure it goes beyond the game, I like power a lot and in a fantasy setting I can have that power. I've seen Warriors and Rogues played before and the entire concept bores me because they're just normal people, who do the same attack over and over again.

You enjoy being feared but you like to help other people overcome their fear? You enjoy a one time challenge?

Mostly yes, i find the idea of having supernatural powers magical or otherwise utterly fascinating, much more so then swords and bows.
But if i choose to play a warrior or rouge then of course my perspective would change to accommodate a non magic user, from most mundanes point of view mages are inherently dangerous.
But i would most likely play a mage canonically, so i generally tend to view events from their perspective.

Mage sympathisers largely do acknowledge this, our solutions to the issue are different and more humane.

Mages have the power to shape the world and indeed reality itself with just our minds ! You have to accept that this trait is one heck of an advantage.
Additionally, trained and educated mages are more intelligent than the masses. The Circle of Magi, despite its flaws, was a way for mages to get, essentially what amounts to free education.
Non mages / Muggles in Thedas do not, for the most part, get educated properly. Education to non-mages are only available to those who can afford it or to those who can get a sponsor for them.
Additionally, mages do not discriminate amongst themselves. Mage Elves, humans, even Qunaris are all first and foremost, considered as mages.
So am I an advocate for mages to play an active role in governance of societies ? Yes but only if they are educated, which the Circle of Magi does quite well.
Which is why I hope to be able to preserve the Circle in Inquisition. Have the Circle without Templar supervision and let mages police themselves.
