why can't people understand that magic is dangerous and it can't go unchecked, if the Thedas was ruled by mages with no templar supervision whatsoever then Thedas would probably be a demon infested pit of perpetual twilight.

You're completely right a mage ruled society would only last a hand full of months before the entire population became abominations and started to plunge the world in a pit of fire.....

Except Tevinter is ruled by mages, is the oldest human civilization on Thedas, and it hasn't fallen apart and has a fully functioning government.

How strange!

In every Dragon Age game? In every playthrough? You never play a Warrior or Rogue and see the issue through their perspective?

The... passion... of some of the people arguing about this feels like it goes beyond being in character. And again, that seems weird, since having magic powers doesn't really strike me as something your average player can relate to.

I play mages 100% of the time in any game because warriors and rogues bore me and if I can't play as a mage then I don't bother wasting my time playing the game.

Do you like not play settings in which magic doesn't exist?

If there is no magic or something similar then no I don't see a reason to waste my time playing the game.

I will be playing as a mage that supports the Templars.

Me too, in my non-canon playthroughs.

I can't wait to see the reactions on the faces of the Rebel Mages when I crush them or lure them into a Templar ambush.

Loved trolling them superhard in Dragon Age II.

Every time I played as a mage in DA2, I always supported the Templars.

LOL You presenting me with a Darwin award? Didn't you want to purposely get infected by a demon and have it live inside your mind?

Darwin award material indeed.

Awesome how all the mages you encounter are butthurt to know that you work for the Templars eh? Specially the emo terrorist.

Na, nah. That's a lot more healthy and fun than submitting to the templars. Also it's not an infection, it's a beautiful union.

Yeah so beautiful everyone infected by a demon becomes a psychopathic juggernaut capable of conjuring up other demons.

Sounds good. Only I don't like to share, so no, no more demons. We will just eat them instead. Yes Hunger demon is the best, it's like a whole package in one.

Worth it in my mind, If you can become a truly well disciplined mage, well then you get a massive amount of power without becoming an abomination, from most of what we've seen I'd say abominations are a rarity.

Not all mages are born with the same potential or capacity to utilize magic. Senior Enchanter class mages don't seem that common in the setting.

Considering all you have to do is say "No. You cant possess me", im not seeing the issue.

if it was, Tevinter would probably be in significantly worse shape then its in.

Like, smoldering rubble and blood raining from the sky.

I think it's a little more complicated than saying no, like having the mental fortitude to back it up. Think, Uldred's possession.

Also, Tevinter uses a circle system along with pseudo Templars in case things get crazy.

Eh, I usually play pro-templar mages. I suppose it would be interesting to take the opposite view, I just think magic is too dangerous to leave unchecked.

Considering that tevinter is most corrupted and vile society in the settting it isn't tempting alternative.

Not mention that even tevinter still have circles and i doubt that it is nice and funny place.

And I enjoy playing as someone abnormal, empowered, and potentially feared because of it. And then proceeding to help everyone regardless.

That's kind of the theme I was going with for my first playthrough. Of course, I was going to play a Qunari Warrior...  :D

How does have weird mind powers make you the "Best of the Best"? Most of those character types sacrifice physicality, durability or something else that other, more "mundane" classes are far better than them at. Mages in DA are quite fragile compared to other classes. I'm not sure who would win in a straight up brawl between classes, but Mages didn't strike me as being superior to other classes.

Uldred summoned an incredibly powerful demon out of desperation.

Thats like a mage suicide bomb.

I plan on playing as a ruthless mage, human or elf. I always play as a mage, I've tried playing as a warrior or rogue and I just don't connect with it. The idea of having supernatural abilities appeals to me and I like flashy spells  :P

Actually my first playthrough will most likely be a dalish Mage who will seek to help out fellow elves.
So I guess in most situations, she'd side with the elves, however, she won't tolerate blood mages or mages who abuse their powers whether they be elven or not.
I'm basing her off a sort of direct version of Marethari ( who offers at least some evidence in a setting full of mages who abuse their power, that there are indeed mages who are noble and kind. I was very upset with what happened to her in DA2).

Actually, pretty much all my mages are reminiscent of Marethari to some degree.
Snarky Mage Hawke however, gave me the most laughs.
