On another level, does that mean giving people lyrium essentially gives them some magical powers? That's an interesting (and potentially equalizing) development in and of itself.

Tevinter is group of peoples specifically mages and shows what will happen if mages will get their freedom.Simple human nature + magic = bad mix.
Other nations don't share this belief because they aren't mages.
Elven empire have another tevinter
You do realize that Tevinter isn't 100% mages, right? There are non-mages in Tevinter, just about as much as in every other country in Thedas.
"Other nations don't share this belief because they aren't mages"? I'm pretty sure there are just as many mages in, say, Orlais as there are in Tevinter. The ones in Tevinter just happen to rule their nation
And what "evlen empire" are you talking about?

Mages are hated because they have more power and potencial to be more powerful then anybody else, those who lack that are gonna hate like the peasants they are it s like the mutants vs humans the humans are jealous that mutants are better then them peasants hate there betters.

Fenris is an example of this.
Of course, Fenris now has some kind of fantasy-cancer because he doesn't have anyone to maintain his Lyrium brands.

Yep i do but mages are only in control... and it isn't fun to be non-mage in tevinter so well.As i said tevinter is most corrupted and vile society in the setting.
Doesn't matter if orlais have as many mages as tevinter teviner is ruled and dominated by mages so mages are in control , when orlais excluded mages from their society same as most countries and mages aren't in charge.

So if lyrium essentially = magic, why are some people apparently just genetically able to perform magic? Blood also seems to be inherently magical in this universe as well, so on that level why can't whoever learn blood magic?

In arlathan elves were immortal, so they were all mystical by default anyway. Do you have any evidence that mages directly oppressed non-mages?
In any case, the Tevinters overthrew their circle because of their belief that they are superior for being mages.
The other nations' circles are rebelling because they don't want to be oppressed.
Different motives. The majority of normal mages you run across in the DA games hate the idea of a sort of Tevinter-like society, anyway.

My question rephrased might be "why can mages perform magic with no lyrium if lyrium = magic?" If they can't, why aren't they just denied lyrium?

Yeah same fate if mages will get their way in rest of thedas.
So? rebellion chances oppressors in most cases that how it ends.
haha good luck pal your majority of mages burn everything on their way and are nothing more than thugs to get what they want as dai shows... totally innocent and noble.

the power to control reality is not just advantage its huge you could pretty much do anything like erase people you feel are inferior from existence.
There is no such power in the game.

If I understand it correctly, using magic is to draw upon the reality-bending powers of the Fade. Mages are born able to do this naturally, although processed Lyrium can enhance their ability to do this, as well as blood.
It seems that having contact with or ingesting Lyrium can bestow some of this power onto mundanes, but what they're able to do with it is clearly limited in comparison to what (most) mages can do by themselves.

of course mages can do magic it has been shown before, with out lyrium to explain its because they have genetic connection to the fade i say genetic cause they are born not made as been said lyrium just enhances there power in allows them to enter the fade they dont need it to use magic.

duh others were talking about the power not saying it exist. though dreamers come close to reality warpers being the shift the fade into whatever they like.

It doesn't matter if they're noble nor innocent, so long as they win I'm happy. By any means necessary!

Actually abominations are a rarity, DA2 made all mages look like insane idiots that couldn't control their powers but that was because that city didn't handle it's responsibility to the mages well, In fact the circle as a whole does not handle it's duty to mages well, except of course the Tevinter circles. The Mage/Templar war is the result of miscommunication on both sides, neither could ever trust one another and they both have to do what they think is right. Mages want to save their people and so do the Templars.

Also the Vail is so thin in Kirkwall that its kind of dangerous for mages to even be in that city at all.
