Anyone willing to hazard a guess on what that fourth mysterious decorative design choice for the Skyhold will be?

Felderen would be the obvious choice.

Custom?

Those work stations kinda reminds me of Skyrim's Enchanting and Potion Making bench, tbh ^^' I wonder what are those things for in DAI. Something similar? Is it to be used by the Inquisitor or just limited to a specific NPC (ie: like the forge can only be used by the blacksmith, etc)? Or maybe it's just there for decorative purpose (look pretty) ;

It looked like you could interact with them (press A) so they must be for some customizing...it's just there were a lot of them so apart from a weapon making, potion making...I was just wondering what else you could make with them...very cool to see though!

At one point in the game he claimed a lumber plot. I wonder if this has a direct connection to Skyhold.

I totally agree.....skyhold is the most exciting part of the game for me at this point....even without playing I am stoked that I can customize my own castle, rule and hang out in my own fantastic fortress...I plan to take my time and fully check it out....love that BioWare has given us this!

Having our own castle is one of the bigger things I'm excited about for DAI. I know Neverwinter Nights 2 wasn't a bioware game but I really liked the Crossroad Keep bits even if they were a little on the light side.

Always like having a cool main base.

So, thanks to the new videos released today, we've learned that Skyhold is located in the Frostback mountains north of Haven. The location makes sense since its on the border between Orlais and Ferelden, the two countries the game takes place in. Its a nice neutral location with easy access to both countries.

Nothing in a mountain range has "easy access" to anything. Independent of economic and military geography, it might make sense to headquarter the Inquisition there. Taking those two things into account makes the whole thing seem faintly ridiculous.

W.W. Tarn once thought that the Euthydemid Indohellenic monarchy was ruled from a capital at Alexandria-Kaukasia - in modern-day terms, an empire consisting of Afghanistan+Tajikistan+Pakistan+a chunk of northern India, placing its nerve center at Kabul. In some of the most treacherous mountains in the world, in the era before steam and air travel, this is ludicrous. It should not be surprising that modern historians tend to think that Tarn was an amateurish doofus. But at least Kabul has some proximity to the Khyber Pass; Skyhold seems too far south to access the good passes through the Frostbacks (that we know of). Even if it were near an accessible pass, it would still be kind of silly for reasons I have detailed elsewhere.

The most plausible benefits to the Skyhold position are political ones (making the Inquisition appear independent of Ferelden and Orlais while intervening in both) and those of expediency (it's quick and easy to set up there, compared with someplace further away). The latter condition, especially, could well prove decisive: at the very least, Skyhold would serve initially as temporary protection for a weakened, badly-hammered army, along the lines of Bunzelwitz or Sedan. Weakened and badly hammered seem like good ways to describe the forces loyal to Cassandra in the wake of the disaster at gamestart. And from there, one thing might lead to another, until Skyhold becomes the nexus for the Inquisition almost by default.

I can't imagine them building a large castle in the middle of nowhere. Castles as very expensive and are primary a means of defending a location. Therefore, I assume Skyhold was built to protect a pass through the Frostbacks and was abandon long ago. Hence why we receive it in disrepair.

We don't know how many passes there are through the Frostbacks so its not out of the question. It would be expensive to maintain forts at every pass through the Frostbacks, so I can see only a few or even one major route being protected and manned for Merchants to use. That doesn't mean there aren't other passes that could be used but just are not to save costs.

By easy access I just mean its nearby, if Skyhold was located in the far west of Orlais it would be rather hard to get to Ferelden from your HQ, which would seem silly to players. It might also make players think that the Inquisition is beholden to Orlais which is something the devs what to avoid.

That's exactly correct with respect to fortified positions historically; it doesn't hold quite so well when discussing fantasy settings. Sticking a fortress in a forbidding mountain range just to make it look impossible to attack is well-trod ground; many authors don't give much thought to why such a fortress would be placed there in the first place. (Or how it would be constructed.)

Even if Skyhold is at a pass, there are still problems. "Mountain passes" aren't low ground, they're just the high ground that isn't quite as high as the actual peaks. Paths are treacherous as all hell, and are only used for lack of a better alternative. And if you're going to defend a pass, sticking a fortress inside it is pretty stupid: it's ridiculously hard to resupply and communicate with, has no native source of food and no easy way to ship food in, and is far away from places where people actually live (so good luck getting the garrison to do what you want). Intelligent fortress design is putting the place near the exit to a pass, where it can reasonably draw on the greater supplies and resources and population of the lowlands - and where any enemy's siege train and lines of communication will have to wind their way all the way through the treacherous mountain passes.

And if this hypothetical pass is just disused due to high costs, there is presumably a reason for those high costs. Added danger, increased travel time, bad weather - any of those would just be extra demerits for Skyhold's location.

I'm not trying to say that Skyhold is a death trap for the Inquisition that only a lunatic would use where thousands of soldiers are sure to die to no good point or purpose. That, obviously, would be going too far. It is simply not a very good location for a fortress or for the nerve center of a continent-wide organization. It is not so bad a location that it is impossible to seriously credit it, but I certainly don't believe it qualifies as a location that "makes sense", is "nice", and has "easy access".

Err, I think I see a problem with miscommunication. By saying Skyhold is in a mountain pass in the Frostbacks, I don't mean its literally in the pass. Skyhold could very well be guarding the entrance to a pass through the mountains or some other significant site near the location nearby the mountain range. All I was saying is that on the map, Skyhold is placed within the Frostbacks location. That is all.

Im mainly hoping to customise Skyhold with a somewhat multi-cultural looks since my Inquisitor has interest in other cultures. If I cant do that, then a Fereldan-esque design would be fitting. Either way, Im glad the "home base" is rather large and full of content. Should be a much more enjoyable place then the ship on ME. (not that I disliked the Normandy)

If I have the possibility, I would rather take the eluvian for study and bring it to the Keep... If it involves to bring Merril, I'll do.
