What about deadly chests?

I would like to see DAI do more with chests. I would like to see warded and/or trapped chests. I want chests that have traps that explode spraying acid that damages both armor, weapons and life points. I want warded chests that require dispelling to open.

Maybe a few chests that are trapped, locked and warded that require lockpicking, trap defeating and dispelling skills to open.

Maybe have creatures that can mimic the appearance of a chest or loot to attack the unwary. It is probably to late for DAI unless Bioware has already included them. Maybe for future installments of the series.

Just to be completely clear we are talking about container chests right?

But yeah I think it would be a nice little extra but I definitely wouldnt be heat-broken if it wasnt included.

I'm not saying I would complain if DA:I brought in the Mimic chests from Dark Souls, but there would definitely be some tears involved.

Well, there were those chests with ash wraiths in them during the Urn of Sacred Ashes.

Wow, did you do that by accident?

Let me introduce you to the mimic as old as 1st Edition D&D 1977

LOL. I just misread the word "chests" in the title and out came "deadly chess" so I just had to come in here to have a look. However, I second deadly chests (and mimic ones). Chests with traps could really be a nice addition and make the rogue character more interesting.

Ninja'd.

Yes I remember this creature very well. I do believe that Baldur's Gate 2 had a mimic in it.

I misread it too, the first thing that sprang to mind was that one chess scene near the end of the first Harry Potter movie xD

but yeah, trapped chests would be cool.. oh and mimics too, either would work.

Gotta admit, the first thing I thought about was this (I may be biased)

Just because they are powerful and commanding doesn't mean that they are deadly!

I beg to differ- one glance at "happy" Varric chest hair is enough to make a person swoon, but beware!  Lest he unveil the dreaded "angry" chest, or worse, the "vengeful" chest... Strong men have been known to wake up weeks later, bleeding from the nose, with no memory beyond the overwhelming horror they felt as Varric purposefully shucked his leather duster.

Varric wouldn't need to get angry, just puff out his chest hair and competition will run. :)

Mimics wouldn't be bad addition. Trapped chests, I thought there was trapped chests in past already?

They can still be good if done correctly:

Try playing the newly released and brilliant RPG Divinity: Original Sin, then you'll get your share of deadly traps especially when playing on hard mode. Man that game is serious in its difficulty levels and lots of chests and areas in generel are trapped to be 100% lethal no matter your level. Love it  :)

Mimics are kind of a sign that the DM has it in for you.  Which fit Dark Souls, but I don't know it would fit Dragon Age.  Outside of the fade, maybe.

As for trapped chests, they've been kind of pointless in recent games, because you just heal.  I guess the lack of automatic healing might give it a point.

Though I wonder why so many people equip their chests with deadly defences.  Seems a bit extreme.

Especially if they contain torn pantaloons.

Since we've seen demon possessed trees, statues and even camp sites, I don't know why we wouldn't possibly see a chest possessed by a Hunger demon or something who would lure adventurers in with the allure of loot and then try and eat their face off.

Make it so!

Sure, they're tricky, but they're not Tomb of Horrors tricky.

I am so glad I never had a DM that tried to get me to play that.

Although I did know a DM who regularly put in Lurker Aboves, Trappers and StunJellies (although never in the same dungeon... let alone the same room).

Heh D&D also had critters that pretend to be floors, ceilings, stalactites, harmless forest critters, trees, and apparel.  Disguising something deadly as something innocuous was Gary Gygax's favorite activity.  You can always find the old-school gamers.  They're the people who propose setting fire to everything JUST IN CASE.  Then douse the ashes with holy water.  And stake them.  And put them in a jar and bury it in a hidden location.  After setting fire to them AGAIN.

How about a chest you open, that is empty, and you can't leave the room until you put something  in the chest? A spell chest I guess it would be called.
