I have a theory about Cassandra. That she was originally going to be one of (if not the) first announced, as a straight LI. But due to the immense fan demand for a s/s romance, they put it back so as to accommodate that into her character.

Except that fan demand has existed since DA 2. We had Cassandra fan threads with people wanting to romance her before we even had a Merrill fan thread.

Moreover, it's not like this is something unexpected. I'm not going to suggest that queer women all want the same thing, but a fiery warrior woman with a gruff exterior is obviously going to appeal to a lot of women who like other women.

I'm still having trouble wrapping my own head around the 'if I can't romance someone they are dead to me and I will never use them' thing.

If you really like the character enough to want to romance them more than anyone else, wouldn't you still want to get the most out of interacting with them regardless of romance?

Cassandra can still tank for me regardless of what happens.

I'll even heal her sometimes.

This.

Though I also don't understand why people always roll with the same squad. If you have nine companions why would you always stick with the same three? It just doesn't make sense to me from a story perspective to always have certain characters gathering dust and never being used. You also miss out on those characters banter with the rest of the team.

This again!

I'm pretty sure I won't be able to romance Dorian but I'm not gonna throw him to the dogs, it's comments like that that scare me....seriously.

I think that's just personal preference.

I usually mix it up the first/second time I play the game just to hear all the banter and experience different story elements with different character.

There will still probably be a 'main party' I keep going back to.

Agreed! Morrigan's friendship path was one of my favorite parts of Origins. And I'm sure Cassandra will make an awesome sister in arms.

You just answered your own question. :P

After awhile, I kind of stopped wanting to hear Anders' banters.

I tend to use Alistair, Wynne and Oghren all the time in origins, but I've started switching Oghren out recently just for banter purposes, now I tend to switch him for Shale because I love her too.. if I'm playing mage I'll switch out Wynne for Sten or Leliana..I'm getting better!  I just play favourites :(.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

That's same point of thinking I've reached as well.  This is why I still have a bit of hope about Varric.  It would be a wonderful surprise bonus.  I don't expect to get it, so I can't be disappointed if it doesn't happen.   ;)

If you don't mind me asking, what's your opinion?

Edit: I'm of the same mindset as dave, and I can't blame you for being down about this.   :)

My opinion is that I would rather any given character not be romanceable at all rather than them being romanceable only by a certain race.

I can understand why people do it though, because it's easy to get attached to a certain combo. I kind of do it myself quite a bit in both games, though it's easier to do in DA2, because Hawke's companions are not obligated to share any kind of quest, and they generally have their own things to do. In DA:O, I found myself taking Alistair, Leliana (strictly archer) and Wynne/Morrigan around the most, only seldom using Sten, almost never using Zevran, and getting Oghren last so he basically doesn't do anything but help with the final battle. In DA2, I was basically rolling with Varric, Isabela and Merrill for the majority of the game, with Bethany being my solid mage in Act 1 and my obligatory team member in the final battle.

Yes! I love the Morrigan friendship with my female Warden "perhaps even a sister" gets me every time!

I have to admit, My Dalish Warden would have willingly followed Morrigan through the eluvian because she did consider Morrigan a sister and I was a bit sad it wasn't an opinion outside of romance!

If we get a friendship like that again, with Cassandra or any character, I'd purposely avoid the romance even if it was available. Some times friendship is deeper and more special than a relationship in MY opinion.

story and RP reasoning aside - if a NPC is annoying, no matter how hard i try to keep him/her in a party, personal preference always wins. some people don't like spiders very much so they stay away from dark caves and old buildings, others cannot stand specific personality traits especially in people they have to work closely with

Mostly its because some people don't like some characters or can't stand their look etc, will never use them.

That why in DA:O my team was always Morrigan (first time without mods but later with unlocked fem romance), Leliana, Alistair (only bacause i love how morrigan joke/say about/to him) plus my fem warden and in DA:2 Isabelle, Varric, Bethany/Aveline as the rest was so annoing that were used just for personal quests.

Yep. I didn't drag Jack or Oghren around because frankly everytime they opened their mouth I ended up annoyed. (That and dragging Jack around was an exercise in watching her drop like a bag of hammers nearly every fight). I mostly dragged Morrigan around for her utility if I wasn't playing a mage. But really my DAO team tends to be Alistair, Morrigan (and once my patience with her is fried or I rolled mage I switch to Sten), Leliana and Dog.

My DA2 squad tends to be Anders (to max his rivalry), Fenris and Varric. The others I don't like all that much. I might switch it up and switch Anders for Carver for act 1 but the others tend to sit on the bench (unless I'm romancing one of them. In which case they'll replace Anders).

Yep. Team angst with Varric to balance it out.

By act 3 Fenris isn't so much on the angst boat anyway. :P

Yeah, Varric is just the guy in the middle that keeps Anders and Fenris from killing each other on the spot xD

Yup! Its secretly the real reason why he appears in DA:I, to once again prevent the companions from killing each other.

Also, I predict Cole to become our angst buddy this time, so make sure you take him along! ;)

I always used my love interest in previous Bioware games (Liare, Leliana, Isabela), and rotated the other companions/squadmates a bit. There are some characters who see more action than others, of course (Wrex, Morrigan and Varric for example)...and some characters never leave the Normandy/Kirkwall/the camp (Kaidan, Tali or Fenris).

I'm sometimes guilty of this. It usually takes a long time for me to replay a game and I'm not one of those people that make different PCs and finish the game 6 times in a row. I get a bit fed up of the game oce I finish and set it aside for a few months. Then when I've forgotten the story and characters a little I think it might be nice to start another game and then I remember what funny banter I had the last time or a char I had with me did something cool and I want to see it again, so I just kind of end up dragging the same people along.

I do make an effort to change them at least a little  and I always do their personal quests so they don't sit in the camp the entire game :)

I usually switch around character according to quest and how I think everyone fits to certain guest etc. but I still have many favorites I tend to bring along most. I guess I just don't want to miss their reactions to everything and feel best with them on board. Also, they have best gear XD. In DAO I only brought Sten and Oghrein to couple guest, however Zevran is always with me like in DA2 I always bring Fenris.

I don't ever stay with only 3 characters though, I like to switch things around from time to time.

I always bring my LI with me on the first playthrough because I don't want to miss any content with them. I also usually end up leveling certain characters in a way that compliments my character. And unless I level up all the characters of the same class the same way, some companions just end up working best with mine.

I try to vary up my party on sidequests and when I'm exploring, though. But for the main story quests, I just want to have the characters I care about the most on that playthrough, with me. I figure my future playthroughs will favor different characters. Tho that's never happened with Ohgren...

Could be because of how ME2/3 treated certain characters outside of their romantic subplots. Being locked out of a romance because of arbitrary gender restrictions may have caused some to 'turn off' and lose all interest in these characters. I particularly remember seeing complaints to that effect with ME3's Ashley (from those that wanted to romance her as FemShep), though there weren't a whole lot of them.

Regardless, I'm not too bothered if the character(s) I want isn't available. As I've said before, I think Dragon Age in general has been pretty good with the whole friendship vs. romance thing, unlike ME.

Typically I keep my romance with me for most of the game, except if I'm manipulating the approval bar, or a cdrtain character is meant to be in a quest, like Shale and the anvil.

I see it as leaving out characters I don't like rather than sticking to characters I do like. In DA:O this wasn't a problem as I found all of the characters likeable. In DA2 however, I don't think I could make it through a full game of Anders or Merrill or Fenris yapping in my ear. So Annoying! I tend to stick with Varric, Aveline, Isabela, Sebastian and Carver/Bethany.
