I like the scenes.  They may be ridiculous to watch in some (many?) ways, but it's nice to see the culmination of the romance for the character.  I don't know if I'm expressing that correctly, but there you have it.

What I wish they would change is having the sex scene be the final element of the relationship.  It doesn't always play out that way I guess, but more often than not the romance is structured in a way that puts the sex as the final development of the romance plot.  It would be nice to see the relationship continue to grow and develop after the sexytime.

Narrative climax. Not showing is the equivalent of developing a conflict between two characters and then have their final showdown and/or the resolution happen off screen.

Or so you could argue.

? Really? I was pretty aware they had sex in JE without needing to show the SM and their LI rolling around in bed.

I mean yeah I'm well aware an explicit sex scene can be shown to further develop the relationship but in BW's case I just rather they do that in dialogue like they usually do. Or something like the DA2 scenes where it FTB after a makeout session.

No U

I think cuddling in bed and talking would be a pretty good pay off without a sex scene.

Fade to black people.
It will always be the easiest and less silly option to take.

Dislike fade to black, know I finding myself outside door after Miranda fade to black in me3 bad for immersion and unrewarding. Sequences feel far more rewarding IMO.

Honestly I would prefer it if, instead of investing all kinds of time and energy into making one giant sex scene finale they took more opportunities for affectionate or romantic gestures THROUGHOUT the game. Hand holding, flirting, kisses on the cheek, even just more opportunities to talk with them. If they did that then the sex scene just fading to black without any fancy underwear or awkward animations wouldn't somehow feel unsatisfying I think.

Yass, this. But they'd have to be tactful about that. I'd be bothered if I saw too many of those kind of interactions during missions, because that would make the characters seem unprofessional. But yeah I'd definitely trade a softcore climax scene for more detail and downtime buildup scenes.

Right, I don't expect to have options to make out with my romance in the middle of a mission, but I mean just when you're around or in the middle of a non hostile town or at your keep, etc.

That reminds me of Origins.  How we could interact with them outside of camp via dialogue, and we could choose to kiss our LI.  I thought that was sweet.  I'd be happy having that and just little gestures and romantic touches over sex scenes, if I had to choose.

I at least am not claiming that Bioware *must* do anything, but I've read certain statements that can lead one to think that some of the game designers are opposed to this in principle because they consider it fetishistic, and thus somehow demeaning.  It sometimes seems like expressing sexual attraction to a character model that *is* sexually attractive somehow sullies and dirties any thought of producing a romance with a character like that.   It can come off that sexual attraction is never a valid basis for beginning a meaningful relationship, which is just bizarre.  *Many* meaningful relationships start in precisely this way.

It means that we're not going to make a racial companion romanceable solely on the basis of "people want to have a romance with someone of this race."

Note, also, that "sexual attraction" includes things beyond physical appearance.

Why, specifically, do you want to romance a Qunari?  Would it still be satisfying if we made a Qunari love interest but it happened that you weren't particularly attracted to the character model we happened to use for that particular Qunari?

I don't understand this criticism.

Sex hasn't been an endpoint for any of the Dragon Age romances. In several of them (Isabela, Morrigan, Zevran) you can't actually romance them until after you've had sex.

You could apply that to ME 1, but that ignores ME 2 and ME 3, even though we know it was planned as a trilogy.

I should have been clearer and said that I was referring to games in general rather than Dragon Age games specifically.

Although, if I remember the ME games correctly (and it's possible I don't because it's been a while), the "sex" scenes were the final element of the romance in each of the respective games.  While cuddling with Jack wasn't the end of her romance throughout the series, I thought it was the end of her content in the ME2 game specifically.

ME3 did also do a good job though.

Anyway, the point in the most general sense is that I like to see it when romances don't stop changing and growing after you have sex.

This is just a tiny nitpick, but as a Zevmancer I had to jump in -- you can actually have a full romance with Zevran without even so much as kissing him, and definitely without having sex with him...which I totally love, considering how he's very easily caricatured as incredibly sex-focused (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just a lovely unexpected slant on him as a character  ).

I'm not quite sure precisely where romance content lies on this spectrum, but it does have aspects that make it higher.  And I'm not just talking about scenes of "sexy time" and whatnot.  It can be direct interactions as part of the "core romance" (whether it be kissing/hugging or other sorts of interaction between the PC and the LI).  There could also be scenes that occur in other places in the game where we have a bias to have your romance come up and talk as opposed to another character because we feel it's fitting.  Just trying to illustrate that it may not just be as simple as "well make it fade to black."  If your LI is distraught, for example, I think it's a better experience if your PC has the option to comfort them in a more appropriate way than just "I stand here and talk to you."

Yeah, part of what I was hoping to see in the game was more small things- like the preference for an LI to talk, as mentioned above, or some small interactions that differ from the normal one (maybe holding hands? a hug? a kiss?). And the last one, being able to comfort them and not just talk to them, has to be the biggest one of all for me.

Not to undermine your point, but that's only really true for Isabela (Maybe Morrigan?) As far as I'm aware, sex with the Origins' romances is entirely optional. Though the game does assume you had sex with them.

I don't remember any assuming in Dragon Age besides maybe Morrigan in the epilogue if you romanced her?

I only remember imported romances in Mass Effect assuming Shepard slept with their love interest.

Yes, agree with that post.

Also i don't mind sex scenes if done good, fade to black isn't really my thing.

When Wynne chastises you for your chosen honey, she usually makes some reference to all the sex you're having.

I remember getting that without ever having the tent scene. I wish there was a dialogue option to say it isn't so, even if you're lying to her. :D Whether she believed you...

"We were having a really intense talk, that's all!"

"Oh, I bet it was intense."

Personally I would trade the "sex scene" for a love declaration and "maybe" a marriage proposal ( or something that said they wanted to be together forever), but meh it doesn't really matter to me!

I'd be all for the option to make a declaration of love, but I want no part of any weddings or marriages.

That's why I loved the Kaidan romance in ME3, it is very clear that THE scene with Kaidan was the last of many. It gave the whole thing a nice sense of fullness.

"Wake me up next time."

I've mentioned before how I adamantly believe that sex should not be treated as the culmination of a relationship because sex isn't the culmination of a relationship. It's a part of it, a milestone for it, but it isn't the end all be all and should never be treated as such.
