Well I meant first 100% party member and its not because I think lesbians are hot, a lesbian friend of mine got me into yuri cause I told her I had not played a game or saw an anime that had a romance in it that delivered for me (I'm a romantic) and she suggested Strawberry Panic and I watched it and it made me cry (I am not ashamed to admit sappy romance makes me cry) and I just think Yuri in anime at least does romance better

Anime does a lot of things great. Shame it has a generally bad reputation.

Plus, it's an RPG. If I want to play as a male who romances Sera, I should be able to. I play as males because I want to. I shouldn't be forced to play a different way.

Being in a rpg means you should be able to romance any character/LI you want with the gender you want ?

so you play a set way every single time? You really don't understand the definition of role playing if that's the case.

Not really, no. You absolutely should be able to control your own character, but you shouldn't be able to control other characters or how they respond to you.

No one is forcing you to play a different way. You still have options as a straight male. But Sera is a lesbian character and she shouldn't be forced into a relationship that does not make sense for her as such.

Um, JRPGs have pretty linear stories that have little imput from the player in terms of story yet are still RPGs.

Just out of curiosity, should you be able to play as qunari who everyone treats the same way they do as a human? Or an elf that is born as human nobility? Or a non elf-blooded human dalish?

That last one would be awesome, actually. I would love to be able to be an elf-blooded character.

I've never rivalmanced Merrill, but I never felt especially uncomfortable with rivaling Merrill. I don't think there's anything wrong with criticizing her use of blood magic. Even more, the turning point in the relationship with Merrill is the decision about whether to give her the Arulin'holm. Marethari actively asked Hawke not to give the blade to Merrill, my Hawke just decided to follow Marethari's wishes rather than Merrill's (as he already doubted her judgement, what with the blood magic and all that). I guess this could be different in the romance thought.

The issue with the Merrill rivalmance is that it comes across very much like one of those abusive relationships where one partner (in this case Hawke) tries to undermine the other. The fact that Hawke is actually ultimately right doesn't help the situation much. A standard non-romance rivalry comes across like Hawke is one of those concerned friends who thinks Marrill is acting like an idiot and is probably going to cause severe damage to yourself and others (which Merrill does).

You'll excuse my ignorance on the matter, but I know little to nothing about JRPG's. I guess that's why they are differentiated from western styles, no? Or are there some jRPG's that are more than just linear stories?

Just because someone chooses to keep something constant in their playthroughs (such as gender and sexuality), it doesn't mean they don't understand the concept of RPGs. I play almost exclusively as a male who romances males and takes the "'paragon" path because anything else feels forced and uncomfortable.

I did an ME1-3 playthrough as a renegade femshep who romanced Liara, got almost the entire squad killed on the suicide mission, didn't cure the genophage and by the end of it I felt depressed after making all these horrible choices that I would never make and basically being a first class ****** to everyone. I had to do another playthrough just to get it out of my head. I'm glad I got to see all the content but it felt more like a challenge I had to overcome than an enjoyable experience.

Well, they existed first so technically Western RPGs differ from them. :P

There are some that have branching story lines. But a lot really only branch in how you have your characters specced, like 'Are they a mage or a knight?' type thing.

My human Inquisitor will be elf-blooded.

B/c I say so, lol.  It's not going to matter in game (there won't be special dialog for it) but it's something that I can RP at least.

Yeah I headcanoned that hawke was one until a dlc kinda blew that out of the water. And if they brought in pickable backgrounds for the different races again it'd be an interesting choice.

Would be cool to see in game if we're offered special choices for being a Dalish Mage that might give some more insight to how Dalish clans view magic and spirits and it could be helpful to some like myself that find the whole mage templar thing very meh. Heck our Mage followers could offer some good insight as well maybe not from a Dalish perspective but from other angels especially Dorian being from Tevinter and all

That would be great; I'd love to learn more about the culture and magic of the People. What little we know about traditional Dalish mages, WoT reads: "Unlike other spellcasters, Dalish mages do not use any magic involving spirits, as they believe all spirits are dangerous." (page 104) I'm sure Solas and Dorian will provide other perspectives as well, especially given the latter's upbringing in the Black Chantry.

Please do not taunt people who are disappointed because a romance option is not available to them.  No matter how schadenfreude you may get, or how much you feel someone needs it because of whatever reason, lets not escalate things.

Just a small interjection from a German native speaker you aren't 'schadenfreude' but you are 'schadenfreudig'. 'Schadenfreude' is a noun, the corresponding adjective was never Germanized.

Yeah, kinda sucked that the only way to even headcanon it was imagining you were the result of an affair. Hopefully parentage isn't really brought up in Inquisition.

Trevelyan is supposed to be a noble, right?

It would have to be from an affair then.

I hope backgrounds aren't all that detailed out in DA:I.  It was different in DA2 b/c there was more focus on your family and beginnings in Lothering.

It's Solas. Soris is the Warden's cousin in the CE Origin ;).

But there's no way to tell if a human has an elf parent, is there? People treating your character as human wouldn't really break anything in that case.

I didn't think Merrill was wrong to pursue the restoration of the Eluvian, and Hawke's criticism (to me) rings a bit shallow to me when the character doesn't know anything about the plight of the People, or about their history and technology; it's not like the main character isn't willing to do something dangerous for a specific goal (the expedition into the Deep Roads, as a prime example, which was about hoping to find a fortune in a dangerous terrain filled with darkspawn). And it doesn't come to fruition because her research into the lore and the information that she had extrapolated from the shard produced an inert Eluvian, but I respect her for trying to help her people.

That's right...so it's pretty easy to RP as one.  It's something you might not ever bring up to anyone, even companions.
