So I'm actually thinking about the whole iron Bull thing in relationship to race gating the romance and what races would be "breakable", and it's reminding me of a situation in the Game of Thrones fandom and a debate going on there right now, as concerning the character of Grey Wormand his budding relationship with Missandei.
For those not in the know, Grey Worm is a eunuch; his genitals were cut off as a child. So a lot of people watching and even a few people in the show have wondered where this is going since they can't have sex. Which has a lot of other people countering that they're still perfectly capable of having a fulfilling romantic relationship, as people in the real world who've lost their genitals due to some accident or medical condition are capable of.
Let's say Iron Bull is a romance option; more than just a fling but a full blown love interest. Assuming people who perceive him as being too big in certain... areas, or too physically strong in general, to safely have sex with, say, an elf or a dwarf are right, there are other ways of being physically intimate with someone, and it's not like we're going to be getting explicit love scenes, anyway.
Just to be clear, I know that orientation as a choice exists across races. I don't know if it's necessarily the case for any particularly single playthrough with a particular Inquisitor. As David said, that aspect is something that is seen as less of a requirement in terms of being equal/fair.
I know that's instant buzzkill, but the worst thing I want is for you to be ultra enthusiastic because I wasn't clear on what I said, because that will only lead to ultra disappointment which I definitely do not want. Sorry!
I should probably defer a bit more since I don't know 100% of the details and I've probably already spent more time here than I should have today >.> (work work....)
Thanks so much! Your posts have gone a long way to explain where you (and some of the DA team) are coming from. Plus, for those that are interested in Sera, Lukas has been by a couple of times today talking about her as well. He had some good insights.
And in response to your last couple of words: Zug zug.
So we will be getting a chart?
I need that chart.

There's one thing to be said about the "neutral" orientation route (I dont want to call it playersexuality anymore). It's just more about people liking characters for their personalities. Yes, it's a "free for all" and yes it's unrealistic. Those are the negatives, I guess.
The only difference now is people have to consciously think about orientation in this game. It adds a complexity, but until I see the stories, I don't know if it was necessary. Will the stories be better? Maybe.
As just a gaming experience though, I think it was easier just basing our likes/unlikes on personality.
Curse you amazingly beautiful fanart for rubbing my face in what could have been. ![]()

I've been calling it the sexually ambiguous route myself, but I agree.

If you can only guess, there is nothing well informed about it.
It's a guess based on all the information we currently have and on BioWare's previous games.
What is your source for claiming that all romance options are on the Last Supper photograph?
BioWare have a history of letting us have flings with NPCs outside our 'crew' but they have never written a full romance with one. Could this be the game where that changes? Sure. But I'm basing this assumption on their past behaviour and the fact that there seem to be more than enough options in the Last Supper shot.
Why are we assuming an even gender split of LIs?
Because this is how things have worked in other recent BioWare games. And in almost every instance where it hasn't worked like that, the imbalance has been in the direction of having more female LIs than male ones. The only exception is Sebastian in DA2, and he's DLC and you can't sleep with him so there's no sex scene for the cinematic designers to worry about.
Let's say that there are three males, and three females. One female is confirmed as a lesbian- for balance, let's assume one is presumed as gay.
What, exactly, is blocking him from having options, in the plural?
Maybe nothing, but the existence of race-gating does change the equation.
For example: let's say that there are indeed six love interests. Iron Bull is the bisexual male, and Dorian is the gay one. However, Iron Bull won't sleep with elves. Ergo, any gay elf has only Dorian to romance.
You still have Cass
I had plans involving a few of my male Inquisitors to romance Sera though. I even had a chart(not joking, I really do).

"I can do that."

Good to know I'm not the only one >>

Good man .

That's a very fair point, but Iron Bull may simply prefer to be able to be a little rougher during sex, and not have to worry about injuring his partner, and as far as reasons to turn down a partner go, it's not a terribly shallow one. I've also known a couple tall guys who prefer taller girls because it's easier to dance with them, or give them a quick kiss.

I don't see what mentioning Cass has to do with filling any void Sera might've done. They're different people. Who happen to be women.
One exudes fun and probably a little criminality, the other has a more orderly personality. Being partial to one or the other shapes how you approach the whole game and world. If you felt like you wanted an Inquisitor with a similar personality as Sera, you'll probably always miss her as a love interest (as a male). No matter how many Cassandras you have around ![]()
Of course, she can still be a favored companion too. I'm just saying that's what's lost here. This idea of romancing your favorite companion. They've created a situation where people will romance "second favorites", but then have favorite companions blocked. I saw the same thing happen in ME and other games. Like some women wanted to romance Jack. She fit perfectly with their Femshep.
I need that chart.
I must have that chart.

And scribbles and Viv most likely.
I don't have a good feeling about this race-gated romance thing.
It's likely meant to to add an extra flavor of immersion to the game. But it doesn't seem necessary and it sounds like something that's going to spectacularly backfire. In fact, it may make some companions seem somewhat psuedo-racist...and I don't recall the last time that people saw that as a likeable quality in a character.
In concept its pretty unbalanced and predictable if in-game lore is anything to go by: Human and Elf PCs will most likely be the least gated (most options for romance) while the Qunari and Dwarf PCs may be the most gated (less options for romance). It just sounds like an arbitrary restriction that may make a decent Role-play part of the game less fun than it could have been.
Look, I hate sounding like a pessimist in regards to this awesome-looking game that I really want to play. But I've got to call it as it looks and this race-gated romance aspect honestly looks like it will suck.

These two will probably be bi tbh (if Cass is straight that is) so we can have a bi female companion and a bi NPC.

The irony of that scenario of course being that human/elf relationships are the only one with a strong stigma attached to them in universe. Dwarves in Orzamar may be somewhat racist, but it's a mild thing, and there's no sign that surface dwarves have any opposition towards relations with humans or elves. I'm sure a human or city elf with a qunari would raise a hell of a stink, but it seems to happen so rarely as to not be a major issue.
But elves and humans? There's a whole heap of stigma on that from both sides.

Ah, not sure about that. :/
