I think you underestimate how selfish a lot of DA players are!

Remember when Darkspawn Chronicles came out and what a fit fans threw when they learned that Alistair and Leliana were rumored to be an item in that universe? ("OMG, S/HE CHEATED ON ME!" Never mind that, in that universe, he only knew you for one afternoon before you died in the Joining, and Leliana never met you at all?) Remember how utterly despised Fenris and Isabela's "friends with benefits" relationship is in Act 3 of DAII, despite how they only get together if Hawke has romanced neither of them?

Many fans seem to have this perception that, by the time the game starts, romance-able companions should be with only them or spend their whole lives alone and celibate, even if they don't romance them in that playthrough/alternate universe.

Yeah my main issue with FenrisxIsabela was he could screw her with impunity but one night with my Hawke brought all the damn feels out, causing him to run and not mention it for 3 damn years. That **** didn't make any sense. I really rather avoid ridiculous scenarios like that.

I actually liked the Leliana and Alistair bit >_>

I also think it was likely because Liara was already there for a bisexual female companion option.

Maybe he was written as bi from the start and Ashley as straight, and they weren't comfortable including a bisexual male LI to the series until ME3?

I know, I'm taking the terribly boring answers, but it's honestly what I believe.  I can understand if others see it much differently though.  :)

I don't share your opinion, but it's something I never thought about. It's an interesting theory.

Hhahahahaha I had to double take this. At first I read it as "I appreciate that BioWare reads these, no matter how combative and/or ridiculous BioWare gets!" XD XD XD

At first I was pretty D:

I agree just wish they replied to my question

I think it might be (and that it just my theory) becuase there was already a bisexual squadmate (Liara).

Makes sense. Consider my curiosity squashed. Poor Ashley has only seen the light of day beyond ME in one playthrough and only far enough to get her bonus powers. I miss Kaidan too much to complete the game without him. He's always my LI (apart from once with Steve) and he's a tougher, more versatile squadmate. It doesn't help that her unique power is bugged and all but useless. It's a shame we had to choose between them because I really liked them both and I'm a big fan of Kimberly Brooks' VA work.

ETA: If she'd been available to a femshep, I might've kept her around more. I'm not really a Liara fan but for some reason, all my femsheps have to be gay. It's the way Jennifer Hale delivers the performance, not wish fulfilment as I'm a gay man.

I came to it after reading DG's comments about Anders, and how that character was always bisexual back in Awakening.  It makes me wonder if it applies to other characters the same way, even in the ME team.   That being said, while I don't agree with the "for inclusion" stance, I do see where you're coming from as well.

And thus the fine art of agreeing to disagree while finding merit in each other viewpoints is demonstrated quite nicely with our posts.  :D

It wouldn't for me since how would my character know it was going to happen? Now I may feel bad maybe but my Inquisitor wouldn't. Though getting in the way of someone else finding happiness has been something I've been doing for a long time with a lot of my games so maybe I'm just used to it by now ^_^

I guess I'm just too dramatic. I felt guilty doing romances in harvest moon with rivals too

Well, you are one of the person I enjoy talking more here :D.

Eh. I made a trilogy playthrough were a Colonist/SS Shepard lost every friends and loved ones. Ashley (his LI) was the first one on that path of sorrow.

Bwahaha I love woobie Colonist/SS Shep. I make him either jerk woobie or nice guy woobie holding the sorrow inside (in which case Shep's very death seeker attitude in ME3 fits perfecty. He's really had enough. Wasn't even allowed to die in peace).

Maybe, but they recorded Ashley romance dialogue for femshep and Kaidan romance dialogue for maleshep back in ME1. The sound files actually shipped with the game, IIRC. There weren't any writing differences between genders that I can remember, but it certainly appears as though both characters' sexual orientations weren't firmly determined until later in development.

Honestly, I didn't commit as much to ME as the DA series. I didn't play ME1 at all. I just did the choice comic thing for it and picked up from ME2. Then I played ME2 and ME3 only one time. I never got around to getting the Citadel DLC. It just didn't appeal to me as much as the DA series. But I will follow the release as it gets close to the next game and chances are pretty good I'll give it a shot.

Does anyone think the companions might romance one another if the protagonist doesn't pursue a romance with them, similar to Fenris and Isabela being together?

I hope if so, that they aren't romance options for us as well. I feel too bad breaking that up. I know my Inquisitor doesn't know that, but that is one of the times metagame knowledge hurts my experience. Which sucks because Garrus and Tali were my favorite LIs of each gender and I can't romance them anymore without feeling like a colossal jerk.

Yup. I don't generally do a completely tragic playthrough, but it was an interesting experience.

Honestly, I don't feel bad romancing someone knowing they'd hook up with someone else. I mean, they get me, they can't complain.  B)

It is to this day the 2 playthroughs I can play through ME3 and be...okay with the ending. It's not great...but it's fitting.

Yes they stop at Carth syndrome :P

Honestly though I tended to have those characters romance NPCs I didn't like that much anyway (*cough* Kaidan *cough*) I did it Steve and Miranda once then felt a douche.

Had no such regret about Kaidan.

But it would be nice if we could give our PC's some dead spouses/widows of their own even if they're only brought up in conversation a handful of times by the PC him/herself.

Well, for a more genuine answer, I just look at it as something that adds to the story in a certain way in each reality. I don't think it's totally realistic to have just non-LIs hook up and still include the content. There just aren't generally enough of them of varied genders and sexualities to make couples out of. Often they're not LIs because they're not dating anyone, for whatever reason. And if they hook up with someone else I think it just fans the "WHY NOT ME" fires for people that did think they should be LIs. So, if it's going to exist, I think it almost needs to be potential LIs.

I think the side couples adds a nice dimension to characters in alternate realities where I don't romance a specific character, so I like it being a thing. At the same time, though, I'm not going to avoid romancing someone if I think their content is going to add more value to my experience as my personal LI. I'm more alright with being selfish with fictional characters, is kind of where this is going. lol
