I have to say, as a straight female gamer, it fills me with anger (and I am not using hyperbole) to see a straight male gamer claim that Bioware hates them.

 

Let's take the Way Back machine for a second. Let's take a look at Baldur's Gate II...

 

Straight Male Gamer Romance Options: Aerie, Viconia, and Jaheria

Straight Female Gamer Romance Options: Anomen and half of a cut romance option with Haer'Dalis.

Gay Male Gamer Romance Options: Zero.

Lesbian Female Gamer Romance Options: Zero.

Pansexual/Asexual Gamer Romance Options: Uhhhh... zero.

 

There was so little regard for anything other than the straight male that there was NOTHING for gay and lesbian gamers. There was so little respect for the female romance options that mid-way through developing the game they decided to cut out Haer'Dalis' romance and they didn't even bother cutting the dialogue they had already programmed into the game.

 

So, I literally get angry when I hear the ST8 Male Gamer cry about being the poor little forgotten baby. Seriously, get over it.

It wouldn't really for lesbians and gays. Plus, and Aveline romance would've been far more bigger then Sebastian's .
I didn't honestly had a problem with it.

Maybe but....well, whatever. I just rather have Aveline than Merril. Never could get into Merril.

I don't remember any unfinished romance dialog with Haer'Dalis. I remember being angry that he romanced Aerie right in front of me after I read that he was a planned romance for PCs. I remember David then saying that he saw HD more likely to have a drunken one night stand with the PC rather than fall in love with her which crushed my heart even more.

He always started flirting with my PC and getting those one on one romance dialogue complete with romantical music swelling and then... "AERIE, MY LOVE~~" and never once acknowledges the PC again. Also, there was a mod in progress ages ago that was supposed to restore the rest of the dialogue, but it never was never released. I had to mend my broken heart with a Romance Kivan mod. *heart in eyes*

I just plainly think that making Cullen straight would be the most convenient path. Same reason I think they'll go for a 2/2/2 set up rather than anything else; it allows for a decent, if imperfect variation of sexualities, and is much, much less costly and resource-heavy than a 2/4/2 set-up, and the most balanced choice if they're not going for an all-bi set up anymore.

 

I know, I'm just playing. But that DA2 had me mad. If they should of allowed Aveline as an LI as well because then straight males would of got 3 LIs and straight females 3, equally balanced.

After straight men have been exclusively pandered to through the entire history of video games, and women practically ignored, even on Bioware's part on occasion, the one time the romance set up balance swings slightly in straight women's favor, by just one romance option, one smaller and with less scenes than the rest... and that is a messed up romance balance? Really?

 

(And yes, that would not have been equally balanced. It would have been balanced towards, and favoring, the straight players. Again.)

I was joking and I do feel straight players and gay players should get equal balance romances. DAI seems to have that balance and hopefully they go 2/4/2.

Bisexuals will always have more choices regardless of the system.

I think the only way it wont be 2/4/2 is if there's a weird balance thing where two characters split taking up a whole slot with race gating. For example;

In that case it would be like 2/3/2 with two choices being limited in availability. But I'm leaning towards 2/4/2.

That is what I figure too. The race gated options will be bi, but they will make up for it with other option. Humans might end up being able to romance anyone of the "right" gender with the exception of those they're gated against.

Like The Elder King said, bisexuals will always have the most options regardless by the very virtue of being open to both male and female romances. If there are the same number of each sexuality then it's as close to equal balance as you can get. And again, it's much less costly and easier on your resources. But really, I don't think there's any great crime in giving more options to the queer players than the straight ones. I don't really believe that straight characters need to automatically exist to balance out queer characters. I just think that from a gave developer viewpoint, you'd want to be as fair and ubiased as possible, you know? And at least make an effort to go for a certain balance.

It also depends on whether or not they are written as bisexuals or if they have a set gender preference outside of the PC romance.

For example, Isabela is clearly written as a bisexual while the other DAII romances have no expressed gender preference. I mean, Fenris hooks up with Isabela and had a relationship (though I hate to use that word) with men in the past, he never expresses interest in anyone other than Hawke and Isabela. Where Merrill and Anders have no mention of sexuality outside of Hawke.

Because it makes sense logistically to race gate the "special sized" romance interests so that they wouldn't have to animate for every player race and gender.

 

Also, Varric has said he doesn't like humans, so it just... fits?

 

And I don't have a quote, but it sounded like he was referring to race and gender gating as a fact, not a coy, vague tease.
