Still don't think that plays much of a factor when devs make an LI

Maybe not.  But I can hope.

Here I'll make you a deal. You all can have Cullen and Solas and just give me Varric. That's a fair trade right?

Is there enough Varric to go around?

And Leliana. They confirmed she isn't an option. :(

I thought that much was obvious?  And makes sense to me.  She had her chance.  Zevran is a special case because...Zevran, and even then if the warden romanced him he wasn't supposed to take Hawke up on that.

I ain't scared. They're selling these big old padlocks at the hardware store down the street and I got enough canned peaches to last me 'til next winter.

Winter...is coming.

My guesses:

Straight:

Blackwall/Solas

Cassandra

Bi:

Cullen

Iron Bull(Human and Qunari only)

Varric(Dwarf and Elf only)

Scribbles

Vivienne

Gay:

Dorian

Sera

I think 9 LIs is a bit too much

One of ours was an NPC with little relevance that only appeared in the last game, while theirs were continuing companions, so I still stand by my claim.

I'm using only ME3, in which case they aren't continuing companions. If I picked up ME3 and played it without playing the other two games, my female Shepard would end up with at most 1 male available while my male Shepard would end up with at most 2 males available.

Alas, not true.

Mass Effect did have Kaidan and Steve Cortez but.... they were only LI's in Mass Effect 3.

There was no same sex romance option for a male Shepard in Mass Effect 1 or 2 so it's not balanced. :(

We aren't counting ME1 or ME2. I said ME3, and was careful to phrase it that way.

There are two male characters that look like models Cullen and Dorian and that's why I think that one will be straight and one gay. Now I'm not saying that the other males aren't attractive even though it's not exactly my area of expertise. :)

So sad when it all comes down to quantity alone in people..... But I guess that is consumerism for you.

But why would you single out one game out of a trilogy with save imports. It seems unnecessarily restrictive. Even if someone plays ME3 first out of the trilogy, there are things like Genesis 2, save game editing, and simply buying the previous games later.

Mass Effect Genesis? you can have Kaidan And Garrus alive and romanced without playing either of the two previous games. as well as anyone added you would be interested in in Mass Effect 3.

Half of the people who played ME2 did it without imports. (or more than half not sure which). Wouldn't be surprising for similar numbers for ME3.

I'm probably going to romance nearly everyone at least once, unless it's like ME and something about the LIs rubs me the wrong way in comparison to one I find super endearing.

I'm one day to try Thane, but I rarely hear anything good about anybody but Garrus, male or female.

I didn't much care for the rivalmance, but I liked the irony or romancing Fenris to a mage, and when he caught a glimpse of his past in Hawke's bed.  I don't much like having to kill her keeper, but I like that Merril may have known my warden personally.  I don't much care for Anders acting like he walked off the set of a Lifetime Original Movie, but I like putting Hawke into the center of things.  I don't much like Sebastian demanding I execute someone, but there's storytelling potential in marrying a PC off for ambition.  I don't much like how Isabella isn't strongly tied into most of the game, despite being a large portion of why Act 2 happens, but romancing her means I don't have to do Merrill's final quest.

Wouldn't be surprising if most ME3 playthroughs were without imports which makes the romances in ME3 like 5 or 6?

More than enough. You've got to bring your own peaches though.

Au contraire! If I had my way every companion would be an LI.

I don't see why people would want to deny content that would make others happy. If you don't want to romance someone, then don't. If you do, well the option is there.

The tricky part would be whether or not the writers would be able to make each and every one a unique and interesting story but...I think it could be done successfully. I believe Bioware is capable of it. That doesn't mean they'll do it of course but...I believe they could pull it off successfully.

But they could have the options. They were written and added to the game. I'm not going to pretend two full romance plots didn't exist. I would EASILY trade my situation for that.

Agreed. The difference across the series is: Kaiden x2, Garrus x2, Thane x 1.5, Jacob x 1 means 5-6 different romance plots (not including hook-ups with Vega and Javik) for straight women compared to 2 for gay men. The only reason we were able to start new romances in ME3 was because we had to because we'd NEVER been given the option to start one before. Most of the relationships were carry over only except Kaiden/Ashley, Liara, Steve and Traynor. Every demo got at least one possible new romance.

What matters to me is that the content is potentially available. To me, having the option makes it a better deal. If you play ME3 by itself then it makes little sense and you wont get nearly as much out of it, generally. If you are playing the game to it's optimum potential, you have better romance content available as a straight female than a gay male.

But all I'm saying is that everyone should get equal options. That can be with the all bi system, or with offering everyone the same amount of LI choices. I don't think it's being particularly demanding.

Like I said before, I can see something like straight women getting more than 1 option but having Varric limited to just female dwarves and Cullen being available to everyone else.  It would definitely cause people to play dwarves more for sure in my opinion.

Because it takes away precious development time from, you know, the ACTUAL game?

His bio suggests he doesn't mind race.  Or gender.

It suggests it, but it doesn't actually say it. Saying that he'll sleep with anyone doesn't literally mean he'll sleep with absolutely anyone. IIRC his voice actor mention's Bull's love of women in his interview, it was specifically mentions that Bull tries to get a woman for Cole (which strikes me as a heteronormative response to a probably asexual spirit). He could just as easily not be an LI (we've had companions that were celibate before our PC, and characters who embraced a monogamous lifestyle for our PC...what's wrong with one promiscuous person not actually being interested?)

I don't know, I think it's likely that Bull will end up a bi romance. But assume too much and we'll end up getting burned.

Romance is part of the actual game.

A lot of people play the game partly for the romance, which is not better or worse than playing for the combat.

Ditto.  I've seen a few people say they want Character X to be of Persuasion Y to fill Slot Z, and I'm like, "Who said there were slots?  Did the devs say that sat down and went 2/2/2 or 2/4/2, and filled in the gaps from there?"  Shouldn't one hope for MORE romances, not less, or a set amount?

So was Cole being unavailable, but you listed him. :P

I'm still sad on that. I love Leliana, and her new appearance is absolutely gorgeous.

The romance subplots are, and will forever remain, OPTIONAL content. People should just be happy that it has obviously been allocaded a far bigger budget this time around.

I played ME3 first without importing a save or using the Genesis 2 comic and the options you had were your pre-service history (space/colonist/earthborn), psychological profile (war hero/sole survivor/ruthless) and who you saved on Virmire. Every new player had a romance option available to them.

Does it really take away that much time though?

Dragon Age is equal parts role playing and combat. The romances and character interactions are part of the role playing aspect which is part of the actual game.

Romances seem to be something that a huge amount of Bioware fans enjoy immensely, so I really see them just as much a part of the game as anything else. There are people who don't care about them as much of course, which is why they are optional, but I don't think it would be a smart move to play them down with how extremely popular of a feature it is. :3

That said, I would be just as happy with 6 romances as I would with 9, as long as they try their best at equal representation with it ~

I noticed the "bad women" comment about Iron Bull and Cole, also. It makes me wonder if he's going to be more "Zevran bi", in that he talks more about women, if he isn't straight.

Sigh...are we still discussing ME3 romance options, AGAIN ?

I'm not against going on topic on occasion but this whole "gay guys have it better in ME3 - no it's the straight women" thing already came and went....several times, can we please give it a rest ?
