Creating content to be consumed by the maximum number of people possible is essentially the number one reason people create games, heck this is true for any medium. Music, film, books.

I think the point is that, while creating content for mass appeal is important, for a writer, it might not be the driving force for their writing.  I'm not a writer, but if I were, I imagine I would much prefer to just write what I think makes sense to me instead of trying to think about what would have the most mass appeal.  I think the writers write romances because they like to write romances.

The real question is, would "more" people really be happy if they scrapped romances to focus on a larger crafting system, or a few more main plot quests. Romances are extremely popular and I think it might not be totally accurate to assume they would be appealing to the majority just because they were making more "non-optional" content. Optional content can still be a major motivator for purchase and a major contributor to player enjoyment.

So Dorian has been confirmed as the gay male romance option, can't say I didn't see it coming but good to have it set in stone. Bioware have confirmed the two same-sex romances consecutively, now I'm assuming both Cass and Cullen are straight. Next I'm expecting the two bisexual confirmations as well as information about race-gating.

Straight

Cassandra and Cullen - open to all races

Gay

Sera and Dorian - open to all races

Straight - Race-gated

Solas - Female Elf or Human

Varric - Female Dwarf

Bi-sexual - Race-gated

Vivienne - Male or Female Human

Iron Bull - Male or Female Qunari (maybe Dwarf)

That's what I do.  Some write for broad appeal, ie, money, others write for the story.

I like these odds.

I agree, following this logic I think that the romances are an optional, fairly small part of the game because the writers don't place their importance over a good plot, interesting characters and various in world conflicts and issues.

I think it's an insult to call the writers of every game that doesn't have romance content robot drones.

I was talking about new players to the series who didn't have imports or use the comic. If a player picked up the game without knowing anything about the characters but romance was important to her, she still had the option to save Kaidan, even if she didn't know who the hell he was. No imports or interactive comic necessary. No new player had to go without is what I said. You're saying a woman could have ended up with zero options. That is only true if she chose to give herself zero options. I don't want to get into the argument entitled "Straight Women vs. Gay Men: Who has it worse?" because both have had it bad but... no actually I'm just gonna stop right there.

You do realize the game didn't give you a warning you were killing an LI don't you? I mean I have a feeling that's somehow going over your head. M/F, F/F, and MM all had LIs that would be available REGARDLESS of who you said Shep saved at virmire. F/M did not. They didn't have to go without no. But realizing 10+ hours later that you killed your only love interest isn't helpful. Everyone did not know who the romance options were. The human male is a good guess yes but no the average player doesn't automatically know Kaidan's the only LI they'll get in the game and they should save him over Ashley unless they want to be single.

I find it highly unlikely that some race/sexuality/gender combinations will have only one option.

I imagine that everyone will get two options and then the race-gated romances are above and beyond that.

Actually, no. One marketing maxim is "If everyone likes a new product, then it will fail." The meaning, of course, being that no one loves it. Designing something that's blandly pleasing for everyone exposed to it is not a recipe for success; romances are somewhat niche, but they're a niche that excites a great deal of passion and has clamped onto a decent chunk of returning fanbase.

Hard to say. These forums would have you think that romance is the most important part of the game (and for some it is) but these boards are only a small, extremely vocal part of the fanbase.

I think there would be a bigger outcry if they were to remove everything but the romance content than if they were to keep everything else and drop the romances, but I really don't know.

What, remove the entire game? That's... not exactly a fair comparison. Removing romances would lead to a far larger outcry than removing, say, crafting.

Any media created with the primary goal of mass consumption over artistic expression is probably not something worth consuming. There is no videogame-by-numbers cheat sheet that leads to anything good. One that leads to sales? Absolutely. That doesn't make it a good game however.

People keep saying this, but how is that even remotely true? There is a romance thread, where people talk romances, and there is a character thread, where people sometimes bring up that character's romance, but that's about it.

Sometimes in Scuttlebut there's a thinly veiled troll thread about romances, or a topic about something a dev just said about romance content, but I don't see how anyone would confuse that with "most important".

I'm sure there would be more complaints if they removed everything but the romance content. That's kind of an absurd comparison. Nobody is suggesting everything but the romance content be removed. What I'm suggesting is that Bioware likely keeps including romance content because they believe the balance they've struck is what has the most mass appeal for them, rather than focusing only on mandatory quests.

It'd allow each set up to have these romances -

Male Human - 4 options (Cassandra, Vivienne, Solas or Dorian)

Female Human - 4 options (Cullen, Vivienne, Solas or Sera)

Male Elf - 3 options (Cassandra, Solas or Dorian)

Female Elf - 3 options (Cullen, Solas or Sera)

Male Dwarf - 3 options (Cassandra, Dorian or IB?)

Female Dwarf - 4 options (Cullen, Sera, Varric or IB?)

Male Qunari - 3 options (Cassandra, Dorian or IB)

Female Qunari - 3 options (Cullen, Sera or IB)

Looking at this I can now imagine Solas being an option for both female and males but still elf or human only.

It's probably because the speed that romance threads grow compared to everything else.

Yes it is. Some people would actually be very happy were Bioware to start making dating sims. The original conversation was about increasing romance content at the expense of other aspects of the game, I just took it to it's eventual conclusion.

Okay, but I don't see how that suggests that it's the most popular topic vs. just super popular with a subset of fans. I'm not disagreeing with you that this might be the reason, just that it's not a reason I really get.

Who would be very happy? Let's have 6 examples of posters here who said that.

If someone said "I want more crafting" it doesn't mean they want Bioware to ship then lego blocks.

We must be frequenting different forums then, because 8/10 threads I read through tend to be dominated by romance discussion.

Yeah, but this still has some players only getting one option:  Straight male elves, lesbian elves, straight male dwarves, straight male qunari, straight female qunari

Like I said, I imagine that all race/gender/sexuality combinations will get two options.  Beyond that, it will probably not be even.
