You obviously haven't seen the Tumblr(s)..?
http://fuckyeahvarric.tumblr.com/
http://officialvarri...ras.tumblr.com/
http://varricxtethras.tumblr.com

Not all Varric fans frequent these particular forum spaces.

I also like to think that most of the "crazy fangirl" bunch kinda "cooled down" after the DA2 disappointment.

*snip*

Spoiler

I was at the romance in video games panel at PAX East. One of the panelists sitting next to Laidlaw was a huge Varric fan. At the start of the panel she ripped off her jacket to reveal a Varric tee-shirt underneath and cried "VARRIC FOR LI" the room went wild. Laidlaw, looking very sheepish, said "you can romance Cullen"... almost dead silence in response.

So what you see in this forum isn't necessarily reflective of all Dragon Age fans.

I think it's a damn good reflection on the fanbase. Most of the fanart is linked here, discussions and fanfic is also linked here. Three tumblr's don't reflect a fanbase, imo. Also, people like bandwagoning in panels :P I'd have cheered, too, even if I am neutral on Varric being an LI.

It kinda bugs me that there are so many Bioware romances with exes, dead or alive, YET, when everyone starts talking about Bianca aka the "implied dead" ex,
"OH VARRIC PROBABLY STILL LOVES HER KTHXBAI".

I see no reason for them to bring back Varric and NOT make him a romance.

Everyone else who were brought back in the sequels (Garrus, Tali, Anders and Cullen) came back as romances.

Sure, the Varric fandom may be weird but just because we're not dedicating our entire life (as in the 24/7 posting updates kind) to our favourite dwarf doesn't make anyone of us any less of a fan.

Yeah, because they aren't mentioned nearly as much as Bianca is.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm not saying I hate Varric fans or something negative you might misinterpret it as here, I'm just disagreeing with it. It really does seem like the Varric fanbase has died down significantly and though you still have the fanbase with lovely, devoted fans... it was why I asked in the first place. I was really confused as to why the demand was really lukewarm.

I always thought it'd be highly likely he got an LI until I saw the quotes you guys linked, which is a shame. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing a ton of Varric LI requests and general squeeing. I guess it's somewhat unusual to see a character with such a fanbase and such an attractive personality not be able to get over their LI and thus be supposedly, "un-romanceable."

Gotta say while I've been kind of over Varric for a while (in hopes to have him as an LI at least) I agree with Former_Fiend Varric being obsessed with Bianca for at least ten years now isn't healthy and I'm a little worried for the guy. Course I never thought the whole 'holding a torch for years' thing was ever vary romantic just kind of unhealthy. Course I know absolutely nothing about Bianca the person just the crossbow so maybe it makes sense for him to be still holding a torch for her I"m not sure, just from where I'm standing it's coming off as kind of unhealthy. (And no I don't mean that he should be an LI and be over Bianca, just that he should move on even if he isn't an LI.) See this is what Bioware does to me, makes me worry about the mental health of a fictional character like they're a friend I've known for years^^;

I'm not so sure he is obessessed. Were he obessessed he would be pinning over it all the time, similar to Anders and mages, Merrill and mirrors or Fenris and magisters.

I think it's more on the lines of not being able to move on. He went his separate ways with Bianca, but I guess he never truly managed to put her memory to rest.

I think I don't squee and cry for Varric as an LI because I'm terrified of being disappointed because I want it that much, does that make sense? I'm trying to not fall off a certain ledge into a potential pit of neverending despair...yes, I'm protecting my heart...

I think that Cullen and Cassandra's sexualities haven't been revealed because they weren't really planning to reveal ANY sexualities this early necessarily.

Sera was revealed not by the devs or the marketing team, but by a reality show. From Gaider's response, it sounds like they knew that it would be on the show but not necessarily when the episode would air.

Dorian's reveal was less about his sexuality in terms of romance and more about how his sexuality shapes his character. It was 'revealed' for a different purpose and then confirmed via social media.

The marketing department hasn't really done much to discuss sexuality at all beyond this. I think it was just a coincidence that it happened to be the two gay characters who were 'revealed' at this point. I suspect that there will be either an official reveal with all of the options announced together or they will change up their strategy now that some have been prematurely released and start announcing them throughout the summer in different aspects.

I really wouldn't be surprised if the bisexual options get revealed at Gaymer X, though, since it's so relevant. If that's the case, they might want to just go ahead and announce them all so that there won't be this continued murmuring about neglecting straight characters.

Sure it would end the speculation of their orientation but people would still talk to about them just as they do any character so that point is a bit irrelevant isn't it?

Well, ofcourse they would keep talking about it. But the speculation would stop.

Fair enough obsessed was the wrong word but the first one that came to mind while I was writing that post. I still don't think its very healthy for him though to still be unable to move on.

Mark Darriah revealed it on the show, he's a dev. The person who runs the show is part of their marketing team.

Heroes of Cosplay is run by* Jessica Marizen, a BioWare employee. Neither EA nor BioWare owns or runs it.

* I should probably say 'stars' because it's owned by Syfy.

I don't think. Bioware runs HoC. Jessica is a Bioware staffer who is also on the show as a 'hero', but I don't think that Bioware runs anything with HoC.

Ah, so it is a second job for her. Okay.

Well then, Jessica Merizan and Mark Darrah: Why you announce Sera and leave the rest of the LIs hanging?

Technically they didn't, the person cosplaying Sera did

Mark calls her a "romance character for female Inquisitors only."

Isn't the basis of the storyline that she's playing a character she knows nothing about and that she's never done that before?

Mark confirms it, and that had to be approved before the show. Gaider says as much.

They could release the LI's on the back of a Campbell's soup can at this point, I don't really care how I get the information.

Because no one was cosplaying them.

Honestly, it's probably some marketing strategy that makes sense behind the smoke and curtains. We just have to hang on for the ride.

Obviously, Bioware knew that they were going to announce it on the show because the devs were on film saying the words. However, some of the devs, at least, had no idea when that announcement would be made. It's unclear if the marketing team knew but just didn't inform the devs (which makes sense given that they've highlighted that those are separate departments altogether) or if SyFy aired the episode earlier than they thought they would. It's likely the first one.

That being said, it's not really an official announcement in the same way that Dorian's was. This was a secondary media source releasing information obtained from the devs. To me, it's more like the first time that Solas was announced.

I'll be happy if Varric isn't one of the LIs.

I get that he has a lot of fans. But some companions, even popular ones, should not be romance options for the player character. I think Varric's arc will be more interesting if there is an actual Bianca (and not just a crossbow) that he's in love with.

Well, the devs confirmed Sera was gay later over social media, like Dorian, so she did get the same level of confirmation after.

I got a chance to see the rerun last week.  In the show, Mike Laidlaw himself says to the cosplayer, "Sera is a romance that will be available for the female Inquisitor only.  You will have a say in her character design."  You should have seen the way the lady's eyes just lit up.

That kiss between her and Jessica (who was doing her stunning cosplay as Morrigan,) by the way, was utterly spur of the moment.  When their group was announced, the lady playing Sera abruptly bounces off stage.  She comes back a few seconds later, lays that kiss on Jessica (who was completely shocked) and bounces away to the other side of the stage.  This was unrehearsed and unplanned.  Like the professional she is, Jessica (without breaking character) says, "That was naughty, Sera."  You can tell that Jessica has spent a lot of time with Claudia Black, because the voice was damn near spot on.   Anyhow, the cosplayer that brought Sera to life did an amazing job, with that puckish grin on her face.

Later, when asked why she did that, she said (paraphrasing,) "When you get up there, you only have about 30 seconds to present yourself and make your character's personality known.  With everything I knew about her, and with her being into the ladies, I figured she'd be the type to steal a kiss from Morrigan."

I do want him as an LI, but no matter what I expect his story arc to be great. I would be cheering if he was reunited with a lost love. That could make up for it, if they had it planned and it was why he couldn't be romancable. (and it would work out much better than Joker did). lol.

I admit, I'm guilty as charged. I find the story arc of Varric reuniting with Bianca much more interesting then an romance. I mean, no offense to those that want to romance him, but I just like those kinds of storylines better.

I could live with that... I could also see some snarky comments like "finally wrote a dwarven romance, it just didn't involve your character". haha.

But, until then, I am in full support of some Varric lovin'.  B)

I remember seeing at some point that a dev had mentioned Bianca's story "wasn't done" and they've talked a lot about Varric's love for Bianca, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if Varric and Bianca reunite. This may be the reason they brought him back.

I'm not interested in Varric romantically, so this plot would be interesting to me. I can totally sympathize with people who are interested in Varric not thinking it's as much so. I wouldn't be thrilled if it had turned out that Dorian's plot arc involved getting him back together with his lost elven slave boyfriend, or something, for example. What's more appealing clearly has a lot to do with how you view Varric.
