I don't think the media deserve flogging in this particular case, tbh. They are just repeating what they were told by BioWare as part of the game marketing effort, after all.

What did BW say besides Gaider mentioning that Dorian was the first gay male companion he's wrote?

It's going to get worse once they announce them all.

While this is true, I personally want The Chart revealed because I'm not really going to be able to relax about the game until I know if my female dwarf can romance someone I'm actually interested in. If she can't. oh well. I'll wail and rend my garments for ten minutes or so and then calm down and look forward to everything else.

However, I'd really rather get the wailing and garment-rending out of the way well before the actual game arrives. I do not want to find out that my first Inquisitor is going to be Forever Alone by attempting to hit on Varric, Iron Bull and Blackwall and finding out that none of them are love interests or they're race-gated against dwarves.

I think this is probably true for a lot of people. Inevitably there will be disappointment as well a squee when the love interests are revealed, and I think it's better to get some of it out of the way before the game is released.

I think the reaction to Dorian is mostly because adding a gay male is seen as ballsier than adding a lesbian. There was a lesbian character in a Bioware game (Juhani) ages before Cortez was added and he isn't even a companion. ME3 had bisexual female content in two games before adding any same sex male content. If you want to add a gay character, lesbians are the "safer" choice. Of course, lesbians are still underrepresented, by far, and I think Sera deserves praise. I'm just not shocked by the reaction to Dorian.

Yeah, sadly.

Ofc lesbians are the 'safer' choice since they've always been titillation for some straight dudes and not an actual representation.

Given some of the complaints about Sera, this hopefully doesn't apply to her.

Is there a need to say more than that?

http://uk.ign.com/ar...-fully-gay-male

the quote is there, and the article mentions earlier instances of homosexual characters in BW games, noting the difference is in Dorian being a party member. Nothing they wrote there strikes me as wrong or of "goddamn media" variety.

Doubtful. Bioware and especially the DA team, has been very good and respectful about this matter.

We don't talk about the Mass Effect team.

The quotes are from Dorian's profile on the DAI site, BW didn't made any announcement, the gaming news sites did all on their own.

Call me when there's a lesbian character who looks like Rachel Maddow or Lea DeLaria, and I'll give the people putting lesbians in games and television shows a cookie.

I think a part of this is that they're afraid people will say they're stereotyping. I think there's some measure of effort to make the lesbians feminine and gay men especially masculine just so nobody can say they were perpetuating stereotypes. From what we know about Dorian, I've already seen multiple people calling him a gay stereotype. I don't agree with them doing this at all, but I see where it comes from.

I'm not saying lesbians aren't very often used for titillation, though. They definitely are. Although, most people in media are in line with beauty standards, when you get down to it. It's more in the way the sexualization is often presented that makes it a problem, I think.

I said "the media are repeating what they were told by BioWare as part of the game marketing effort". I don't see why this should exclude reporting recent info published by a member of BioWare staff, on BioWare's web site about their upcoming game. And i don't think we'll need to argue that doling out these character reveals is part of the marketing effort?

The line about Dorian being the first gay character etc caught eyes and made the news. The reports aren't inaccurate. Is there really anything here that warrants complaints?

I have no problem with Sera's appearance, but I'm saying that the majority of lesbian fictional characters on television and movies don't look or act like real life lesbians, and I'll consider it ground breaking and inspiring when they do include characters who look like women I know and look up to who are lesbians.

The medias are being very selective, I didn't see as many articles about Sera being gay, it's just that because now it's a gay man.

The news sites made the choice to pile articles upon articles on the fact that Dorian is gay (they also made it look like it was the focus were it was just one aspect of the character, that's misinformation), they are the one to blame.

Dorian seems like an interesting character. I don't care for him being gay. I'd rather have a well written gay/lesbian character than a bland straight or bisexual character. Their personality, demeanor, and actions are what define them.

The hair, while less styled, is of a similar length. I don't know what Lea DeLaria looks like, but her general build is at least in the same range as Rachel Maddow. I don't personally remember how far either woman's makeup went, but Sera's never struck me as excessive. Sera's outfit doesn't appear to be stereotypically feminine at all.

I think part of the reason is Sera's reveal as a lesbian so early was unintentional or at least not expected by all of Bioware, whereas they published the comments about Dorian being gay on the Dragon Age website.

Well, one looks about thirty years younger and is significantly more athletic than the other, so I don't know if that really counts for determining lesbian characteristics.

Gonna be a little non PC here, people want the lesbian option to be conventional unattractive?

Just because a character is not stereotypically feminine, doesn't mean she's automatically anywhere near what society calls "butch."

It doesn't even *have* to be butch lesbians.  Give me women of color with dreadlocks and piercings, fat women with tattoos, anything other than the ultra femme lesbians we see right now.

Right, but the post said Lea and Rachel.  And people responded that Sera did (without specifying which one).  If you think she looks like Rachel Maddow, that's fine.  I can maybe be convinced of this.  But she does not look like Lea DeLaria.

I think what they want is for there to be lesbian characters, not necessarily romance options but just characters, in the game who are unattractive as a demonstration that they aren't there as titillation for male gamers.

Least that seems to be what's going on.
