Yes but that doesn't have to be the only option. It gets just as typical and trite as the fairybook romances when done often enough.

I doubt Sera will be a tragic romance. They haven't done any game where all the romances were tragic. Unless you consider the ending to that one game we shouldn't talk about as making all the romances tragic.

True. They do all entail the PC playing therapist though. (which I guess isn't fair of me since I'm using them interchangeably and they're not).

Yeah let's not get into that again XD ME brings out my nasty mode apparently ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

As much as I still want Blackwall for a romance I have to agree with you, I've already got a bad feeling with Cullen's romance cause of the lyruim thing though I'm split 50/50 on weather or not it would even come up but still on the chance that it does there should be a stable healthy happy LI to balance it out. Even if it means giving up that wonderful beard of Blackwall's. TT~TT

Cullen's just going to ask you to do a line of lyrium with him, that's all. He could quit any time. He just doesn't want to quit.

Yeah if they can keep Cullen rather light and avoid dwelling into the "welp he's slowly going to lose his memory and start drooling all over himself while suffering withdrawal symptoms!" at bay for the game then yeah go go Blackwall LI. I'd even take a jerk LI that had confidence in himself and supported the PC and took care of their own business on their own without the "Oh I needz your halp!" bits. (Like in SWTOR how some characters would tell you about their personal quests and then go and handle their own business. And come back and maybe tell you how it went. Nice side effect of them not being at the PC's beckon and call *even if it'd be annoying at times*). Of course there'd be some quests they'd ask you to go with them on but it wouldn't be a "I can't do this without you dave!" scenario.

Edit: This is all referring to male LIs for the female PC

/shrug I'm probably explaining myself terribly.

Mmnhm, mmhmm, and how does that make you feel?

What? I'm brushing up on my therapist skills before the game release.  ;)

So what do you guys think the romantic arcs for the characters we know (or you suspect) will be like? Who do you think could be tragic/broody/etc and who do you think will be light hearted/happy endings?

Makes me feel lonely and for my PC to wish someone would care enough to listen to them complain for conversations on end. XD

Yeah if there's anything I loved about my evil/renedouche playthroughs it was playing a character who just didn't give a damn about their personal drama. So...freeing and refreshing. Even if I ended up with most of them ditching me in DAO. I just wish there was more "Personal drama overwith?" dialogue options though "I just needed your grey warden expertise not a diatribe on your strange personal habits." makes me giggle everytime.

Leliana: Dark and broody.
Sera: Light and happy and zany.
Cassandra: Intense and romantic.
Vivienne: A struggle of wills to see if you're her equal.

Cullen's just going to ask you to do a line of lyrium with him, that's all. He could quit any time. He just doesn't want to quit.

Cullen will love you and be totally devoted to you because you're his supplier.

This will still feel less exploitative than some other BioWare romances.

Yeah I've heard that many a time before actually which is why it worries me quite a bit, rather not be keeping him with a fix to keep him going. I do know you're joking this is just one of the things I've had experience with so yeah I'm a buzz kill^^;

While Bioware is within their full rights to do an addict angle on Cullen I really hope they do not. Never played SWTOR so I'll take your word on that which sounds pretty cool (though I do love to help companions with their missions usually). I think I get what you're saying, but then again I'm running low on sleep while trying to get the house clean in between checking up on the threads so my comprehension skills are limited at the moment. I understand that some people would be really bugged by a tragic dying lover romance and I get that I'd be the same way if they pull a whole needing to supply Cullen with lyruim thing to keep him sane a little longer. If I have to give up Blackwall so there will be a stable romance I will sadly do so but it won't stop me from admiring him from afar and wishing I could run my fingers through his wondrous beard^^;

I actually like personal quests, usually. I mean, I did a fetch quest to return someone's pants in DA2, so their stuff seems impressively important, in comparison. lol

I think Sera's romance may be a happy one. Her character doesn't seem to have much baggage yet, aside from the kind she was born with being an elf. I just see her personality as more of the type where she's not going to put her problems on you though, and just want to have fun. More broody/tragic... I don't know of any confirmed options yet that I would think fit that, but if Iron Bull or Blackwall get confirmed, I would place my bets on those. They both have some problems when it comes to trying to romance them.

But really just once. One time. I want an f/m romance where you're not the LI's therapist in dragon age. One time and I'll be content. D:

Echoing this.

Aside from the Bianca thing, I hope Varric would be a relatively sane LI without too much baggage.

I could actually see Sera getting darker mid-game or late-game. In the interview they talked about how her beliefs were "untested" and I feel like she's going to go through a lot more disappointment than characters that already know the world just blows.

But hasn't Gaider gone on record saying that he thinks happy, healthy relationships are boring?

And since he's also not the only writer, I've seen him admit that he's not even the most brutal in the "tragic romance writing" department. That he's actually had to pull other writers back and ask them to tone down the tragedy/drama/heartbreak they wanted to inflict on a player romance because even he thought it was too much. (He made that post in the forums a long time ago and I can't find it.)

I personally have my guard up. I fear there's going to be some tragedy somewhere, because at this point it wouldn't be a BioWare romance without one. O_O;

Then watch mid way through the game during a romantic scene Varric accidentally calls you Bianca and realizes he's not over her and breaks it off so he can go back to his crossbow and beg for her forgiveness for straying from her.

Sera is written by Luke, though. So what Mr.Gaider thinks of game romances doesn't necessarily need to apply.

Cullen...could go either way depending on how the Lyrium issue is handled. I'm hoping it's more of the light hearted happy ending though. But considering the beginning of the game it'd probably be rocky.

Solas if he's an option would hopefully be a meeting of two equals who mutually respect and support one another. (this is my absolute best case scenario. I'm shoving my fingers in my ears for the worst ;-; )

Vivienne seems like a defrosting the ice queen type. So...not sure about that. Or Sera and Dorian for that matter.

Iron Bull if he's a romance sounds fun...but the Qunari agent thing is probably going to lead to some drama.

Cullen will love you and be totally devoted to you because you're his supplier.

Agreed.

Oh you do both. Let's take Revel for example. He has a quest chain. You help him out in some parts of it, on the other he'll tell you on the ship he has things he needs to do alone, he goes does them, come back you can ask him how it went and he'll respond. But yeah suppling Cullen with lyrium to help his sanity is =/ XD no fault in that :3 if you like the beard you like it. (Though I thought the beard looked much better in the concept art).

I could see Iron Bull's romance being super drama filled, if it's a thing, because choosing a romance with you would be basically siding against his faith.

That sounds like a niffy mechanic to have in a game though again I usually like being there for my companions quest (aside from helping Anders with the bomb or Isabela with the ship though I still do them every time) Please please please no drug story line with Cullen it just will feel so icky for me and hit way to close to home. Though I haven't really looked for interviews on the characters I mostly stay here for new info like that since people seem to catch wind of things like that pretty quickly ^^. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't that concept art of Blackwall in the rain tearing off that necklace that won me over  :wub:

David is interesting because he both appreciates unhappy and tormented romances but is kind of a soft touch. You get the feeling he's this dark chocolate shell of cynicism with a gooey, lovey center.

He likes to take you to dark places but give you happy endings.

Anders in DA II was Jennifer, who also did that messed up but awesome Branka/Hespith/Broodmother thing, and I have to say if she were still writing Cassandra, I'd be a bit frightened.

I don't think Sera will get dark or tragic. There may be a low point in her character arc, but it will be part of a larger growing up and maturing plot and not just breaking the funloving character.

... Why do I suddenly crave sweets?

I think Evangeline and Rhys are happy enough. Of course, the story ends at their relationship just beginning. But it shows he can write that way at least. I don't see why these characters should trail off that way, but somehow player characters need more drama. That's a little weird.

Yeah I wouldn't mind the usual help companion with major deal quests but once in a while I'd like it if they could show they do some things on their own. No more facepalm moments like Leliana deciding to bend to whatever decision you made regarding Marjoline would be fantastic. (or companions twiddling their thumbs til you did their personal quests that they need done immediately). Maybe it should've been something she did on her own but if you hardened her beforehand she killed Marjoline, if you softened her she didn't. Maybe you have a conversation about forgiveness and if you manage to successfully convince her (and no not just a magical persuade button) to your POV that's what she leans towards. And the hardening/softening would've happened over the game depending on what you said to her and how you treated her but it wouldn't have been as simple as the "Lol you like being a bard."

But yeah Cullen =/

That concept art did look really good XD

This is what I'm guessing;

Cassandra - Heterosexual (Could be switched with Vivienne.)

Solas - Heterosexual (Could be switched with Cullen.)

Iron Bull - Bisexual

Cullen - Bisexual (Could be switched with Solas.)

Vivienne - Bisexual (Could be switched with Cassandra.)

Scribbles - Bisexual

Dorian - Homosexual

Sera - Homosexual

I wouldn't complain with that line-up.

I'm not convinced that there will be 8 yet though.
