And that is what I fear I don't want to be stuck with only one option regardless of what race/gender combo I am playing :(

This worries me too. The restrictions just seem to be piling on. I'm half-expecting class to enter into it too. I really don't want to be in a position where I'm forced to chose between my preferred sex/class/race combo and being able to romance someone I find appealing because there's no longer a selection of options available. I hope it's not the case that qunari characters get the short end of the romance stick, but I have a not-so pleasant feeling that may be the case.

I have a question: On the first playthrough who are you going to romance first?

Ideally, Cass with my fem-qunquisitor. Failing that as an option, Sera. Failing that... bite the bullet and re-roll human and go down the list again.

Sera. Still haven't been able to decide whether I should play dwarf or elf first though.

Probably elf, since Sera may be race-gated too.

Tough choice, but I would have to go with Cassandra. I love tomboys, what can I say? I wonder if love triangles will happen this time around...

With racial restriction possibly involved in any given romance, I... just don't know anymore.  #GiveUsTheChart

Who I would like to romance?  m!Elf or m!Dwarf/Dorian, m!Qunari/Iron Bull, f!Elf or f!Qunari/Sera.

It's either

  • Dorian because I can't deny the mustache.
  • Iron-Bull because I've got to ride the bull at least once. Or...
  • Cullen because it's Cullen. I'm not sure if I liked him in previous games but naughty things might've been on my mind.

On a serious note, which ever guy's personality/character wins me over and if he's into guys. I'll romance the straight guy on my second playthrough since I also play as female characters.

I'll be playing a male elf. Ideally Cassandra, if shes available to that race/gender combination. If not... I'd have to see who the other options were.

Qunaris and Dwarves are most likely going to be the ones getting the shaft with race gating since its due to animations which makes me sad my first two pcs are going to be dwarf and qunari and I can't speak for other posters but playing as humans bore me and I'm very worried they'll end up with the most options  :(

I haven't the faintest idea who I will romance at this point.

My first playthrough is likely to be a Female Qunari, so i will likely have some restrictions. (Though i dont think Qunari will have as many as Dwarves.)

Theres no chance of it, but if i can romance Varric, then probably him.

Probably elf, since Sera may be race-gated too.

David Gaider mentioned that not all LIs are open to all races. Allan explained that creating the cinematics for 8 different body types for every LI would either explode the budget or seriously reduce the number of LIs.

Now everybody assumes the worst: all LIs, or at least those they are hot for, are race gated and are only available for the races they don't care for. Doom and despair all over!

I mean, race-gate could also mean that all LIs are open to all races, except Iron Bull, who is not available to elves. There is no word on how extensive the race-gating is used.

Considering the number of body types for Sera's scenes is reduced to max 4 anyways, I seriously doubt that they would recude it to 1 -- female elf. That would create a lot of content only for a small number of players.

Don't know. Considering my first playthrough will be with a male qunari, I'll have to wait and see what my options are.

For my second playthrough as a male human, I'm planning on romancing Cassandra as that pairing at least seems guaranteed.

It's always better to expect the worse so you can maybe be pleasantly surprised later. I'd rather be overly worried than overly hyped but that's just me.

If available to males Dorian

My elf magequisitors preference would probably be Dorian, Solas, Iron Bull, Cullen (but I doubt that would end well)

Others have stated it doesn't make much sense for certain classes to romance certain LIs, but I'd rather that be commented upon than gated off.

Fenris:  Mages, mages, mages.  Mages everywhere.  I can't seem to get away from them.  First Danaeris, then Hadriana, you, and my "sister."  I must be crazy.  Makes me wonder if you're using blood magic on me.

Hawke: I would never, not on you.

Fenris: *rivalry gained* I guess it will be something I have to learn to live with.  -_- / *rivalry gained* If I ever find out you've been using blood magic on me, I will crush your heart like I did Hadriana's.

Hawke: I am the one mage you never have to fear.

Varric: ...Stop.

Saarabas: What is it?

Varric:  It's...the Viscount's Keep, the smell of the blood from the ones who stood up to them, and the viscount looking up at me from the floor.  He was dead, but he was still looking at me.  And then they took Isabella, and Hawke...just let them.  After that, I never thought I'd see the qunari as anything but--

Saarabas:  *kisses him to silence him* I'm tal-vashoth, not qunari.

Vivienne: *chuckles*

Elfquisitor: What?

Vivienne: My father believed life had an "upward trajectory."  If he'd seen me here, with you, he'd be spitting hot coals.

Elfquisitor: Don't many nobles have an elf or two on the side?

Vivienne: Among the nobles, ma cher, who one beds, who one loves, and who one commits to for life are often three entirely different things.

Elfquisitor: The formidable Madame de Fer, dallying with an alienage age.  I'm sure you're the most talked about lady in all of Orlais!

Vivienne:  I know!  And you, ma cher, with your fancy armor and armies flying your banner.  What must the alienage say about you?

Elfquisitor: Look at him, his nose in the air, his armor all bright and shiny, bought with Madame de Fer's coin, I'm sure, paraded about the Orlesian balls like some sort of prettied-up pet.  Look at him, he's forgotten who he is, forgotten the alienage that raised him.  Why doesn't he bring his armies home to set his people free?

Vivienne:  You fight for all of us, ma cher.

Elfquisitor:  I'm aware of that.

Vivienne:  Then that's all that matters.

Not to nitpick, but all elves will be Dalish.

Did they confirm that?  I thought they'd just said the mage would be Dalish.

I'm all right if race + rogue is one backstory and race + warrior is another and race + mage is a third, but I hope we don't have a total of four different backgrounds.

But my point remains.  Programming effort notwithstanding, that's my ideal.

I don't think qunari PCs have much to worry about when it comes to race gating.

Personally, I think Cassandra will be the 'open to all comers' choice but have one of the harder romance paths.

That's a really well written dialogue! It felt very Dragon-Ageish, marking both culture and character, wiithout making fun of it.

Also, we don't know how the races see one another.  The dwarves may see the qunari as being so disgustingly huge to the point of uncanny valley, and the qunari may see the other races as neotonous.  If that were the case, Iron Bull, Blackwall, and Cassandra might be open to qunari romances, being brawnier because warrior.

Eh, mixed feelings on the matter. On the one hand, urge to roleplay that particular culture. On the other hand, dat blood writing...
