My Hawke jumped on a boat with Izzy for a life of adventure. So I'd say that was happy. She got to rescue her sister too, so I was very pleased at the way things ended in DA2. I'm glad about the Keep thing though because my version of the Hawke/Isabella romance wouldn't have carried through otherwise. If you don't lock in the romance (ask her "what about love?) you can still get other character's commenting on your "relationship" and still get romantic lines in the DLC. So I preferred keeping their love unspoken even though it was obvious to everyone else they were more than just friends. My Hawke is as stubborn as she is when it comes to professing love haha. If they ever return in DAI I'm sure one of them would have declared their love by then, I just won't know which one did :D .

I mainly did them because I didn't really agree with them both Fenris and Anders became rivals to my Hawkes on most playthroughs because most of my Hawke's didn't like the whole painting everyone with the same brush thing. If there had been an option for something similar to the rivalmances just less hate filled I would have picked it. Just don't like the whole notion of how both Fenris and Anders ignore any points the other side may have and I really hope that isn't a thing for the DAI romances. I'd like to be able to disagree with my companions without having to be a jerk about it and agree with them without sounding like a suck up as well.

What's the difference between a rivalmance and a regular romance.

In DA2 the romance paths were different depending on with you maxed the approval or disapproval path. "Rivalmance" is just what people call the disapproval path.

Rivalmance you basically disagree with pretty much everything you LI thinks and Friendshipmance is agreeing with them. Though the way DA2 was set up I didn't like it I either had to usually full out agree with everything or disagree with everything and I'd rather not have another romance system like that rivalmances felt too disrespectful and friendshipmances felt like constant sucking up.

I think this is why I liked Merrill's rivalry path.  You could be reasonably agreeable with her, but at a particular moment that is very important to her, disagreeing with her results in an instant move into the rival path, even if you weren't already headed that direction.

I found that such an important event changing the dynamic Merrill and Hawke worked out pretty well.  So in the end I agree, the romance path should be determined by more than just whether you are mean to a character, or always praising them.  Certain (irreconcilable) disagreements during important events could help make it work better.

Maybe.

I kind of think the Origins system is fine, honestly, just more reaction to it as things change. If you're constantly disagreeing with someone's beliefs, I expect them not to like you. I wouldn't like someone that constantly did things in opposition to everything I thought was important. It makes sense that they would just leave eventually. I mean, why would they stay and help you make the world a crappier place, by their view? That's why I didn't like the rival path, honestly. I didn't think rivals really had a reason to stick around you. Especially since there wasn't even a guiding force in DA2 to hold everyone together like there was in Origins and now in DA:I.

I had a hard time rivaling anyone, my LI or not. I like to make people happy... so by my second play-through on, I always made sure to avoid bringing certain companions to specific quests where I had to make a decision they wouldn't like. xD Fenris and Anders were really easy to keep happy that way.

The only people I ever had much of a problem with were Aveline and Merrill. Aveline didn't like how chaotic I could be at times and Merrill... well, I didn't hate her or anything, but the mirror demon thing was not my cup of tea. And she gets really angry with you if you go down that path... not her way.

Edit: Oh, and Sebastian always hates me. Why did I even buy him again?  <_<

Funny I thought Merrill was pretty easy to befriend and I couldn't get Sebastian to hate me (though I did look up how to rival him and a lot of it didn't sit well with me so I never bothered)

Maybe you bought him for the side quests he has or that accent? It's the only reason I bothered to pay for him xD

Oh, I did usually rival Carver as well -- I forgot about that one. It wasn't so much of an "I hate you" rivalry though, more just a sibling thing so it didn't bother me much.

Merrill was really easy to get along with for me until her personal quest. :c Of course I had a few playthroughs where I did it her way just so I could make her happy, but the way I would personally handle it (trying to protect her from the eluvian/demons) always resulted in her getting pretty upset with me. x.x

Sebastian always just hated me at the end for not killing Anders, who was my LI 90% of the time. x( heh. But yeah, I was just joking about that, I enjoyed the quests that DLC provided and he was quite a pretty addition.  :P

I didn't think the Seb one was overly hate until i let Anders live. Just different perspectives with respect.

Merrill is super easy to befriend, then you just refuse her one thing in Act 2 and she hates you forever and ever. I think it was also the intended way of doing it, going by the stuff she yells at you (i.e. all the guilty tripping about "I though her were my friend" stuff).

I did a "full" playthrough with Sebastian once, but it was a full rogue party and I needed him for that. Isabela, Varric and Sebastian...I didn't do it for the banter that's for sure.

Yep, pretty much that. x( Is there a way to reconcile with her after that? I don't think so, which always bothered me. lol. Gosh Merrill I was just trying to protect you! xD

Then actually protect her by watching over her while she fixes the mirror; don't ban fixing the mirror altogether.

I feel like Sebastian came with my copy. I pre-ordered, so maybe he just always came with pre-orders, or maybe it was a certain edition. I don't know. lol

I almost never used Sebastian, though. I found him to be one of the most grating characters.

I could never rival Carver maybe because I have a little brother but I just could never do it I always just wanted to give him lots of hugs and pats on the head.

Yeah most of my Hawkes let her have the item since they didn't know much about blood magic and normally didn't listen to Anders who would tell them its a bad idea. So I guess a lot of my Hawkes did it to annoy Anders now that I think about it xD Though I did like her rival path just fine though some parts of it made me feel I had just kicked an already crying puppy TT~TT

Oh yeah that, he usually leaves me too no way am I getting rid of my only healer and sometimes LI. Loved his accent and his side quests even if those quest were the only I ever bother to take him along for.

They said there weren't going to be DLC companions this time around right? I hope so, rather not get something like Sebastian again he just didn't' mix well into the rest of the game for me.

I could, but that leads to bad things. I know it happens either way, but at least trying to stop her always made me feel better about myself. xP

I would imagine that your obliteration of Merrill's dreams would make you feel worse... but not everyone has the same standards.

They're not doing any DLC companions like Sebastian. Maybe temps.. like Tallis.

I really hope they do DLC like Legacy, where you just bring your usual guys. I like that so much more than having a new one forced in. I just can't get attached to someone knowing I'll only see them in the one DLC.

Yeah, Merrill was just so naive and adorable, I just wanted to be her pal and look out for her, so her hating me always got me in the feels pretty hard. :c Anders is crazy, but I agree with his outlook on demons, they aren't something to play with if they can be avoided. (I hated how he treated her though, he was too harsh...)

Did they say that? Oh man, I really hope that's the case as well. Sebastian wasn't a character I really enjoyed, but I would just rather be able to have every possible companion with me from the start so the game feels "full".

Honestly, I don't think the risk from the demon was actually all that harsh. We fought a lot of pride demons. lol

I always support Merrill with the Eluvian. I agree with her that it's an important artifact and I don't agree with destroying things you don't understand because they scare you. I just wish we could have found somewhere else to take it where we might have gotten more help restoring it in more effective way.

I would (not happily, but would) obliterate a loved-one's dreams if it did indeed involve demons and the possible death of themselves/their family. And then they would hate me, but be safe! Unless it's a video game and it happens anyway, and my efforts were for nothing. XD
