Take her to the fade, she betrays you, all the while saying she knows what she is doing. She is unable to get the Eluvian working despite years of research. What does that tell you?

That's because everyone betrays Hawke after a few seconds of a spirit making them an offer, except for Anders, who is already an abomination.

The railroading happens here and there. Cullen also handwaves Hawke's warning about Anders' plot against the Kirkwall Chantry, but I doubt most would use that against the Knight-Captain.

Actually, she does mention that they were used to communicate across the elven empire.

They are not really communication devices, but rather teleportation devices. The problem is that at this moment, as a gamer, we know that Merrill is wrong or at least that she doesn't precisely knows what she is talking about (because of the dalish DAO origin and the witch hunt).

Also, Tamlen spoke about something he saw behind the mirror, and again, as a gamer, we know that. That could be darkspawn or other monsters.

I might have been misremembering it slightly. It was in the last game when it was confirmed, in the Dalish origin story: Duncan's the one to tell it, but Merrill was there. If she hadn't known beforehand, she certainly knows by the time of DA2.

I'm having difficulty at the moment finding the friendship quest beginning for Mirror Image to double-check. Given that Merrill did know what the Eluvians did, it'd be quite odd if she didn't mention it to Hawke.

She only needs help to get the thing to switch on; she successfully rebuilds it herself. And Morrigan stole books stolen by the Circle to confirm things; the Dalish aren't exactly known for having all of their old lore at their fingertips, after all.

And yet Merrill cannot figure out it is simply a portal, and loses Marethari because of her obsession with fixing the mirror.

Merrill does provide some information about the Eluvians, and even points out it was used for communication. You may dislike Merrill, but that doesn't change the fact that she pursued a course of action she felt would benefit the People.

Merrill doesn't make a deal with Audacity, she learned blood magic and refuses to release it from it's prison. As for spirits, Merrill says the protagonist can gather information from spirits without making a deal with them, which is precisely what Hawke can do with the Profane Abomination (to learn more about the primeval thaig) and Torpor (to discover that two spirits are vying for control of Feynriel); she also stresses that spirits are dangerous. You can gather information and defeat both the Profane Abomination and Torpor, with approval from Merrill.

I don't dislike Merrill I've told you I like her plenty of times. Its her actions in game I don't like. And what information does she point out? Maybe its on the friendship path? (which would make no sense the rivalry path is the perfect time to point it out). Because she keeps going "this'll save my people, this'll save my people." then never mentions how.

"You called a demon here." during the Sundermount quest. Someone felt the veil shift when she lowered the barrier. Somehow I'm thinking getting demons to do favors for her is par for the course for Merrill. It's not just bloodmagic. Also Hawke deal with the profane (if he/she makes one) would've blown up in his/her face if he/she was fighting competent (if Hawke's good at anything it's blundgeoning very hard). You can figure out Torpor's information on your own. There's nothing the demons could've told Hawke that he wouldn't have found out five minutes later. It's not like Torpor's info gives you better prepration.

I got rivalry when I killed Torpor after getting the info. It wasn't just instantly killing him. (Of course it was right at the end of the convo since I wanted her there when I killed him).

She loses Marethari due to Marethari's own evil. And figuring out that it's a portal is impossible, without a book that no one has and without the activation code.

I think it just boils down to that Morrigan had more to work with than Merrill.  Morrigan was raised and trained by Flemeth, and had her Grimoire for reference.  Merrill on the other hand only hat the patch work knowledge of old elven lore either passed down from Maretheri or pieced together by herself.

True. Morrigan does have plenty of unfair advantages. XD

And then she would have known it was impossible to fix. Why bother defending her when you know she was blinded to everything because of it.

Er, it wasn't impossible to fix? I'm not even sure what you're talking about anymore, to be honest.

Yeah considering how different Merrill is from the one in origins I'm not taking that as info she either knows or remembers. (That is after all the same Merrill who goes it's not worth their lives to investigate the mirror. Unless I'm remembering wrong).

Yep.

She rebuilt it to look the same. There's no proof that even if she had known how to turn it on it would've functioned. Even on the friendship path the thing never works.

I like the hard no answer to the profane that tries to make a deal with you, because Hawke totally punches a rock monster in the face. That's one of those wtf moments where I totally did not expect the dialog to go there. XD

lol sadly that is warrior exclusive I believe. Which is sad cause I wanted my mage to do it T_T which makes sense tho warrior Hawke is probably the only one who could punch that hard.

The activation code is hidden and I don't think anyone knows it, perhaps not even Audacity, at least not in the Kirkwall area.

Marethari dies because she let Audacity loose and became an abomination, and Merrill was forced to kill her to defend her life. I don't understand why some people insist on blaming Merrill for the actions of other people.

the Mirror is an unhealthy obsession. Best for Merrill to destroy it.

She lets go of her obsession at the same time in both areas, it's just that friendship is far healthier emotionally.

Nope but if you can show in DA2 she still has that information then yeah I'm going to take it as one of those things that could've changed between the two games. Cause you know that sort of thing happens. Considering the two characters act nothing alike except in name.

She (nor Hawke) knows the damn thing even has an activation code. All she knows it it won't work for some reason.

One's among Dalish, one's among humans. Merrill acts a lot more like her DAO self when interacting with the Dalish.

And if you want to ask whether there was a retcon, perhaps you could tweet Mary Kirby.

She does not. She lets go completely when she destroys it. She does not do that on the friendship side, which is simply enabling her to work on it for no reason, and simply standing by when problems happen that are resultant from her actions and desires in the first place.

They changed her appearance and personality, not what actually happened or what she witnessed. Merrill still remembers and references quite a few points in that origin, especially if you upload a Dalish playthrough. She and other clanmates mention Tamlin disappearing, Mahariel getting tainted and either dying or joining the Wardens, she mentions meeting Duncan (the human with the beard), etc.

She rebuilt it to look the same. There's no proof that even if she had known how to turn it on it would've functioned. Even on the friendship path the thing never works.

Because they have to slay Audacity before she can ask it how to activate it. =/

If she was able to turn it on, I think by default that would assure it functioned.

Really? So she's more cautious when among the dalish? Odd. I didn't see that.

I don't have a twitter XD

Incorrect. She works on it for the same amount of time on both paths, and while she doesn't destroy it on the friendship path, she does stop trying to help people who never wanted help to begin with and lets go of the Eluvian obsession anyway. Also, one never stands by; the friendship path does help her out when problems arise in Act 3.

DAI Romances related. As far as I know it hasn't been confirmed but does anyone think Cassandra and Cullen are going to be straight or bi? I've got a feeling Cullen is going to be bi and Cassandra is going to be straight just because I think the Bisexual romances will be the NPC ones. No real reason I think that though just a hunch on my own part.

The main origin stuff yes. Fair enough I'll take it as she knows it's a portal. So...how exactly will fixing that help her people? Especially when she knows that according to Tamlen and Mahriel it teleported to somewhere there was darkspawn? Hell how exactly does she know "cleansing" it isn't merely a temporary measure until she reactivates it and it points exactly back to what corrupted it in the first place? Seeing as how the mirror wasn't tainted or spewing darkspawn til Tamlen touched (activated) it?

Hell thinking on like that makes the mirror thing worse.

Unless she knows how to change where it points to all she's doing is potentially reopening the thing that started the issue in the first place.

Or it might not have. There's really no way to know either way.
