Are you kidding me? He's faaaabulous!!!

Well, just because he looks that way doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I mean, Sera doesn't particularly look like she would be into women to me. I dont see any "clues" there or anything.

I hope he's bisexual, personally, but i generally hope everyone in the game is.

When?! Where?! How did I miss that letter?!

Oh, it's a classic!  I used to have the threads bookmarked, but I think it got lost in the forum change.  You can read about it and DG's answer here.  This was back in 2011.

One thing I fail to understand... why are so many people convinced that Dorian is going to end up the homosexual exclusive for men? It seems most people have either pinpointed him or Solas. Honestly, I'm making no assumptions on the matter myself, but what about Blackwall? I recall seeing a dev or staff member (Gaider?) saying that the nickname "Ser Bara" is warming up to him... now, while I have no idea if the comment was made with this knowledge, but "bara" is a Japanese term that, from my recollection, amounts to "manly gay." By no means a confirmation of Blackwall's sexuality, but I think that's a much stronger hint than there's been for the other men of the Inquisition.

With Dorian, one of the reasons why I think he'll be a gay LI is due to his background.  We haven't seen a Tevinter magister with a good heart in the games yet (Mae I'm sure will get her time to shine in the next game.)  Also, there is a serious lack of gay men that aren't villains in video games.  I've checked out the statistics, and let's just say there is a disturbing trend of gay men being represented as villains in video games.  Or as a joke.

I figure with Dorian, we could get a Tevinter magister to get to know that isn't a blood mage/slaver/all around loony, and we get a gay companion, a hero, in a video game that isn't there to be mocked, scorned or turn villainous.  It would be a welcome counter-balance in many respects.

I just realized I don't ever use the words "manly" or "feminine" to describe anyone. They seem to vague and potentially offensive. The most I recall using is "androgynous", usually referring to men.

That seems like a good habit to get into, I'd say.

I think the reason some people peg Dorian as being gay is because of his looks,he has a flamboyant appearance which is a common stereotype among gay men.

Mostly, back when it was just set sexualities we knew about, and people were assuming a 2/2/2 split of straight/bi/gay companions, the speculation stemmed from a common elimination thought process.  Cullen is confirmed as LI, he showed interest in a lady Warden, and people assumed 'most likely straight.'  We've had bisexual elves in every DA game, so Solas as bi might be an option.  Cole isn't an option, IB and Varric were thought to be really unlikely due to race, and Blackwall was considered "old" and close to his Calling to be considered a "happy" LI endgame for the first purely gay dude companion.  Leaving Dorian as the remaining option, so the gay one.

Then there are others that are basing his being gay off of really frivolous and coded things.

Bara is an art and fiction media genre of that focuses on same-sex relations between men, or Men's Love, with masculine and hypermasculine characters.  Blackwall is burly, large, muscular, bearded.  Ser Bara, as a nickname, resulted from that.  I liked that nicknme the most.

Something else I wanted to mention that's a quirk about Tevinter.  They say homosexuality is fine, but only with slaves.  What if Dorian wanted a real connection with someone he could love, with someone that he didn't have to hide?  Something more than just a tumble in the hay?

Where did you get that? The Tevinter view on homosexuality?

That's why I wanna do a RomeoJuliet with my saarabas, if Varric isn't an option. Or in a later play.

Dorian never even blipped on my radar until I started coming here and now I'm over here with a list with PCs I'm going to make trying to figure out the order to use them and who they'll have as an LI if any at all and just realized I made two qunaris who are basically the exact same aside from gender solely because I for some reason want a qunari mage with Dorian if he is an available LI, you people did this to me and I gotta say thanks for it!   still rewriting my PC I wanted for Iron Bull though since I won't get an adorable dwarf qunari romance >>

It's been well over a year since I've played DA2, but doesn't Fenris either imply or outright state he was forced to "serve" Danarius in a sexual capacity?

I assume that's where I've gotten my impressions from. The Tevinter views on homosexuality seem to be quite similar to ancient Rome.

Indeed. You are right about Fenris, and I agree that it seems similar to Rome.

Orlais doesn't care, as long as you are not dallying with an elf or someone else far below your station. We know nothing of the Anderfels, Antiva, or Rivain.

Yep,it says right here that homosexuality is actively encouraged with favored slaves but is considered deviant and selfish when done among nobles in Tevinter.

World of Thedas, page 72:

"What I find most interesting is that, despite the lack of open discussion on matters of human sexuality, there is commonality to be found on the subject in all Andrastian lands.

Typically, one’s sexual habits are considered natural and separate from matters of procreation, and only among the nobility, where procreation involves issues of inheritance and the union of powerful families, is it considered of vital importance.

Yet even there, a noble who has done their duty to the family might be allowed to pursue their own sexual interests without raising eyebrows.

The view on indulging lusts with a member of the same gender varies from land to land.  In Orlais, it is considered a quirk of character and nothing more.  In Ferelden, it is a matter of scandal if done indiscreetly but otherwise nothing noteworthy.  In Tevinter, it is considered selfish and deviant behavior among nobles, but actively encouraged with favored slaves.  Nowhere is it forbidden, and sex of any kind is only considered worthy of judgement when taken to awful excess or performed in the public eye."

Antiva seems pretty libertine (I think im using that word right). Do we know with Fereldin? Its fairly obvious that the armor-smith gentlemen are a thing, but it doesn't seem like something encouraged by the Chantry.

I think Zevran said something about how gay relationships are pretty common in Antiva.I could be wrong about that though.

Didn't David say that one of the characters is struggling with his/her sexuality? Dorian would make sense within that context.

Doesn't Dorian rebel against his mentor? He might not agree with his fellows from Tevinter on everything, I'd guess.
