I'm happy to have the chance to be an elf again, but I wont use dwarf/qunari. I wouldn't miss them if they were removed. I'm happy for people that wanted them, but if we were going on a vote basis, I would go for just human or human/elf, if that was possible. If there were unlimited resources, then I'd say make everything, but it seems like adding all these new races strains the cinematics budget. We're especially seeing that with romances, I think, with the added gating.
No dwarves would make me very sad. I don't really the mass appeal of elves since they almost always look just like humans only with pointy ears and in most fantasy settings are placed on a high pedestal. DAO doesn't do this I know and that was kind of refreshing to see, and my third favorite origin in City Elf thanks to DAO but still if dwarves went poof I'd be sad, can't speak for qunari since we haven't bee able to play as one yet, who knows maybe DAI will make me love qunari like DAO made me love dwarves. And as much as it doesn't make sense if they only let you choose between humans and elves I probably wouldn't but the game. I don't mind games where I have to be one race and don't get to choose but getting two options I don't like when ones I did like were available before rubs me the wrong way, I am aware that makes me sound bratty though
(hmm wonder why I'm not allowed to post images on here anymore getting a little strange)

As long as I liked one race, I'd buy the game. Like, if it were human and dwarf or elf and qunari. Or just human, just elf. Human and elf are the ones I like, so that's what I'd rather have. I just don't really care, though, as long as it's one I like.
I like elves because they look like lithe humans with pointy ears. lol
Honestly, I don't want to play as something super different looking. I understand it's interesting to other people and that's totally fine. I mean, I understand why Bioware adds it for people that like it. I don't play a lot of other games, so it's not like I see them much elsewhere. I played Skyrim, but their elves were really different, in appearance and culture. I liked the elf body build and everyone in Skyrim looked unfortunate in the face, so I picked a wood elf. That's the only game besides DA where I've played an elf. Games always make the human dudes ridiculously jacked, though, so a lot of the time I actually like the elf body builds more.

True... it was still a big step up from the faces in Oblivion, though. *cough* xD

One of my concerns regarding the racegating is this;
In origins we were able to cheat the system. We could play a character that by all rights our LI should hate, but enough shiny things and we're their true love. And of course, DA2 had the rivalmances, where we could romance LI's while opposing everything they stand for.
Now, we don't know how the romance system in DAI is going to work so this isn't a concrete fear, but my concern is once again we'll be able to romance a character while still being the living embodiment of all they hate. And I think that if we could romance a given character despite being (in their eyes) a horrible person, while on another toon who represents everything they believe in and who actually gets along well with them, we wouldn't be able to romance them because of our race.
That hypothetical is really disturbing to me. Of course, like I said, might not work out like that at all. We'll see.

Yep - I've played a lot of non-human races for lore and looks - dranei, dwarf, night-elf, tiefling, argonian, khajit, ratonga, etc.

The fan art for the draenei is really depressing in it's own way too. It was actually a little difficult to find a pic of a Draenei that wasn't really in really skimpy "armor."

I made the horrible mistake of Gooling the Draenei. Unfortunately for me, my search was unfiltered. All I learned was that Rule 34 is most certainly real.

I can get behind that still would at least make me question why the took the race out even if it was a race I didn't care for like say elves I'd still wonder why they were removed from a game they were apart of before.
Guess I'm just drawn to the opposite it seems, I blame Gargoyles, and books. Knew those paper fiends would rot my brain ![]()
Elves are probably the race I play the most in Skyrim since they look different than the fiction elves I'm used to seeing. I just like a race that isn't suppose to be human or isn't suppose to be a subspecies of human look non human. Kind of makes me scratch my head when I see something that is suppose to be a completely different race from human look exactly like a human. Some people like it some don't and I don't. (maybe to me it always seems like a lack of creativity but that's just my opinion) Nothing against people who do like that approach though of course ![]()

I'm hoping the whole "they react to your choices." bit means we won't be able to cheat the system anymore. I am really hoping that's the case for much the same reason. I don't mind disagreements in my romances (but a. they should be acknowledged and b. there's a limit).

Oh wow. See, I have turned off the safety filter once and promptly regretted it. That was 3 years ago and I still regret it to this day. The mental scars fade, but will never entirely heal.
It's always bothered me that you could romance someone while going against all their core beliefs. I honestly hope you can't do it easily this time.
Me too. While being a blood mage with Anders or Fenris is a little amusing, it just felt wrong to me.

I just played Dumner so I had a reason to be ugly, anyway. xD But yeah, I had an appreciation for the better faces of skyrim simply from having played the earlier installments, lol.
From what I've seen they're making the romance system much more complicated than the gift-giving in DA:O, so I wonder this time around if it will be so simple to keep up a relationship despite being totally opposed to the character, especially since we don't have rivalmance this time.

Yeah I refused to finish creating my character til I had a good portion of face creation mods installed. Thankfully those were up quick.

I really hope so. Because if I can romance Cassandra as a complete bastard of a human or elf but not as a heroic qunari, then I think there's a problem.

This drives me crazy.
There are times it makes sense. Isabela is rather carefree and fun loving, but shouldn't be too bothered about her lover being more serious and noble. Yes, she probably finds a Hawke like that boring, but it's also nice to have someone who will always have you back and who is a stable influence in your life.
Alternatively, it's one thing for Fenris to love a mage, and another thing for him to love a slaver or a blood mage, or someone who uses their magic in cruel and abusive ways. At some point, there should be a line that he won't stand to see crossed.

Phew, I'm glad. xD But yeah... I get a little peeved sometimes about that, so it's something I bring up on occasion. I have nothing against attractive female characters/races of course, but then I see so many people talking about only that and I'll be like oh that's nice, that's why they are liked, great.

As someone who has rivalmanced Anders quite a bit I agree with you 100% (though I do still want gift spamming, I swear I don't go overboard on the abuse of it) There are some things that if a companion of ours highly believes in and we go against it and destroy what they believe in I think they should then be off the market so to speak. Now they shouldn't hate you for simply disagreeing with them on some things but a promage LI shouldn't be willing to be with someone who sees all mages as lesser beings that need to be made tranquil, but they should be open to someone that may not be pulling for complete mage freedom but does want conditions for mages to be made better. If that makes any sense.

Aww, thanks hun.
While I can understand the attraction to the "prettier races," that's never been a deciding factor for me. My favorite DA race is dwarf and when I was Horde in WoW for awhile (man, this takes me back. Been over 2 years gone now,) I was a proud troll. Ya mon! Those aren't exactly a very pretty race, no matter the setting trolls appear in.
However, it was the story of all of those races that makes me want to play them, with their looks a very low priority. ![]()

Agreed. It'd make the "well it was for better characterization!" ring hollow too.

Rivalmanced Anders Hawke can be this. (heck my diplo Hawke had a whole argument with him about how he should try to go to the Chantry for mediation instead of extremism that'd just get him killed and prove the templars point).

I'm not so sure about that. Most RPG games races popularity goes from most human looking to less human looking (minus in Asia where cute and fury is the most popular).
For DA, this mean human > elves > qunari1> dwarf > qunari2 . Where qunari1 is the Sten-type and qunari2 is the Arishok type.
The setting lack a cute and fury race...
I thought dwarves were the cute and fury race?

That conversation is why I usually rivalmance him though I end up getting too much approval and have to take ti down abusive lane to keep the rivalry up which makes me feel icky all over. One of the reason's I usually do a rivalmance with Anders is because Hawke and him can actually have a conversation where Hawkes telling him that they support his goal but not his methods and that he's only proving the templars right.
