To say that you won't play a game based solely on the fact that you cannot romance a certain character or that you find the ones you can to be ugly, is so horrifyingly superficial. We are so spoiled for graphics these days, five-ten years ago no one really cared about how characters looked, it boggles my mind really. Maybe play the game first and wait to see if you think it is worth it?
I had a severe dislike of Benedict Cumberbatch, thought he was ugly and strange looking, but the moment I saw him act as Sherlock I was bowled over at how awesome he is as an actor, same with Tom Hiddleston. Get to know their personalities in game before you write them off based on how they look, they might surprise and grow on you.
(This is only to the people described as I have seen so many people moaning over this issue lately and its annoying)

I already find this cast more appealing than in the previous episodes actually.
A grey warden, a seeker, a rogue from the friends of Jenny, a first enchanter and courtier at the orlesian court, Cole, etc etc.

Poor Oghren, under-appreciated until the end.
Oghren had his moments, and I loved his final dialogue in Origins, but he was extremely tiresome in Awakenings, especially if Sigrun was in the group. The best thing about it, however, was how Sigrun was able to intimidate him.

And yet we also see things about Loghain that are more than that, his protectiveness of Anora, his feelings for Mabari, etc...Loghain is your standard issue "Ends-justify-means" radical douchebag, Sten is the common "Quiet, Philosophical, Warrior"
And none of the other characters you were pining for are any more exceptional.
Sten offers a new viewpoint one that completely devalues traditional virtues such as independence or breaking the bonds of your birth

Now I shall say play the waiting game. Wait for more info on the characters, watch a few early let's plays (since the chance of this game breaking the street date is ridiculously high) see if you still don't like the characters. Because sometimes the early info doesn't paint as clear a picture and the characters surprise you. At least give them that chance.

I don't see how you can maker those judgements yet when we have such scant info. All would suggest is try to go into the game with an open mind and maybe you will be surprised.
People have been adoring these characters for months now. If it's okay to find them interesting and exciting, then it's okay to find them uninteresting and unexciting.

And instead of asking why I think that way you instead immediately act hostile and make thinly veiled accusationsIt's just really suspect that the characters you can't see being interesting are almost all women, and the characters you want to replace them with (despite the fact that we've had ample opportunity to explore a couple of their character arcs) are all men. You might not realize it, but that's exactly the sort of thinking that leads to women being relegated to supporting roles in, like, everything.

Yes. And you have no reason to think that these new companions won't also have more depth to them than just an archetype.

Cole could be seen as the standard "Naive, quirky, well-meaning outsider" archetype, which does fit him to a tee.

Maybe I think people go over the top with their judgements on the characters at this stage whether positive or negative.
Be that as it may Steelcan is explicitly comparing them to characters in games we have already played where we can obviously make informed judgements as to the characters as opposed to DAI where we can't. That is why I say to try and keep an open mind.

Are we still talking about cliches when we go four personality traits in? And where does "serial killer" fit in there? Also a spirit.
Anyway, if the point is that every character ever is a cliche and that things only become *not* cliche through execution of subtlety and nuance, then I'm fine to leave it at that.

That is the point. Bad characters are just cliches (Oghren, sadly), good characters rise above them. Just because you can fit a character into an archetype doesn't mean they suck.
I think that is escaping a lot of the pessimists in this thread.
