@Vapaa Er, how would having a dwarven female LI be redundant?  Guys might want a lady dwarf to romance too, and this would be a great way to have both the first male dwarf LI and the first female dwarven LI in BioWare's history at once.   ;)

Two dwarfs are redondant, and since Bioware wants to tell different stories with the romances, I really don't think two dwarf LI will be a thing.

I know it is a futile hope, but I want Fiona as the non-companion and non-adviser LI option.

With her confirmed lore connections, I doubt that's going to happen.   :(

I can imagine it now: "I can bang Alistair's mom!  Thank you/How dare you BioWare!"  I know you love the character and all, but that seems like it could be too weird of an area to go to.  For some folks, this would be their Warden's lover's/husband's mother.  I know it's a different PC and all, but it seems a little squicky.

We have 4 Human LIs, are they redundant too?

So a Varric, a guy from Kirkwall and a born surface dwarf, would have the same story as Dagna, a lady, who was from Orzammar, and joined the Circle to study magic?

That's like saying that we never need two humans to romance, because two of the same race is redundant.

I personaly think so, but because they are human, it's easier for a writer to come up with more variety, Thedas has 7 different humans cultures, but for the dwarves, qunaris and elves, it's more or less the same, even the big differences within their race is always a difference in how inflenced by human culture they are (vashloths/quanaris, surface dwarves/normal dwarves, city elves/dalish elves), they don't have big cultural differences of their own.

Ah I forgot about that. Perhaps it's Dagna or Celene.

Aimo will be crushed if Blackwall isn't an LI though. xP

Aimo would not be the only one. :(

I would rather find out now what are the options and get over it.

@Adorkable Do you think Varric isn't going to be a race-gated LI?  (love your name, by the way)

To be honest, I still don't think Varric is over Bianca, like at all. Even though you can equip him with daggers which some believe to be a hint that he's over Bianca, even in the Q&A, they stated that if Varric is gonna be an archer, it's gonna only be with Bianca. + If you've read the comics *which i have and reccommend because they're fantastic* Spoiler alert there's a part where Varric is trapped in the Fade and he sees a vision of Bianca and him intimate and he's truly happy and it takes all that he could to reject the fantasy. Plus I feel like a Varric romance would be one of those romance archetypes where he'd constantly compare you to Bianca. IDK He's always been a bro through and through so I personally don't see him as a LI. If he is, which I think would be flippin fantastic, I'm not sure if it'd be race gated since personally in the comics I couldn't really tell if bianca was a dwarf, I think she is though. Plus Varric makes several references to still showing attraction towards fem dwarves ie the "This tavern would be better if there were some cute dwarven ladies serving" something like that but yeah, so yes no maybe so if he is a romance option?

As a side note, if Varric and Dagna are confirmed romances I wouldn't think that'd be redundant at all. Some of like to actually play dwarves *me included* and would like to see them with a dwarf if possible! :)

I would say that each Dalish clan is its own nation. Otherwise, they would unite to form one.

And since there are several human nations, there are also several different kinds of city elves.

Dwarves from Orzammar and Kal-Sharok are different. Like city elves, surface dwarves can probably come from anywhere.

As for the qunari....there is an entire branch of the Qun dedicated to converting Vashoth. Clearly, they are different.

If we don't know about different cultures, it simply means they have been lost through time (like the Dalish and the Dwarves from different thaigs) or simply undiscovered yet.

I just have a really hard time believing second tier NPCs could have any kind of comparable romance to companions. They've made a strong case for the advisors, and I'm willing to believe they've made their involvement beefy enough that the party banter will be a small loss. I just can't really believe right now that secondary NPCs will be the same. So, I'm going to assume they meant something similar to the flings you could have in DA:O. Until we get more information, I just can't see it another way.

Garrus was a great best friend (I don't ever use the word bro, sorry,) but that didn't stop BW from making him into a very well done romance in Mass Effect 2 and 3.  For the record, I've played the games twice now, once with Garrus as my best friend, and once as the romance.  The friendship was great on it's own, and I never felt like I was missing out because I didn't choose the romance.  When I did the second time around, the romance just added to the friendship and made it better to me.  It helps that the romantic and friendship sequences were integrated beautifully.

As a general question: Why do you think it's a good idea to keep Varric where he is when it comes to romance?

He hasn't seen the real woman Bianca in at least 10-11 years (at least before he met Hawke) outside of a Fade nightmare.  He's personalized his crossbow to the point of referring to it as a real person, even though Until We Sleep had him largely coming to terms with his past while in the Fade.  He's around 40-43 years old.  He has used that as excuse to avoid intimacy for over a decade, and if the DA team continued to used it for Inquisition, it would frustrate me.

I wouldn't take it a sign that he wouldn't use another bow to mean that he's unavailable as an LI.  That could be something as simple as a weapon preference, as well as more healthy sentimental attachment.   It doesn't have to be a reason why he's unavailable for romance.  Unless he can't use his weapon without being too attached to the real Bianca, which would just be creepy, but I digress.

I always felt that Varric being Hawke's best bud in DA2 shouldn't preclude him from being a future romance at all.  Different people, different circumstances, and also best friends end up falling in romantic love and marrying all the time.

Besides, I don't think a friendship with Varric would suffer if he was a LI.  Folks can still happily leave him as a friend and the rest of us that's willing to go through the race gating can have him as a best friend we love.   :D

In Dragon Age 2, I happily accepted Bianca as his reason for unavailability, because the events behind her vanishing could have happened in that year while Hawke was still working for the smugglers/mercs or at least pretty recently prior to the events of the game.  However, after I know it's been 11 years since he saw her, stating that Bianca is still a reason looks like it would be an poor excuse by the devs at this point.

Now, reasons like being too far from home (remember, he thought the Wounded Coast was too far out of town for his liking,) demons falling from the sky, possible guilt over his accidental hand in the Kirkwall Incident (like Anders, the red lyrium getting out, ect,) I can all accept at this point.   Just not Bianca, again.

Forgive me if I came off a little ranty, I think it's just my general frustration on the subject.  I noticed you do support the idea of a couple of dwarves to love, so thank you.  I wasn't trying to come down on you, and I'm sorry if I came across that way.

Well, it's human writer bias, I found that a lot of non-human culture in fantasy/sci-fi setting are rather monolithic, see planet of hats

ME kind of went around that by making humanity monolithic, I liked it.

All lot of that falls under informed ability, humans culture are heavily documented, dalish clans are SAID to be different, not SHOWN.

What if we meet Bann Teagan at Redcliffe? What if he's Arl Teagan now?? Could he be the non-follower/non-companion romance?? It sounds crazy, I know. I also know he can be married to Kaitlyn in some playthroughs but whatever, she could die or they could just get divorced or something. I-IT COULD HAPPEN RIGHT??  (ノД`)・゜・

Yeah, after mulling it over this seems more likely to me. Especially considering the wording of 'at least one that I know of', since one would assume that out of 8 LIs they could probably keep track of them all without much difficulty.

@Natashina

Oh! You weren't being ranty at all! I enjoyed reading all of that to be honest :) And now that you mention it I totally forgot about the whole Garrus thing till now, which is definitely a valid point. And it comes to mind that it would be a little redundant if he uses Bianca as an excuse for a lack of romantic intimacy considering the time that's past and all. I think it's just me not being able to see Varric anymore than that "loveable dwarf" sidekick dude but same could be said and we could be thrown a curveball. Either way I'd love to romance Varric, just becuase of his sexy chest hair and Brian Bloom is gorgeous in every way including his voice.

I just feel like writerwise, they have more reasons to keep Varric unromancable than otherwise, what these reasons would be I would have no idea xD But I'd love if he were a romance options, that'd be an interesting surprise and it'd be nice to see him truly happy.

Unless DAI ends tragically in some shape or form ;_;

But the more dwarf options the merrier, i'm all for variety in races *is a player that pays every race at least once*

Pardon me for barging in, but I don't visit the forums much until the game is close to being released, and I was wondering if the good people who frequent this place could answer, or better confirm, something for me, because I dread it...

So, is it true that only male female-only romance (as those are the only ones that interest me and I go for) in the game is Cullen? That creepy, stalking, certainly driven insane (or very nearly pushed over the edge) by a demon Cullen, from Mage origin? The second in command of the most brutal Mage Circle we've seen so far in the setting? That Cullen is a romance option?!

I feel like I'm just going to confirm my fears, but please say it isn't so :(

Thanks in advance :)

It's not confirmed what all the romances available to a female Inquisitor are. It's likely (not confirmed) that Cullen will be the only heterosexual male romance. There will be at least one, maybe two, bisexual males. One is confirmed, but not who that is.

Yes, that Cullen.  He's the only confirmed straight romance for women so far, but he won't be the only male to available to the ladies to romance, I'm sure.  The others will be bisexual from the looks of it, but I hope that doesn't bother you.

Also, the same Cullen that admits to Hawke even before the end of Act III that Meredith's begun to lose it.  Talk to him in the Gallows during that act before things go to hell and he'll mention this.  I'm not a huge Cullen fan, but it isn't quite as bad as all that anymore, imho.   :)

Since you really don't seem to like the guy, if it helps, he's an important NPC that will probably have a guest spot in our party sometimes and will probably have unavoidable quests that link to him.  However, he won't be a full-fledged companion.
