First off, has hugging been confirmed? If so, kudos! Secondly, THERE ARE ROMANCE INTERACTIONS OUTSIDE OF SEXY TIME?! Ahem. Bioware, pls. The torture is great. There are still 3.6 months until the release.

Ahem. Anyway, thank you very much for explaining this! I had no idea that you wrote the characters before deciding if they were a romance! And I would very much rather have more hetero/bi/homosexual characters than have all romances be bisexual. At least this way I have more choice, and I'm more than happy to experiment the romances with different races/genders! =3

Since IB has practically be confirmed as a romance option, I'm satisfied.

Please don't take any specifics I say as confirmation of any particular acts.  Just because I actually don't know what, specifically, is shown in all (or really any) of the final/hardened versions of these cinematics (it's not a part of my job, so I'd have to actively go hunting for the scenes in my own time - although QA as a whole is starting to spend more and more time just "in the game" but since this isn't my first rodeo, I find myself coordinating and prioritizing work and helping deal with the best place for specific requests to go based on the request).

I had a feeling the "hardened" comment would... get a rise... out of some.

Just to be clear though, that's literally the last stage for ALL cinematics internally haha.

Just to add: The opinions that Allan has do not necessarily reflect the current direction of the game, nor the attitudes of BioWare as a whole.  He's just sharing his views like the rest of us, unless he otherwise notes as such.  Things such as the technical aspects that are mentioned on the OP or what BW isn't going to do in this game are a different matter.      :D

It's a tricky line to walk and I can understand that someone can read what I am saying with the auspice of authority and so forth.  But yeah, a lot of the time I try to speak more informally too, and sometimes even "from one fan to another" in terms of what I like and do not like in games.  But yeah, on this topic I have shared that the specifics about character interactions including romance content isn't something that is essential for myself.  I know I'd enjoy "more companion content" regardless of what it is, and that it can be emotional (which I enjoy) without requiring romance.  Yet, here we are in DAI, romances existing! :)

So does the QA team have any in office "memes" based on bugs you all have found yet?

Those are the best jokes that no one ever gets to know.

Someone referred to the mount as "Ser Noodle" and made a fun compilation video of assorted animation issues the mount had.  Specifically an issue with the legs flopping around a lot while running in a manner than can not be in anyway described as natural.  Much laughs.

I've seen some hilarious romance ones too, where [REDACTED] goes to [REDACTED] with [REDACTED] and the cinematic designer spliced in a humourous sound to call it out! :P

Oh please release a blooper's video.  I'll pay a few bucks/spend some BW points to see some of those errors.   :P

Somehow, the REDACTED comments make this pretty funny too.  I look forward to seeing what in blazes you're talking about.

Haha, I know a blooper reel has been discussed among QA.  At this point though I'm not aware of any plans outside of that and they didn't strike me as more than just musings.

If you can remember after release, link this thread and ask me and I'll tell you what the REDACTED was :)

How am I taunting anyone by saying I think the non-companion romances will be straight?

People acting like it's an impossibility just shows how pervasive heterosexual privilege is. Like it's OK to make gay exclusive romances non-companion, but not the straight exclusive ones? Why is that? Why is the idea of all the companions being gay or bi so upsetting?

Taunting and/or schadenfreude type comments would come more from saying "Poor straight people. Maybe they should get a taste of how it feels to have so few options."

Having said that, I don't agree with your comment being taunting, but rather as much an expression and request for a degree of understanding and sympathy for those that typically do have to suffer with marginalized content.  Further, that there's nothing mandating that the straight romance interests cannot be advisors simply because they are advisors.

If you were to come in and say: "Haha straight people are just going to have to deal with having the crap romance options" (which you didn't) then it'd be something that I would consider a vaulting point for escalation and I'd be inclined to speak up.

Must have missed the part in your post where you said it was a theory or your opinion.

And as to the straight male players who said they wouldn't by the game just because of Sera? Their loss.

To be fair, the default position I tend to take by most posters is that they are sharing their opinion (or something else like hopes, fears, concerns) as opposed to definitive facts.

It's safer this way I find and mitigates the need for overuse of "in my opinion" in posts.

Removed some posts relating to the posting habits of other boards.  While I have no doubts that there's some people that will actively not pick up our game because a love interest they want is straight or gay, it's also conjecture and may not even be representative of the opinion of a particular message board and as such I don't want to derail the thread with discussions about ambiguous people, nor do I really want to have us linking to other boards about it.

My recommendation is to take the statement as a "please understand how gay people often feel, especially in light of how they are told they should be grateful for getting anything. It sucks."

Sometimes I still do the "imo" acronym. It makes things easier for people not quite as used to reading some posts.

I do too, but largely out of habit I think.

Correct. Poorly.

And in this game i feel like it is equally as poor for straight romance options.

But i really dont want to get into this anymore. I have said what i feel on the straight options, and thats really all i got.

"Equally" as poor?

I am relaxed but i will give my opinion on things that are uncomfortable to me just like you would.

I used to be uncomfortable with it too.  But the more I let myself be exposed to it the less issue I had with it, and this helped carry over into reality too.

It's just someone flirting.  If I want them to stop, I can say so and they will (which is a bit more than can be said about the real world).  It's nothing bad, and it doesn't mean I'm a different person because I was asked.

Im fine with gay content in a game but not when it comes on to me i have no choice bioware make that for me.

Our games are about allowing the player choice to respond to events.  Anders' action is one such thing, and you are given a choice to respond.

If your preference is to insulate yourself from this sort of stuff, then it's possible that you either need to reflect to a point where that's less of an issue, or reevaluate the game.  The game does not bend to the will of the player, and events will happen outside of the player's control for a wide variety of topics.

Thats fine Allan but people should not start on me cause i am.  I have the right to give my feedback to stuff i like and dont. Just seems cause im a straight man thats a bad thing on here.

No, I'm a straight man.  Many people here seem to like me (though I'm sure not all) so I don't think being straight makes yourself unliked.

I'm saying you need to ask yourself why it makes you feel uncomfortable, because I believe it's an internal challenge for yourself.  I have no interest in being in a relationship with another man.  If one flirts with me I'll more than likely be completely oblivious to it... but if they're clear that they want more than friendship, I simply let them know that I am not interested.

Well it a bad thing for me people start on me cause of my input.

If you'd like we can take this to PM, because I think the issue many have with your post is that you're implying a degree of judgment against gay people.

I remember the Devs saying that Rivalry was not being mean, but  just disagreeing on the companion's big issue. I personally preferred the rivalry romance for Merrill because it seemed more realistic, not like the rivalry romance which was simply butterflies and rainbows.

I think we had mixed success on this, however.  I can understand how some people had issues with them.

Mainly that there aren't LIs involved. I mean, I love Garrus/Tali, but I also hate it since those two are my favorite LIs but I don't like breaking that up by romancing one.

By initiating a romance with pretty much anyone (video games or real life) you're almost certainly breaking up some other, hypothetical relationship that that person would have otherwise had.

In DA II, I got two romances. In DA:I, I will probably get two romances.

Agreed, not everyone will benefit from doing it this way.  But some will indeed get more choices, supposing they replay the game several times.

Which is one thing that concerns me.  Ultimately it is a characterisation issue, so having it driven by resources is less than ideal.

It's resource driven from the stand point of "what are we going to do with all the zots that we have."  That doesn't mean that we're going "la dee da" and the suddenly "oh snap, this character cannot be bisexual now due to resources."

Given more resources we'd always do more, so I struggle somewhat to think of something that isn't driven by resources.

Not that I disagree, but I think what Wulf was talking about was the race gating.

I got the impression that it was more "We'd like to do more, but can't, so we'll have to make it like this instead" as opposed to the gating existing with consideration towards both cost and characterization.

For instance, it's cheaper to make a character only gay.  But I think we've also leveraged knowing that into something pretty awesome and interesting within that characterization.

What was confirmed was that there would be 8 LIs with 2 being race gated and in another reply they said there'd be a romance with "at least one" NPC that was neither an advisor or companion.

Can I see the actual quote?  I'm just curious what was said, thanks.
