That's why Aveline talked about arresting him and she'was annoyed he kept his mouth shut about all the crimes just to keep the Business flowing.

As for the racism issue, I'd say that any race gating with elves and humans could be problematic depending on how it's handled, considering the history those two races have. But we're not even sure if dwarves and qunari can interbreed with other races, which complicates matters somewhat, on a biological level.
Well, we know dwarves at least can have sex with humans and elves, and they've already said there won't be kids. The biological compatability argument doesn't really matter in that aspect. As for qunari, I seriously doubt that what they're packin' is that far off from the human standard, but if a dev confirms otherwise I won't stop 'em.

Fair enough. Characters will often act in ways that people don't agree with. Characters are individuals, they won't always represent the archtype you expect of them and there is nothing wrong with that. Like Sera is just Sera, she's not a poster child for lesbianism and I expect some people won't like how that plays out.

I was actually thinking of pheromones and attraction. If Dwarves and Qunari are essentially different species then the differences in pheromones might just be enough to set certain dwarves/qunari off from romancing someone outside their "race". Pheromones can actually have a huge impact on sexual attraction, and some members of the species might just be genetically inclined to just not be attracted to anyone they can't make babies with, even if they have no intention of ever having children.
It'd also not be something that translates well as an allegory for real life interracial relationships because for pretty much all, if not all of human history our interracial problems were always between groups that could reproduce with each other (I say pretty much all because there was that hazy time when there were like 3 separate species of humans living within the same region as each other).

I wonder sometimes if the players here who mention so much about racism would all romance characters totally independant of their race. Would the outcry of Sera being lesbian be just as loud if she wasn't an elf, but a dwarf?
Given the many comments of "again, Bioware doesn't allow me to have a m/f elf-elf relationship", I don't think that's the case.
I suspect NPCs are just held to a different moral standard than PCs when it comes to chosing who they want to share their bed with.
After Anders, I've pretty much had my fill of spirits and the possessed. I barely liked Wynne, for that matter.

EDIT: Just because an NPC/companion is friendly and/or hot doesn't mean they don't have offensive prejudices. Same goes for people who are getting a bit upset with Darrah mentioning that some NPCs may take note of your gender and make gender-specific comments. Just because it's a fantasy world doesn't mean everyone who isn't a demon is perfect. There is nothing wrong with taking specific notice of something... as long as it isn't done in a cruel or violent way. Then it should be portrayed in a negative light, imho.
It's probably on the wiki, but yes, dwarves can have kids with humans and elves. After a developer mentioned it, people went wild speculating that Sandal must be a half-dwarf.
